The Small Overlooked Hindu Street Temples Of Madurai, Elina Berzins May 2013

The Small Overlooked Hindu Street Temples Of Madurai, Elina Berzins

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

When I first walked around downtown Madurai, down its narrow and dusty streets that led into more lanes and alleys, I noticed a trend of small street temples that were usually built outside stores and apartment houses. When I asked an older man who sat next to a one of these temples that was modest in size and consisted of a Ganesha, Hindu elephant god statue, he told me that as a Western woman, I shouldn’t waste my time studying these small insignificant temples. He insisted that I focus on the grand and large Meenakshi Temple, which Madurai is famous …

Uncommon Action: An Interdisciplinary Arts Performance On Ally Involvement, Rachel Dentinger May 2013

Uncommon Action: An Interdisciplinary Arts Performance On Ally Involvement, Rachel Dentinger

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This instrumental and dance performance, titled “Uncommon Action: An Interdisciplinary Arts Performance on Ally Involvement”, was designed to raise awareness about bullying and becoming an active ally in the event of bullying. Sixteen student musicians and a team of production assistants were enlisted to produce this interdisciplinary program that was over a year and a half in the making. This production is a unique artistic effort where the classical musicians will also perform as dancers while playing, similar to what is seen in performances by marching bands, drum corps, Stomp, Barrage, Blue Man Group, etc.

The musical piece, commissioned from …

The Plight Of A Vertical Photograph In A Digital World: An Ipad News App Solution, Thomas Alexander Halsey Palmer May 2013

The Plight Of A Vertical Photograph In A Digital World: An Ipad News App Solution, Thomas Alexander Halsey Palmer

Photography - Theses

As a concept designer for Hearst Corporation's first iPad news app, the author developed solutions for displaying vertical photographs in the tablet format -- just as they have been authoritatively published in traditional news print designs. This thesis also reveals that the lack of vertical integration in newspaper home page design has been widely unaddressed, according to media experts. This formative period of tablet design has provided the author an opportunity to advocate for the vertical photograph's vital role in photojournalism.

The Light Princess: An Illustrated Fairy Tale, Amanda Shaffer May 2013

The Light Princess: An Illustrated Fairy Tale, Amanda Shaffer

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Fairy tales teach children important life lessons, and The Light Princess by George MacDonald is no exception. The main lesson taught by this story is that one needs a balance between gravity and levity, or that there can be no true happiness without knowing sadness as well. This fairy tale is aimed at slightly older children, around age ten, so they might begin to understand this lesson. Younger children would not be able to understand this as well, but it may stick with the older kids. I feel that this is a particularly important life lesson, and my illustrations try …

French In Madagascar: A Colonial Language After Independence, Christopher Roehrer-Macgregor May 2013

French In Madagascar: A Colonial Language After Independence, Christopher Roehrer-Macgregor

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The French first landed off the south-eastern coast of Madagascar in December of 1648. A little over two and a half centuries later they would land troops, marking the beginning of sixty years of colonization. The groundwork for government and education set during these years continues to the present day, including the use of the French language. In this study I look at the role of the French language in modern-day Madagascar. Using interviews from two major urban centers, I argue that French has a dualistic role, both as an opportunity for self-advancement for a select few, while also as …

La Joya Isd Fine Arts: Teaching Mexican Identity Through Music And Dance, Katrena H. Henry May 2013

La Joya Isd Fine Arts: Teaching Mexican Identity Through Music And Dance, Katrena H. Henry

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The La Joya Independent School District has made a serious effort to cultivate and promote mariachi, conjunto, and folklórico programs at the middle school and high school level. Students give numerous performances throughout the year and these programs have exposed thousands of people to the music and traditions of Mexico and the border region. What draws so many students to these particular programs in La Joya ISD? What sense of "Mexican identity" do these programs create for its participants? Through observing various performances, interviewing educators, students, and community members, I explore why these programs are considered essential by the school …

Guys And Dolls: The Process Of Becoming Sky Masterson, Peter Colombatto May 2013

Guys And Dolls: The Process Of Becoming Sky Masterson, Peter Colombatto

Theses

In order to satisfy the requirements for a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from Lindenwood University, I was required to perform a leading role in a production. In addition to the rehearsal and performance process, I am required to submit a thesis paper to supplement my experience. My proposal to perform the role of Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls was accepted and the process began in the fall of 2012. Contrary to popular belief, Sky is a complex character that is more than just a typical leading male. Throughout the rehearsal process I was able to explore new …

Translingualism In Post-Secondary Writing And Language Instruction : Negotiating Language Ideologies In Policies And Pedagogical Practices., Nancy Bou Ayash May 2013

Translingualism In Post-Secondary Writing And Language Instruction : Negotiating Language Ideologies In Policies And Pedagogical Practices., Nancy Bou Ayash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Drawing on text-oriented data from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, this study examines how writing teachers and students constantly negotiate tensions between translingual sociolinguistic realities on one hand and monolingualist assumptions about language and language relations on another that dominate curricular and pedagogical designs in first year writing courses. The study involves a multiplicity of data sources, such as official institutional documents, individual instructional materials, classroom observations, structured interviews, and a method of "talk around texts." Writing teachers in this study sensitively grappled with tensions between the constant political pressures of generating the status quo and their ideological orientations …

No Greater Love: Recognition, Transformation, And Friendship In The Harry Potter Series, Stephen Parish May 2013

No Greater Love: Recognition, Transformation, And Friendship In The Harry Potter Series, Stephen Parish

Masters Theses

Nobody today doubts the momentous influence the Harry Potter series has had on a generation of readers. Many scholars and critics assume Harry's place amongst other great works of children's literature, and indeed the series has brought about a revival in children's literature scholarship. Despite this popularity, many critics question the series' aesthetics, its attention to moral demeanor. Therefore, what element exists in Harry Potter that could enforce its aesthetic quality? Based on a rhetorical reading of the texts, my thesis upholds the aesthetic nature of the books through an analysis of the trio's friendship and and its impact on …

Life Inside The Spectacle: David Foster Wallace, George Saunders, And Storytelling In The Age Of Entertainment, John Hawkins May 2013

Life Inside The Spectacle: David Foster Wallace, George Saunders, And Storytelling In The Age Of Entertainment, John Hawkins

Masters Theses

This project explores George Saunders's In Persuasion Nation and David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest as interventionary literature. The thesis asserts that the two works confront the problems of isolation and dehumanization created by entertainment-based consumerism; they do so by depicting satirically exaggerated consumer societies and placing well-developed, sympathetic characters in those settings. The thesis includes a consideration of Jameson and deBord's theories of spectacle and Wallace's stated concerns with postmodern irony as an ineffective form of critique.

Putting Down Roots: A Tolkienian Conception Of Place, Kayla Snow May 2013

Putting Down Roots: A Tolkienian Conception Of Place, Kayla Snow

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the way in which J.R.R. Tolkien's develops and expresses his nuanced sense of place through his major literary works--namely, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien's sense of place, as expressed through his fiction, encompasses both metaphysical and geographical relational structures that are operative at both the local and global levels. As Tolkien develops his sense of place in his fiction, he draws from the Distributist principles--largely informed by Catholic social policy of the late nineteenth century and popularized by G.K. Chesterton--to build the economy in Middle-earth. The resulting economy resists industrialization …

Spice Sisters: Religion, Freedom And Escape Of Women In African American And Indian Literatures, Lovely Koshy May 2013

Spice Sisters: Religion, Freedom And Escape Of Women In African American And Indian Literatures, Lovely Koshy

Masters Theses

This thesis focuses on women in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun and Rabindranath Tagore's three short stories. Hansberry writes during a period in America when racism, segregation, and black migration to the North weighed heavy upon the psyche of black women. Tagore writes during a time when British control, sati system, caste system, and dharma leave Indian women voiceless. Both express their disagreement with entrenched norms and institutions that have been in place for hundreds of years, a task that initially may seem to be an impossible undertaking, and unlikely to bring about expected change. This work reveals …

The Fine-Tuning Of Nomic Behavior In Multiverse Scenarios, Max Lewis Edward Andrews May 2013

The Fine-Tuning Of Nomic Behavior In Multiverse Scenarios, Max Lewis Edward Andrews

Masters Theses

The multiverse hypothesis (the view that there is not just one world or universe in existence, bur rather that there are many) is the leading alternative to the competing fine-tuning hypothesis (the laws of physics and constants are fine-tuned for the existence of life). The multiverse dispels many aspects of the fine-tuning argument by suggesting that there are different initial conditions in each universe, varying constants of physics, and the laws of nature lose their known arbitrary values; thus, making the previous single-universe argument from fine- tuning incredibly weak. The position that will be advocated will be that a form …

Chevalier Jackson, M.D. (1865-1958): Il Ne Se Repose Jamais., Phi D Nguyen, B.A., Scott W. Cowan, Md, Charles J. Yeo, Md, Nathaniel R. Evans Iii, M.D.

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles

In the final year of the American Civil War, 1865, Chevalier Jackson was born on the 4th of November just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The eldest of three sons of a poor, livestock-raising family, Jackson was raised in a period of social and political unrest. He was perhaps an even more unrestful boy. The description of his childhood days from his father’s father—Il ne se repose jamais, ‘‘He never rests’’—would ultimately reflect the man, doctor, and evangelist Jackson would later become.1 Indeed, he never did rest, Jackson would tirelessly pave the way for modern bronchoscopy and endoscopy as a whole; bringing …

What Of The Cosmopolitan? Or Approaching The Absent Patriarch In Transnational Theory, Sophia Basaldua May 2013

What Of The Cosmopolitan? Or Approaching The Absent Patriarch In Transnational Theory, Sophia Basaldua

All Theses

In this essay I will argue that there are embodied, privileged cosmopolitans, that merely masquerade as ghosts in order to avoid border detainment and a critical inquiry into their status. I will, further, argue that it is in the best interests of these cosmopolitans to avoid detection. Transnational discourse allows these cosmopolitans to exercise this privilege by dwelling on the ideal versions of cosmopolitanism. The discourse further obscures the embodied cosmopolitan by focusing upon already excessively embodied exorbitant citizens, which has the double effect of increasing the embodiment of exorbitant citizens while obscuring the privileged cosmopolitan. In order to conduct …

The Second Choice, Yangchun Li May 2013

The Second Choice, Yangchun Li

All Theses

This creative thesis strives to carve out the constitutional disappointments in our psychic experiences and the equally constitutional human effort to seek a temporal sense of contentment amid the disappointments, from the context of the increasing fluidity of the present world, where international mobility has ceased to be the privilege or misfortune of a few and become the norm of a growing globalized population. In this thesis, an inward-looking, self-exploring approach is employed to explore the pluralism in both disappointment and self-consoling. The limitations in the characters' perspectives are essential to both stories in this thesis, because a limited perspective …

Class Status And Identity In The Trinidadian House: A Semantic Reading Of The Typical Trinidadian House, Across Class Levels, With Emphasis On Faã§Ade Design, Leniqueca Welcome

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi stated, "Remember that no other memory remains of us than the walls which after hundreds of thousands of years bear witness to him who was their author." Brunelleschi's statement alludes to architecture's ability to encapsulate the spirit of its time and people, allowing it to transcend time, and be translated to future generations. Fascinated by this ability of architecture, this thesis investigates the relationship between the evolution of a particular architectural typology and the changing socio-political climate of its context. To illustrate this theme it presents a social history of the evolution of the single-family house …

A Study Of The Influence Of Women Clients On Residential Architectural Design Through The Work Of E. Fay Jones, Calli Verkamp May 2013

A Study Of The Influence Of Women Clients On Residential Architectural Design Through The Work Of E. Fay Jones, Calli Verkamp

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis aims to determine the influence of women clients on residential architectural design in the United States throughout the twentieth century. In the late nineteenth and twentieth century, waves of feminism and women’s rights movements pushed traditional views of men, women, family and relationships in America to change. At the same time, modernity brought about a shift in architectural thinking. Therefore, if architectural ideas about housing and the home and cultural ideas regarding gender roles and domesticity are directly related, these cultural changes would be present in housing designs of the period. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was known to …

Calvin:"If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live a lot differently."
Hobbes:"How so?"
Calvin:"Well, when you look into infinity, you realize that there are more important things than what people do all day."

Chronicles Of Revolution And Nation: El Taller De Gráfica Populars 'Estampas De La Revolución Mexicana' (1947), Mary Theresa Avila

Art & Art History ETDs

This dissertation concentrates on the key 1947 portfolio Las Estampas de la Revolución Mexicana' ('Prints of the Mexican Revolution') produced by El Taller de Gráfica Popular (The Popular Graphics Workshop) or TGP, a graphic art collective founded in Mexico City in 1937. The album's eighty-five prints recount Mexican history from the l870s to the 1940s, as well as address the human condition and denounce social and civil injustices. These images are anchored in the diverse narratives and legacies of the Mexican Revolution (1910 and 1920). My analysis of the visual, textual, and historical components in the TGP's 1947 portfolio, a …

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

ABSTRACT OF PROJECT

Pairing Affective Skills with Art Making

This purpose of this project is to explore the parallel of creative thinking and the development of art making with the use of affective skills of creative problem solving. Affective skills all provide an emotional or behavioral skill that influence creative thinking in the art making process. Emotions set the foundation to creative ideas and concepts. Art is an experimental process that allows me the chance to visually interpret those emotions and to provide inner peace and comfort within. The finished product is a book that gives a detailed overview of …
