"Listen To The Wild Discord": Jazz In The Chicago Defender And The Louisiana Weekly, 1925-1929, Sarah A. Waits

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This essay will use the views of two African American newspaper columnists, E. Belfield Spriggins of the Louisiana Weekly and Dave Peyton of the Chicago Defender, to argue that though New Orleans and Chicago both occupied a primary place in the history of jazz, in many ways jazz was initially met with ambivalence and suspicion. The struggle between the desire to highlight black achievement in music and the effort to adhere to tenets of middle class respectability play out in their columns. Despite historiographical writings to the contrary, these issues of the influence of jazz music on society were …

"Little Things": Chekhov's Children And Discourse In The Comic Short Story, Rich W. Goode Iv May 2013

"Little Things": Chekhov's Children And Discourse In The Comic Short Story, Rich W. Goode Iv

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

While most critics agree that Anton Chekhov is a funny writer and much critical commentary about his comedic techniques identifies how Chekhov is humorous, none examines why readers find him so. Using the tools of cognitive science, this paper explores the cognitive processes behind humor and narrative, as well as Chekhov’s exploitation of them for comical effect in his early short stories – namely the very concise and blatantly humorous “Kids,” “Grisha,” “Vanka,” and “At Home” – and uncovers, in these early writings, the origins of his celebrated and oft-imitated authorial legacy.

Assimilation In Charles W. Chesnutt's Works, Mary C. Harris May 2013

Assimilation In Charles W. Chesnutt's Works, Mary C. Harris

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Charles W. Chesnutt captures the essence of the Post Civil War period and gives examples of the assimilation process for African Americans into dominant white culture. In doing so, he shows the resistance of the dominant culture as well as the resilience of the African American culture. It is his belief that through literature he could encourage moral reform and eliminate racial discrimination. As an African American author who could pass for white, he is able to share his own experiences and to develop black characters who are ambitious and intelligent. As a result, he leaves behind a legacy …

Parsing The Non-Finito: Systems, Thresholds And Imaginative Space In Representation, Daniel Kelly Iv May 2013

Parsing The Non-Finito: Systems, Thresholds And Imaginative Space In Representation, Daniel Kelly Iv

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Between the actualized built spaces that the artist moves around and through on a daily basis and the more abstract systems we invent to represent these structures sits the illusion of space and structure found in his drawings and paintings. Constant turnover within the built environment offers not only content, but rich analogy for his artistic practice. The artist’s endeavors in the studio in many ways echo the genesis, evolution and possibility he observes in the transitioning city around him. In the actual making of the work, he gleans from traditional methods of drawing and painting, from the architectural lexicon, …

The Tween Ghost Story: Articulating The Tween Experience, Erica Rostedt May 2013

The Tween Ghost Story: Articulating The Tween Experience, Erica Rostedt

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the early 1980s, a particular kind of “tween” (children aged 10-14) ghost story emerged. Through examining multiple examples of tween ghost stories (such as Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn, Stonewords by Pam Conrad, and Time Windows by Kathryn Reiss), this paper illustrates the ways in which these stories are remarkably consistent in nature, and then investigates this sub-genre’s specific and consistent articulation of the struggle of moving away from childhood and into the teenage years. By using a ghost to create a situation so off balance (a ghost who is stuck, a protagonist who is in …

Ritual Process, Kevin A. Baer May 2013

Ritual Process, Kevin A. Baer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

My art is a means for investigating the passage of time, the decay of physical things, and the truth of mortality. I explore these concepts through process-oriented sculptures that emphasize ritual and material. The process is communicated with the creation of relics, often existing as drawings or the remains of degenerated sculptures. These relics bear witness to the process. I focus on themes of temporal change and death because they remain central to our metaphysical and physical existence. I see a diminished reverence for the power of death in our culture, and through my work I aim to pay homage …

Analyzing Locational And Socio-Economic Factors To Determine Efficacy Of Trio Programs In Metropolitan New Orleans, Rita S. Camaille

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study is a predictive model to ascertain whether various factors such as income, educational attainment, and ethnic background could predict the on students participating in TRIO programs at the University of New Orleans. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration identified low-income and first-generation students as the most under-served population needing attention as well as those most “at-risk.” Educational Talent Search programs were founded in 1965 as outreach programs to provide services and activities to the “at-risk” population to promote high school retention and graduation rates. The University of New Orleans has three Educational Talent Search programs serving Jefferson, Orleans, and …

But, You're Just A Girl, Sasha Mctee May 2013

But, You're Just A Girl, Sasha Mctee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores an emerging genre of the female hero archetype that is rooted in Joseph Campbell’s traditional definition and exemplified by Buffy Summers of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kara “Starbuck” Thrace of Battlestar Galactica. As representations of the female hero within this genre, they reimagine pre-existing stereotypes, such as the female victim and the male hotshot pilot, and then pursue a hero’s journey of death and resurrection that is unique because of their gender. This new trend is the result of third-wave feminism and necessary for the further development of feminist literary works, particularly within …

Versioning: Full-Scale Prototyping As A Prototype For Design Education?, Robert M. Arens, Edmond P. Salikis

Learn X Design Conference Series

This paper discusses the development of an emergency shelter that can be inexpensively mass-produced and rapidly deployed to disaster relief sites. A seeming simple project wrapped in multiple shrouds of complexity, the project demanded that we not only design an object, but also devise the process for its production, determine how it would be constructed and sourced, identify the most efficient assembly sequence, and outline a strategy for the shelters’ distribution. The authors saw this project with its equal emphasis on design, assembly and production as the perfect opportunity to apply the concept of versioning, a strategy that borrows heavily …
