Event Horizon, Samuel Joshua Mar 2013

Event Horizon, Samuel Joshua

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Event Horizon depicts a spectacular and somewhat violent cosmic light display. This piece uses compositional techniques championed by composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Paul Hindemith. These techniques include use of linear tonality, limited pitch collections, split thirds and non-functional triads, contrasting sections of tension and repose, chromatic consonance, and directional lines that move toward prepared pitches. Such techniques make it possible to maintain a relatively tonal language while not relying heavily on traditional harmonic progression. Event Horizon is written for full orchestra, including one piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, …

Heroes, Saints, And Gods: Foundation Legends And Propaganda In Ancient And Renaissance Rome, Danielle L. Marsh Mar 2013

Heroes, Saints, And Gods: Foundation Legends And Propaganda In Ancient And Renaissance Rome, Danielle L. Marsh

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The paper investigates the way in which Roman leaders, during the classical and Renaissance periods, used foundation myths as a form of persona l propaganda. It shows that men like Julius Caesar used the supposed founders of the city to promote their own claims to power through art and architecture. It not only explains how men like Augustus would build upon this by including not only the city’s founders, but also Caesar to legitimize their own claims though art, architecture, and literature. And final ly, it provides a look into how the princes of the Renaissance—especially the papal princes—took ancient, …

Baumrind's Authoritative Parenting Style: A Model For Creating Autonomous Writers, Rachel Page Payne Mar 2013

Baumrind's Authoritative Parenting Style: A Model For Creating Autonomous Writers, Rachel Page Payne

Theses and Dissertations

Though Quintilian introduced the term in loco parentis in his Institutio Oratoria by suggesting that teachers think of themselves as parents of a student's mind, composition scholars have let parenting as a metaphor for teaching fall by the wayside in recent discussions of classroom authority. Podis and Podis have recently revived the term, though, and investigated the ways writing teachers enact Lakoff's "Strict Father" and "Nurturing Mother" authority models. Unfortunately, their treatment of these two opposite authority styles reduces classroom authority styles to a mutually exclusive binary of two less than satisfactory options. I propose clinical and developmental psychologist Diana …

The Ottoman Empire In The First World War: A Rational Disaster, Matthew David Penix Mar 2013

The Ottoman Empire In The First World War: A Rational Disaster, Matthew David Penix

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Ottoman Empire's entry into the First World War in October 1914 represents a break in over a century of diplomacy in the Middle East. Previous study of late Ottoman politics has focused more upon the European states with imperial interests in the Middle East and has not adequately explained why the weak Ottoman state decided to enter the war. This study utilizes both British and German diplomatic documents, along with published secondary works, to reframe the Ottoman entry into the war in a way that highlights Ottoman agency and illuminates the internal and external constraints faced by Ottoman statesmen. …

The Role Of Intonation In L2 Russian Speakers' Intelligibility, Comprehensibility And Accentedness, Emma J. Top Mar 2013

The Role Of Intonation In L2 Russian Speakers' Intelligibility, Comprehensibility And Accentedness, Emma J. Top

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the ability of 4th year students of Russian as a second language to use intonation to form intelligible questions. 25 speakers were recorded asking a question in which they were supposed to stress one word in the question using intonation, as is standard in Russian. They then received an intelligibility score based on whether the native Russian raters correctly understood that they were asking a question and what they were asking a question about. Additionally, native speakers rated the speech samples on accentedness, meaning how much the speech deviated from native norms and comprehensibility, meaning how …

Towards A Consummated Life: Kenneth Burke's Concept Of Consummation As Critical Conversation And Catharsis, Cherise Marie Bacalski Mar 2013

Towards A Consummated Life: Kenneth Burke's Concept Of Consummation As Critical Conversation And Catharsis, Cherise Marie Bacalski

Theses and Dissertations

Consummation was the one term about which Kenneth Burke wasn't particularly long-winded - odd considering his claim that it was the apex of his theory of form. Perhaps Burke never explained exactly what consummation was because he himself was never clear on the subject, as he told John Woodcock in an interview toward the end of his career. Burke began conceptualizing his theory of form early on - in his 20s - and published it in his first critical book, Counter-Statement, in 1931. At that time, Burke's theory of form had already taken one evolutionary step - from self-expression, with …

Integrating Emotional Attachment And Sustainability In Electronic Product Design, Alex Lobos, Callie W. Babbitt Mar 2013

Integrating Emotional Attachment And Sustainability In Electronic Product Design, Alex Lobos, Callie W. Babbitt

Articles

Current models for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products encourage frequent product replacement with newer versions that offer only minor incremental improvements. This pattern, named planned obsolescence, diminishes user experience and shortens product lifespan. This paper presents the conceptual basis for a two-part integrated approach to combating planned obsolescence in ICT devices. First, design for emotional attachment, which creates products that users enjoy, value, and use for longer. Second, technological adaptability, which anticipates product upgrades and repairs as new technologies emerge. A model interdisciplinary design course in industrial design and sustainability, also described herein, trains students to apply this approach …
