Family Affairs Newsletter 2013-05-15, Zack Paakkonen May 2013

Family Affairs Newsletter 2013-05-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

A Plagued Mind: The Justification Of Violence Within The Principles Of Maximilien Robespierre, Kevin Lynch May 2013

A Plagued Mind: The Justification Of Violence Within The Principles Of Maximilien Robespierre, Kevin Lynch

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

A Plagued Mind: The Justification of Violence within the Principles of Maximilien Robespierre, takes a new look into the political career of the French Revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. This work explores the reasons as to why a man who valued principles so highly would seemingly turn against them by instituting the Reign of Terror. It follows the course of Robespierre's political career from beginning to end, and explains how each action taken by Robespierre was actually not an attempt to rise to power, but rather a sincere effort to create a republican France. As the French Revolution spiraled into chaos, …

The Magic Of Books: A History Of Medieval Magic And Literature, Ana Maria Lavado May 2013

The Magic Of Books: A History Of Medieval Magic And Literature, Ana Maria Lavado

Honors Theses

Narrative binds people together with a common language and experience. It provides a singular manner for communication and interaction. Without this interaction, there would be no society or culture to speak of; with no way to articulate and control sounds, humans would be forced to communicate through the use of motions and gestures, deprived of the beauty and magic of language. Words can somehow capture pain, joy, beauty, awe, sadness, excitement, emotion and the very thrill that comes from being alive in a way that nothing else can. Language can inspire and influence as much as it can inflict pain …

Sexual Assault And Sane (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) In Our Community, Emily Barrow May 2013

Sexual Assault And Sane (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) In Our Community, Emily Barrow

Honors Theses

Sexual assault and sexual violence is a problem in our society, with one in four college women report surviving rape (15 percent) or attempted rape (12 percent) since their fourteenth birthday, and about 42% of survivors did not tell anyone about their rape. Research on the subject is being done and information in a special report, Extent, Nature, and Consequences of Rape Victimization: Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS), conducted by American Prosecutors Research Institute and Boston College Connell School of Nursing, exposes some alarming statistics. The study reveals that over half of female victims and nearly …

Founding Clown Town: Applying Classical Methods To Devise New Works, Leslie Miller

Honors Theses

As a senior in high school, I only had one thing I knew I wanted to do with my life. Theatre was my passion and had been for many years. I had elected to attend art-focused schools since middle school and truly felt at home in artistic communities. At the time, I just needed an in-state school; I assumed that I would have to go to graduate school to really pursue my specific passion of physical theatre. Yet I am now in Tuscany, Italy, experiencing the epitome of my scholastic career by creating a piece of physical theatre for myself …

Between The Map And The Territory: Taking The World Apart In The Age Of Un-Discovery, Carla Lacey Fisher Schwartz May 2013

Between The Map And The Territory: Taking The World Apart In The Age Of Un-Discovery, Carla Lacey Fisher Schwartz

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The map is demonstrative of a basic human impulse, the desire to understand our surroundings and our position within the world. Through the activity of mapmaking, we aspire to comprehend comprehensively, but the very nature of the map allows for only partial understanding. Despite this objective for total knowledge, the blank space of a map is a necessity; in order for a map to be useful it must leave some aspects out. This blank space, along with other blanks in visual representation, is an active silence, and holds meaning in its absence.

While the map attempts to represent a territory, …

Teaching And Evaluation Strategies For Drawing In Design Education: The Use Of Drawing Schemata As A Tool For The In-Class Development Of Drawing For Design, Nora Karina Aguilar, Jose Luis Hernandes Azpeitia May 2013

Teaching And Evaluation Strategies For Drawing In Design Education: The Use Of Drawing Schemata As A Tool For The In-Class Development Of Drawing For Design, Nora Karina Aguilar, Jose Luis Hernandes Azpeitia

Learn X Design Conference Series

Drawing education strategies have been centred in specific skill development models regarding observational accuracy, creativity or expression. New design curricula require effectively integrated proposals that develop these dimensions simultaneously and are focused in the development of professional competencies. Drawing is a fundamental medium to accomplish this task. This paper presents current results of a simple methodology being implemented at OUR INSTITUTION for the research, evaluation and development of drawing in our design students based on the concept of Schema (Kant,1787)(Piaget, 1927)(Andersen, 1977)(Eco, 1998). The fundamental hypothesis of this research is that drawing practice and learning is based in the binomial …

Polykleitos: A Canon Of Beauty And Perfection, Amy Schuman May 2013

Polykleitos: A Canon Of Beauty And Perfection, Amy Schuman

Student Scholarship

When one uses the term ‘antiquity’ they usually think of ancient Rome and ancient Greece. This usually comes to mind since they are the most referenced ancient cultures from history. The ancient Greeks are thought of as great innovators in all academic fields, making advances far beyond their own time. Ancient Romans, although, were a great influence but they borrowed from the Greeks. The surviving knowledge of the ancient Greeks is attributed to the Romans, for without their faithful copying and studies of prized Grecian sculpture most would have been lost to time. Most Greek ‘originals’ were lost but Roman …

Behind The Scenes: A Look At Socio-Cultural Messages In Situation Comedies And Their Effects On Gendered Messages, Victoria S. Hogan May 2013

Behind The Scenes: A Look At Socio-Cultural Messages In Situation Comedies And Their Effects On Gendered Messages, Victoria S. Hogan

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Specific values, characteristics and behaviors are expected for men and women in American society. Previous research has shown that gender stereotypes on television programs are believed to influence society's “perception of appropriate sex roles” and reinforce negative notions about the role of women in society (Fullteron et al. 2000). According to Lee & Shaw (2010), matters have not changed much. Television uses speech that creates images of and attitudes towards women that prevent equality. This study undertakes a content analysis of two prime-time television shows, 2 Broke Girls and Happy Endings. The objective of this research is to analyze the …

Renaissance Drama And Magic: Humanism And Hermeticism In Early Modern England, Caitlin A. Larracey May 2013

Renaissance Drama And Magic: Humanism And Hermeticism In Early Modern England, Caitlin A. Larracey

Honors Program Theses and Projects

With deals made with the devil, the promise of base metals turned into gold, and charms cast over beasts, humans, and spirits, magic has a profound role in the drama of Early Modern England. Even more than magic, be it black or white, the magus repeatedly takes center stage in front of Elizabethan and Jacobean audiences. There exists a fascination in the period with unnatural or supernatural powers, especially in light of the reputations of figures such as the physician-magicians John Dee and Simon Forman, and even King James I. Yet the magic and magician that emerge in principal plays …
