"The Sister Was Not A Mister": Gender And Sexuality In The Writings Of Gertrude Stein And Virginia Woolf, Jillian P. Fischer May 2013

"The Sister Was Not A Mister": Gender And Sexuality In The Writings Of Gertrude Stein And Virginia Woolf, Jillian P. Fischer

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This thesis explores the topics of gender and sexuality within Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons and Virginia Woolf’s Orlando by analyzing the texts through the lens of early twentieth-century sexologists and twentieth and twenty first century gender theorists. Both works reveal a common critique of the heteronormativity present within early twentieth-century understandings of sexuality and propose alternative spheres of sexuality and gender identity. Stein creates an alternative sphere in which desire is expanded. Beginning with an exploration of consumerist desire, Stein ultimately reveals a utopian vision of lesbian sexuality and the foregrounding of female desire, sexuality, and pleasure. Woolf’s alternative consists …

[No Titles In Utopia], Esteban J. Rodriguez May 2013

[No Titles In Utopia], Esteban J. Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The intended purpose of this thesis it to compose a collection of poetry consisting of four sections with each section containing between four to ten poems. The poems themselves will range between one to three pages and will be divided according to their particular subject matter, such as, but not limited, to childhood reflection, father-son relationships, the estrangement from suburbia and modernized America, and ekphrasis-inspired pieces that weave both art and narrative elements together. My main goal with this collection is to write poems in a clear straightforward manner without obscuring language, and constructing persona narratives that invite the reader …

Angel In Skirts, Mary Ruth Chen May 2013

Angel In Skirts, Mary Ruth Chen

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Angels In Skirts is a memoir composed of organic memories thematically linked through essays and chapters. I re-create the story of a young girl’s vivid and imaginative way of seeing life, the intensity of her emotions and what it feels like to desperately want to control men by handing over her body. Highlighted is a discussion of the struggle I had with labeling my work nonfiction. I also explore the effective use of parataxis in dialogue and the effect structure has on the narrative arc and characters in a work. I discuss my process when deciding on a form for …

Demeter's Daughters: How The Myth Of The Captured Bride Helped Spur Feminine Consciousness In Ancient Greece, Mary Elizabeth Naples May 2013

Demeter's Daughters: How The Myth Of The Captured Bride Helped Spur Feminine Consciousness In Ancient Greece, Mary Elizabeth Naples

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The ancient Greek cult festival known as the Thesmophoria was an exclusively feminine ritual whose purpose was human and agricultural fertility. The festival honored Demeter, goddess of the harvest and her daughter Persephone. Although men held the festival in high esteem, they were expressly forbidden—sometimes to the point of death—from attending the three-day long event. Men’s respect for the Thesmophoria was demonstrated by both their financial support as well as the curtailing of certain civic events in the polis on the second day of the Thesmophoria. Considered one of the oldest and most widespread of all Greek religious festivals, the …

Fetus: An Exploration Of Human Nature Through The Issue Of Abortion, Grant Collis Dinsdale May 2013

Fetus: An Exploration Of Human Nature Through The Issue Of Abortion, Grant Collis Dinsdale

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The issue of abortion touches deep emotions in individuals and continues to be a controversial topic in the United States. The Right to Life movement believes strongly that life begins at conception, and to abort an unborn fetus is an act of murder. The supporters of the Pro-Choice movement, however, believe that a woman has the right to choose what happens with her body, and this takes precedence over other considerations. This work of fiction uses the above controversy as its framework. The primary narrator is a fetus in utero who tells the story of how his father and mother …

"Queen Of All Islands": The Imagined Cartography Of Matthew Paris's Britain, John Wyatt Greenlee May 2013

"Queen Of All Islands": The Imagined Cartography Of Matthew Paris's Britain, John Wyatt Greenlee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the middle decade of the thirteenth century, the Benedictine monk and historian Matthew Paris drew four regional maps of Britain. The monk's works stand as the earliest extant maps of the island and mark a distinct shift from the cartographic traditions of medieval Europe. Historians have long considered the version attached to the monk's Abbreviatio Chronicorum – the Claudius map – as the last and most thorough of Paris's images of Britain. However, scholars have focused on the document's limitations as an accurate geographic representation and have failed to consider critically Paris's representation of Britain with an eye towards …
