Wise Church: Learning From The World-Wide Church, Alison Adam, Emily R. Brink, Marie Eugenia Cornou, Paul Detterman, Jerry Pillay, Anne Zaki

Symposium on Worship Archive

Whether in Toledo, Toronto, Taipei, Tehran, or Tegucigalpa, worship of the Triune God has many commonalities, and followers of Jesus have much to learn from one another. This seminar will focus on the wisdom gathered in “Worshiping the Triune God,” a collection of proverbs developed through global consultation and explored in the study guide Wise Church (Faith Alive, 2013). Leaders from around the globe will speak to this wisdom as it is applied in their unique contexts in order to celebrate, challenge, and inspire each participant with ways our worship can more deeply connect us to the heart of God …

German Jewish Female Scientists: Untold Stories, Justin Peacock, Dr. Robert B. Mcfarland Jan 2014

German Jewish Female Scientists: Untold Stories, Justin Peacock, Dr. Robert B. Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When one hears about the Jewish scholars who fled the German Third Reich during the Nazi’s reign of terror, one often hears of Einstein, Freud and others; however, a little known fact is that many scholars in pre-Nazi Germany were Jewish women. These Jewish women were at the forefront of their gender, struggling to be among the first women to gain a secondary education and doctorates to teach at the universities. Many of these scholars’ stories have gone untold through the years because of their gender and because of their race, which the Nazis sought to destroy. Many of their …

“Libelous Films”: Mormon And Gentile Efforts To Suppress Anti- Mormon Films, 1911-1912 Summary, Jacob W. Olmstead, Dr. Brian Q. Cannon Jan 2014

“Libelous Films”: Mormon And Gentile Efforts To Suppress Anti- Mormon Films, 1911-1912 Summary, Jacob W. Olmstead, Dr. Brian Q. Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Late in 1911 the motion picture trade journal Moving Picture World announced that the film A Victim of the Mormons was slated for release in the United States during the first week in February 1912. Of Danish origin, this film rehearsed the fictitious travails of a Mormon missionary who duped an unsuspecting young woman into conversion to become one of his plural wives. This plot was typical of many anti-Mormon plays, lectures, and news articles generated in Europe at the time; however, the producer of A Victim of the Mormons were the first to explore the subject in their films.

Huff Family History Research, Emily Wilbur, Dr. Kathryn M. Daynes

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the genealogical field, researchers often use the work of others to compliment and advance their own research. Published family histories are an important and major source for gathering compiled data. Apostle And Scientist John A. Widtsoe’S Views Of Evolution: Development, Influences, And Expression, Amy Elisabeth Johnson, Dr. Alan Parrish

Journal of Undergraduate Research

John A. Widtsoe, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who later became an apostle, was also one of the most renowned and respected scientists of his day. During the turn of the century and the early twentieth century, his work in scientific fields and his contributions to the church were amazing. This research project studied his opinion of evolution and how he developed that opinion by studying both his published and unpublished works and investigating the classes, teachings, professors, and other influences on his thought.

A Journey To The Land Of Jorge Luis Borges, Susan Stewart, Dr. Thomas Lyon Jan 2014

A Journey To The Land Of Jorge Luis Borges, Susan Stewart, Dr. Thomas Lyon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My relationship with Jorge Luis Borges and his prose and poetry began on a river trip I took two months after I had purchased his work of fictions Labyrinths. I had many hours floating down the river to read, digest and love his thrilling, enigmatic prose. His words were playful and tricky. His mysterious and mathematically written works mocked the stable and expected.

Five Points For Teachers To Help Dominican Transfer Students, Daniel E. Ralphs, Dr. Thomas Lyon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Alfredo had been in the United States for only three weeks when he began in the local public school in Provo, Utah. Native to central Mexico, Alfredo spoke no English. Assigned to work with Alfredo as a volunteer, I began by asking his teacher how I could help or where I should begin with his schooling. She responded desperately, “I have no idea!” Even though my Spanish minimized the language barrier, the teacher was still frustrated as to where she could begin with her new student. We realized that, to help Alfredo adjust, we not only had to overcome the …

Trieste In Literary And Cultural Imagination: A Select Bibliography, Robert Ricks, Cinzia Noble Jan 2014

Trieste In Literary And Cultural Imagination: A Select Bibliography, Robert Ricks, Cinzia Noble

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Trieste is a charming port city on the Adriatic Sea in the northeast corner of Italy, home to nearly 300,000 and capital of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region. Though Trieste has ancient roots as the Roman settlement Tergeste, it was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when it became the most important port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, that Trieste grew and flourished. Its advantageous location at the crossroads between Latin, Slavic, and German civilizations certainly favored its rise to greater regional importance and bred a peculiar cosmopolitan atmosphere that survives to this day.
