Civic Vision: Seeing The Invisible On The Path To A Just Society, Ronald J.O. Flores
Civic Vision: Seeing The Invisible On The Path To A Just Society, Ronald J.O. Flores
Baccalaureate Addresses
Sociology professor Ronald J. O. Flores once collaborated with the Mohawk Nation to offer undergraduate service learning seminar on Native American Children and Youth and shares his insights on this experience with the Connecticut College community gathered for Baccalaureate, an annual celebration of the spiritual diversity of the graduating class.
Of the students in the class, he found that, "by spending time and sharing experiences, by engaging in honest and open dialogue, and by working together in the spirit of reciprocity and equality, they began to see, to feel, and perhaps to understand the injustices faced by those who were …

"Your Majesty's Friend": Foreign Alliances In The Reign Of Henri Christophe, Jennifer Yvonne Conerly
"Your Majesty's Friend": Foreign Alliances In The Reign Of Henri Christophe, Jennifer Yvonne Conerly
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In modern historiography, Henri Christophe, king of northern Haiti from 1816-1820, is generally given a negative persona due to his controlling nature and his absolutist regime, but in his correspondence, he engages in diplomatic collaborations with two British abolitionists, William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson, in order to improve his new policies and obtain international recognition. This paper argues that the Haitian king and the abolitionists engaged in a mutual collaboration in which each party benefitted from the correspondence. Christophe used the advice of the British abolitionists in order to increase the power of Haiti into a powerful black state, and …

The Good Doctor: Exploring And Designing A Journey Through Simon And Chekhov’S Russia, Melinda W. Bruns
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an exploratory look at the process for designing the costumes for Neil Simon’s The Good Doctor. This production was produced at the University of New Orleans as part of its 2012-2013 season.
Within this thesis we explore the multifaceted journey of the costume design process. As a designer, it is one’s job to use both historical and textual analysis in order to create a design that supports the thematic structure of the play. The following journey begins with initial research on the complex relationship between Neil Simon and his subject Anton Chekhov. It continues to include …
Perceptions Of Loss And Grief Experiences Within Religious Burial And Funeral, Hyacinth C. Okafor
Perceptions Of Loss And Grief Experiences Within Religious Burial And Funeral, Hyacinth C. Okafor
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore perceptions of loss and grief experiences within religious rites and rituals vis-à-vis the context of counseling. Literature indicated the need for a better understanding of grief and loss experiences from bereaved individuals’ perspectives and the context within which loss and grief experiences occur (Dillenburger & Keenan, 2005; Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Participants for this study included 10 purposefully selected Catholic members from two Catholic Church parishes in Nigeria, Africa. All participants had experienced loss and grief, had participated in Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals, and were …

New Challenges, New Strategies In Research Applied To Design And Communication, Juan Arrausi
Learn X Design Conference Series
The paper discusses the evaluation of a master’s degree in design and communication in Spain, and the impact of the evaluation on the development for future of the programme. Five years ago the first Master’s Degree in Design and Communication (MUDIC) started at the Elisava design school in Barcelona. The social, labour, economic and academic situation has changed not only in our country but in many of those from where we receive our students. The premises with which the MUDIC was built must therefore be subject to revision. Now, half a decade later, the list of competencies sounds out of …
Max Steiner And The Music Of Casablanca, Coralin Davelaar
Max Steiner And The Music Of Casablanca, Coralin Davelaar
The Hilltop Review
Not only did Max Steiner not like the song, he thought that it was not appropriate for the film. Nevertheless, as every film buff knows, ―As Time Goes By‖ stayed in the film Casablanca, and the song has almost become emblematic of the film itself. However, it is but one song in a very musical film that proved challenging for veteran film composer Max Steiner. It was not the amount of material that he had to compose (as with Gone with the Wind), but rather the music that was already built into the drama that he had to incorporate into …

Feminist Research Ethics, Informed Consent, And Potential Harms, Melinda Mccormick
Feminist Research Ethics, Informed Consent, And Potential Harms, Melinda Mccormick
The Hilltop Review
Feminist research is fraught with ethical dilemmas, some of which concern informed consent and the possibility of potential harms to respondents. I review several dilemmas addressed in the literature and how feminist researchers resolved the issues. I also look at the National Association of Social Workers‘ Code of Ethics and how the concepts of dual relationships and boundaries in social work practice may offer helpful guidelines to feminist re-searchers.

Contesting The Marginalization Of Female Leadership In Sports: The Struggle For Equal Opportunities In Men's Collegiate And Professional Basketball, Caitlain Tinker
Contesting The Marginalization Of Female Leadership In Sports: The Struggle For Equal Opportunities In Men's Collegiate And Professional Basketball, Caitlain Tinker
Cultural Studies Capstone Papers
This feminist critique interrogates the discourses and practices of gender discrimination in men's professional and collegiate sporting institutions in the United States. This study focuses on delineating and 'naming' the discriminatory ideologies that are (re)produced by dominant social and cultural institutions, revealing in the process how these practices (over)determine gender equality in the professional and collegiate sporting field. To this end, I perform a post-structuralist discourse analysis of what Louis Althusser calls the dominant 'ideological state apparatuses,' namely schools, the media and sporting institutions. I argue that these institutions coalesce to form a network of power that produces, reproduces, and …
We've Got Rythm, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus
We've Got Rythm, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus
Programs
Welcome to our spring season concert "We've Got Rythm", as we celebrate some of the most influential music written in the 20th century by American composers. What a pleasure it is for the BGMC to bring music from the American Songbook alive for you this evening; music that many of you have asked us to perform for years. I believe it is also a very poignant time for LGBT Americans as we celebrate composers who brought us iconic music, some of which has been embraced for decades by our community but also some who were gay themselves.

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
My body of work involves photographic and video explorations around the concept that cinema has a great influence over who we are as a culture and as individuals. I use the tableaux technique to illustrate the archetypal language of film through fictional film stills. Congruously, I use video to interject myself into scenes from movies, referencing the way viewers mentally project themselves into movies as they watch them. I am interested in decoding visual stereotypes promoted by cinema through the lens of my own experience with movies.

"Black Cowboys: Self-Sufficiency In The American West Through The Ideology Of Booker T. Washington", Paige M. Brown
"Black Cowboys: Self-Sufficiency In The American West Through The Ideology Of Booker T. Washington", Paige M. Brown
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Despite the black cowboy's considerable achievement, the history of their lives remains largely uncovered. Most historiographies present a sympathetic picture, but what is missing is the voice of the black cowboys. Using the views and ideologies of Booker T. Washington, black cowboys were able to become self-sufficient men. This thesis will present a comparison and contrast between the historiography and autobiographies of black cowboys. Furthermore, giving black cowboys a voice through the philosophies of Booker T. Washington and presenting an argument on why the stories and histories of black cowboys have only recently been resurrected, largely because popular media in …

Patriot, Pet, And Pest: America Debates The Dog's Worth During World War I, Alison G. Laurence
Patriot, Pet, And Pest: America Debates The Dog's Worth During World War I, Alison G. Laurence
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
During World War I, dogs held a contradictory place in American society. These animals functioned simultaneously as patriots, pets, and pests. This essay surveys the ways in which dogs either contributed to the war effort or seemed to subvert it through their uselessness as companion animals and their predation as feral ones. Ultimately, even worsening conditions on the homefront could not cause the American public as a whole to consider surrendering its affection for these animals, including the worthless ones. In the face of impending legislation that threatened to eliminate man’s best friend as a war measure, the American people …
