Is There A Future Audience For Small Market Broadcast Television News?, David W. Madsen
Is There A Future Audience For Small Market Broadcast Television News?, David W. Madsen
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
Local television stations, especially in smaller markets of 100,000 to 200,000 TV homes, are constantly looking for adults between the ages of 25- 54 to watch their TV newscasts. TV stations must nurture younger audiences (of adults 18-34) to grow into older, desired audiences of loyal TV news viewers. Because of technological innovations such as the Internet, Facebook and Twitter, younger audiences are spending less time watching local TV news.
Existing research on younger audiences has largely focused on news consumption in general (TV, radio, newspaper, Internet), used more of a national news focus, and was often conducted in large …
Science’S Harmful Power, Rochelle Thomas
Science’S Harmful Power, Rochelle Thomas
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
The focus of this thesis is to address and acknowledge issues identifying how applied science’s progressive impact can harm people in any society. The advancement of scientific technology can cause detrimental results to the general public. A few examples are dropping of the atomic bomb; prescription medications dispensed to patients before adequate testing studies have been completed; and scientific fraud. The scientific community promotes the scientist based on their research without thoroughly testing the theory or discovery. The scientist will go to extreme lengths to achieve specific results can cause damaging effects on society. Scientists can falsely influence society and …
Reborn In Adversity - Memoir Excerpt And Review Of Resiliency Research: Risks And Traits, Alina Patterson
Reborn In Adversity - Memoir Excerpt And Review Of Resiliency Research: Risks And Traits, Alina Patterson
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Reborn in Adversity describes the journey one young girl makes as she seeks to self-actualize amidst multiple risk factors or packages. Raised in an abusive, hypocritical, and assaultive family, the author is faced with crisis after crises along each milestone of life. Once she leaves her abusive family, the risks and crises multiply in magnitude and number. In this journey she exhibits multiple resiliency traits that allow at risk children to rebound from adversity. She does more than rebound, as she is convinced that she has become a “better person” than she would have been had she not been tested …
Toile, Dilenia Garcia
Toile, Dilenia Garcia
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Toile is a painting series that explores constructions of taste and the semiotics of manufactured fabrics. Through the use of irony, paradox and deconstructions of rhythm, shape, color and form, the paintings are a response to the formal and historical content in the fabric. The idyllic landscape, notions of identity, sexism and liminality are some of the themes considered in the series. The paintings in this exhibition attempt to correct and mediate outdated models of representation through the exploration of painting as a process that is open and malleable.
Tethered, Samantha Jean Dixon
Tethered, Samantha Jean Dixon
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tethered addresses the innate fear of forgetting where an individual's family originates, both physically and historically. Not long after discovering that part of my family was almost completely annihilated during the Holocaust, I produced Tethered as visual documentation of the long-term effects of families of survivors. The exhibition is also influenced by my grandmother's experiences as a Mauthausen concentration camp survivor and my own experiences being raised by a survivor.
The knowledge of the imminent loss of memory initiates an instinct to repetitively record and remember personal history. Numerous memories have been forcefully buried in the darkest recesses of the …
Art Activism And Digital Technologies, Christina Sterbenz
Art Activism And Digital Technologies, Christina Sterbenz
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The following represents a critical, long-form journalism narrative, exploring the emerging relationship between art, activism, and digital technologies such as social media. These 3,000 words explore the concept using the lens of two large non-profit, social art organizations: The AIDS Quilt and the One Million Bones Project. The former, now an international endeavor, catalogues life in the age of AIDS through a community-driven patchwork quilt intended to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS and allow all those affected by the disease a creative coping strategy. The latter began as a small art installation in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a goal …
Cycle, Nichole Annette Howard
Cycle, Nichole Annette Howard
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cycle is the exhibition of a year-long project that experiments with growing food and medicinal herbs. Alongside an exploration of plant growth, I transfer iconic cultural objects of daily life from plastic to ceramics. Using material culture as a physical and conceptual platform, this re-contextualization of objects offers a radically different view of use and meaning. I transform the soda-filled, plastic Big Gulp cup into a terra planter filled with new life.
My working method involves making molds of Big Gulp plastic cups and transferring the form into a traditional plant growing material, terra cotta. I then germinate seeds inside …
Carrying Oxygen, Jaimie Gerst
Carrying Oxygen, Jaimie Gerst
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Carrying oxygen is a daily struggle for many who are constant oxygen users. From the moment of prescription to continuous portable oxygen therapy, ones life has changed. Every time an individual has to leave their home, they depend on having their form of portable oxygen therapy with them, in addition to other necessary items needed throughout the day.
Currently, many oxygen carriers do not fit the needs of their user. After talking to people using oxygen, doctors, distributers, and therapists, it became clear that there are several issues with current oxygen tanks and carriers. Oxygen cylinders are predominantly used because …

“Never underestimate the power of a few committed people to change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Meade
Colin Beavan’s No Impact Man details his yearlong experiment to live without creating any environmental impact. As sophomores we were inspired by Beavan’s journey but also skeptical of living a completely no-impact lifestyle as college-students. Although we were motivated to try to live sustainably, our efforts were dormant until our junior year. That year we decided that we would attempt to live up to the standards set forth by Beavan--understanding that some practices would be harder …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"We live in a fast paced world that is continuously changing; therefore, technology must also change with this way of living. Cell phones have become the universal means of communication not only for adults but also for children at the Elementary level. These devices have become an accessory and have become just as important as remembering to put a shirt on in the morning."

Many Worlds Converge Here: Vision And Identity In American Indian Photography, Alicia L. Harris
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Photographs of Native Americans taken by Frank A. Rinehart at the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in 1898 were then and continue to be part of the construction of indigenous identities, both by Anglo-Americans and Natives. This thesis analyzes the ramifications of Rinehart’s portraits and those of his peers as well as Native American artists in the 20th and 21st centuries who have sought to re-appropriate these images to make them empowering icons of individual or tribal identity rather than erasure of culture.
This thesis comprises two sections. In the first section, the analysis is focused on the historical …

Process Drama: A Medium For Creating A Hospitable Space For Learning Through Reverent Listening, Kim Anne Anthony
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
This thesis explores how Process Drama, as pedagogy, can invite into educational discourse a conversation about the roles of hospitality and reverence in the classroom through reverent listening to self, others and context. It can become a medium for holistic learning in the drama classroom and in learning situations of all kinds. Process Drama, as an enactment of reverent listening, creates a space for theater to facilitate the engagement of all participants, creating a learningful experience that can transcend barriers of race and social economic status brought by the invited and uninvited learner. Reverent listening and hospitality become the catalyst …
Classification Of Biological Phenomena To Aid In Search And Retrieval For Biomimicry, Kevin Murray
Classification Of Biological Phenomena To Aid In Search And Retrieval For Biomimicry, Kevin Murray
All Theses
Biomimetic design offers an avenue for designers to expand the solution realm by offering surface dissimilar analogies. However, a significant challenge within biomimetic design has been offering a suitable method for discovery and retrieval of inspiring biological phenomena to aid in conceptual design. This research proposes an approach for classifying both biological systems and engineering products into the type of problem being addressed. This allows designers to search for inspirational phenomena based on the type of problem that they are trying to solve. Initially this classification is performed with product-phenomenon pairings that have already been attributed to biomimetic design from …
The Identification Of Factors Contributing To First-Year College Students’ Mindset Of Singing Ability, And The Relationship Of That Mindset To Intent To Participate In Singing Activities, Susan Cogdill
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify what factors shape mindset of singing ability in first-year college music majors and non-music majors, and to examine the relationship of that mindset to intent to participate in singing activities. A researcher-designed survey was administered to first-year college music majors and non-music majors (N = 426). The survey questions explored possible relationships between mindset (beliefs in singing ability as a fixed trait or potential for growth) and (a) past musical experiences, (b) influence from others, (c) singing identity, and (d) intended participation (Dweck, 2000). As expected, music majors tended to endorse …
