Reconciliation Or Reconstruction? Further Thoughts On Political Forgiveness, Jean Axelrad Cahan Mar 2013

Reconciliation Or Reconstruction? Further Thoughts On Political Forgiveness, Jean Axelrad Cahan

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Over the past decade a substantial literature has emerged on the concept of political forgiveness and the process of restorative justice. This article argues that importing an idea of forgiveness into political affairs is a mistake. It is not necessary for the promotion of peace and security, and it is has been construed in a way that leans heavily toward Christian conceptions of forgiveness, as is evident in the influence of Desmond Tutu. The article also examines the influence of Hegelian recognition theory in current discussions of the political benefits of forgiveness, and reviews the case of postwar German-Jewish relations, …

My Night As A Sex Tourist, Chelsea E. Broe

SURGE

I’ve been studying in Copenhagen, Denmark for a few months now, and since I had a week off to travel (perks of studying abroad), I took the opportunity to spend a few nights in Amsterdam. I was traveling alone, so during my first night at the hostel in Amsterdam, when I met a woman my age who offered to show me around the city, I accepted, excited to find a traveling partner. Leaving The Dark To Find The Light: A Study Of L1 English Acquisition Of L2 Spanish /L/, Ariel Rebekah Bean

Theses and Dissertations

Second language acquisition (SLA) research is rich in possibilities for examining language-specific phonetics and phonology in the cross-linguistic context of acquisition. However, much of the existing English-Spanish research focuses on the acquisition of voice onset time (VOT) of /p, t, k, b, d, ɡ/ or rhotics, or on acquisition in relation to factors such as task type, time abroad, and motivational intensity (e.g. Alvord & Christiansen, 2012; Díaz-Campos, 2004, 2006; Face, 2006; Martinsen, 2010; Martinsen & Alvord, 2012; Shively, 2008; Shively & Cohen, 2008; Tanner, 2012 a, 2012b; Zampini, 1994). Like these studies, the present study incorporates linguistic and extralinguistic …

The End Of All Learning, Maddison Carole Colvin Mar 2013

The End Of All Learning, Maddison Carole Colvin

Theses and Dissertations

Science and religion are systems that work to organize experience into a manageable understanding of the world. Both of these systems gather information - one through mental/spiritual experience and the other through empirical/physical evidence - and then reorder it within a structured framework. They both work under the premise that truth is both existent and attainable within the context of their system. This separation is viewed as necessary in the knowledge/experience-gathering process, but when that knowledge is accumulated, neither science nor religion has the ability to access or communicate truth in its entirety. Plainly speaking, truth is vast and knowledge …

Playdate With Little Rock, Emily Ann Ryan Mar 2013

Playdate With Little Rock, Emily Ann Ryan

Theses and Dissertations

Moms will find it invaluable to have a guide book for playdate locations that goes beyond a mere description of a place and delves right into such issues as: Should I bring a snack for my child? Where should I park? When should I get there to avoid crowds? Can I bring a stroller? These are the issues that mothers with young children really care about when it comes to trying out new locations for playdates. The purpose of Playdate with Little Rock is to give moms with young children a resource that they can count on. It is a …

Arkansas And The Death Penalty: Responses To Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's Commutations Of Fifteen Death Sentences In 1970, Andrea Lynn Ringer Mar 2013

Arkansas And The Death Penalty: Responses To Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's Commutations Of Fifteen Death Sentences In 1970, Andrea Lynn Ringer

Theses and Dissertations

As his final act as governor, Winthrop Rockefeller commuted the sentences of all death row inmates in Arkansas in 1970. This action spurred hundreds of letters from around the world. More than three hundred letters, which represented the vast majority of responses, were positive and congratulatory. However, Rockefeller received nearly one hundred uncomplimentary letters as a result of this action. The letters offered insight to various movements and events as many people connected the commutations to developments throughout the world. The letters fell into the following categories: political responses, religious responses, racial responses, social responses, victim-based responses, and responses to …

Teaching Rhetorical Strategies And Workplace Discourse Conventions In First-Year Composition, Natalie Rego Mar 2013

Teaching Rhetorical Strategies And Workplace Discourse Conventions In First-Year Composition, Natalie Rego

Theses and Dissertations

In general, Composition I and II are required across the board for every student regardless of academic major. For some students, First-Year Composition (FYC) is the only writing instruction they will receive before making the transition into the workplace. Subsequently, FYC is the opportune time to teach rhetorical strategies and to expose students to the workplace discourses that will be relevant to their professional lives. This thesis proposes a curriculum for a composition II course that has two aims: to teach students rhetorical strategies and to expose students to multiple genres and discourse communities. This thesis shows that it is …

"Game Recognize Game": How Hip-Hop Rhetoric Affects Perceptions Of Composition In College Freshmen, Ages 18-24, Veronica Nanette Williams

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to help justify hip-hop as a valid example of rhetoric, this project is an informal investigation of how the hip-hop rhetoric affects perceptions of composition in college freshmen ages 18-24 using a small survey sample of first-year composition students. The resulting data indicates that hip-hop rhetoric does affect the perceptions of composition in hip-hop oriented students, specifically, hip-hop rhetoric's emphasis on ethos, or authenticity, seems to influence those students' assessments of their college compositions in terms of classical rhetorical aims.

Five Miles: From Dutch Creek And Back Again, Lacey Thacker Mar 2013

Five Miles: From Dutch Creek And Back Again, Lacey Thacker

Theses and Dissertations

In the late winter of 2012, I set out to collect a series of stories from my grandparents, primarily my grandfather. Using a recorder, I collected these stories. I then transcribed them and clarified the text, while adding contextual information. Through these, I've captured the "voice" of Dutch Creek language, as well as the life experiences of a particular individual. In the afterword, I prepared a rhetorical analysis of the situation in the kitchen where the stories were recorded, based on an article by Lloyd F. Bitzer, a theoretician widely acknowledged for his work.

Standing Nude: The Academic Influence In Figural Works By Henri-Edmond Cross, Callie Jackson Mar 2013

Standing Nude: The Academic Influence In Figural Works By Henri-Edmond Cross, Callie Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The available scholarship on Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) focuses on his later Divisionist landscape paintings, giving little attention to his academic years and figural works. This study reviews the artist's formative years by looking at an academic figure study held in the Arkansas Arts Center collection entitled Standing Nude. To attribute a date to the sketch, it will be considered three ways: the figure, the cross-hatching technique and role of the model in the oeuvre of Cross. The suggested date will illustrate that Cross was not only working within the non-traditional movement of Neo-Impressionism, but that he also possessed academic training.

Student Attitudes Toward Social Media Technology As An Enhancement To Language Acquisition, Meghan Marie Sorensen Mar 2013

Student Attitudes Toward Social Media Technology As An Enhancement To Language Acquisition, Meghan Marie Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

Language students today have grown up with a plethora of technology tools at their fingertips, which has in some cases earned them the title of "digital native". 'Students' high use of technology outside the classroom has led teachers and researchers to believe that technology could be highly effective for language learners when used appropriately. Yet little is known about how students actually react to technology-based tools for language learning purposes. This study seeks to not only understand student attitudes toward technology in general, but also to see how those attitudes might affect student attitudes toward online language learning tools in …

Developed & Less Finished: Maintaining Life, Lauren Kaye Sukany Mar 2013

Developed & Less Finished: Maintaining Life, Lauren Kaye Sukany

Theses and Dissertations

This painting series, memory-inspired using developed compositions and less finished paint application, depicts mysterious scenes of figures in interiors maintaining life. Themes of maintenance, celebration, conversation, and leisure are emphasized using formal elements of figures in interiors, perspective, and paint application. These compositions are memories based on a collection of moments in time. Though inspired from memories, the pieces are not intended to portray real life but a shared physical and mental space of the figures creating a magical and mysterious element within the composition. While revisiting American paintings of the 1930s and 1940s, the larger implications of my work …
