Saturnine Melancholy In The Art Of Francisco De Goya, Alex Carraway Mar 2013

Saturnine Melancholy In The Art Of Francisco De Goya, Alex Carraway

Theses and Dissertations

Within the art of the Spanish Romantic artist Francisco José de Goya (1746 - 1828), there exist specific iconographic motifs that exemplify the personality of a melancholic and Saturnine type. Goya depicts the contemplative melancholic motif in such works as Capricho 43 and the Portrait of Jovellanos, and shows the traditional attributes of Saturn in the drawings of A Melancholy Woman and Allegory on Philosophy. My contribution to the study of Goya is important because in addition to the traditional melancholic motif and the attributes associated with Saturn depicted in his art, my thesis serves to see Goya as an …

Katlehong Cabaret, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise

Originally formed through an outreach program for youth during the Apartheid era, Via Katlehong’s high-energy style is an energetic brew of “Pantsula” (street dance) and “Gumboot” (rhythmic physical percussion). Through constantly searching for new performance horizons, they have become a major player on the international stage. Teaching Algebra Through Functional Programming:An Analysis Of The Bootstrap Curriculum, Robert Lee Mar 2013

Teaching Algebra Through Functional Programming:An Analysis Of The Bootstrap Curriculum, Robert Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Bootstrap is a computer-programming curriculum that teaches students to program video games using Racket, a functional programming language based on algebraic syntax. This study investigated the relationship between learning to program video games from a Bootstrap course and the resulting effect on students' understanding of algebra. Courses in three different schools, lasting about six weeks each, were studied. Control and treatment groups were given a pre and post algebra assessment. A qualitative component consisting of observations and interviews was also used to further triangulate findings. Statistical analysis revealed that students who completed the Bootstrap course gained a significantly better understanding …

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith Mar 2013

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Conflict minerals are becoming a significant concern in the international community (as seen in the passage of legislature regulating and addressing them such as America’s Dodd Frank Act). Through the efforts of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots organizations (among others), Africa’s conflict minerals are receiving an ever increasing amount of attention. Though conflict minerals are mined in a variety of nations around the world, one nation that is endowed with all four minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) discussed in this paper is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Along with being a nation highly endowed with …

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman Mar 2013

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Recently, northern Nigeria is attracting global media attention, albeit negatively, on issues which border on leadership failure, ethno-religious conflicts, youth unemployment and official corruption. The attendant poverty in the region has created a climate of frustration and disillusionment on the part of the citizens, which, together with similar problems in other parts of Nigeria, are transmuting into threats to corporate existence. The hydra-headed phenomenon of Boko Haram, for instance, is for all intents and purposes a product of multifaceted social problems. To worsen the case, there appears to be complete failure of imagination going by the way in which both …

Drugs, Devices, And Desires: A Problem-Based Learning Course In The History Of Medicine, Sarah Levitt, Anne Mckeage, P. K. Rangachari

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is well suited for courses in the history of medicine, where multiple perspectives exist and information has to be gleaned from different sources. A student, an archivist, and a teacher offer three perspectives about a senior level course where students explored the antecedents and consequences of medical technology. Two active learning strategies were used: (a) PBL to explore the historical basis of procedures used to diagnose, prevent and treat a single disease, tuberculosis, and (b) a concurrent inquiry-based component that permitted individual exploration of other medical technologies and demonstration of learning through diverse options (book reviews, conversations, …

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Windows And Mirrors: Selecting Multiethnic Young Adult Fiction To Increase Adolescent Engagement With Academic And Cultural Literacy, Caryn Joan Lefaga Lesuma

Theses and Dissertations

Current scholarship in literacy education underscores the inefficacy of standardized education in public schools, particularly for minority students. At the same time, a longstanding lack of understanding between the various culture groups that live in the United States often results in minority groups that are either stereotyped, misunderstood, or viewed as Other. Both of these issues can be traced to the literature that students read in school, which focuses on "classic" literature—often synonymous with "white" literature—that excludes minority narratives. While minorities struggle more with "academic literacy" (the ability to read and write in an active, reflective manner), there is also …

Behold An Angel Of The Lord Came And Stood Before Me:A Cultural Examination Of Joseph Smith's 1823 Visions Of Moroni, Adam Price Hock Mar 2013

Behold An Angel Of The Lord Came And Stood Before Me:A Cultural Examination Of Joseph Smith's 1823 Visions Of Moroni, Adam Price Hock

Theses and Dissertations

Literary historian Terryl L. Givens referenced the visions of Moroni as "exhibit A" of Mormonism for nineteenth century believers. The 1823 visions constituted one of the core tenets of the religion as an underlying premise of The Book of Mormon. The significance of the visions, however, has not translated into many studies on the 1823 visions. This thesis seeks to fill portions of this gap by evaluating the visions within post-Revolutionary evangelical and treasure seeking culture. I contend that the visions drew upon various elements of the culture, but ultimately diverged from the culture. The introduction recounts the vision from …
