SURGE
I will admit that I wish my best friend was Duckie, I want to attend just one Saturday detention with Emilio Estevez, and I listen to an unhealthy amount of music from the Smiths and the Psychedelic Furs. Yes, I am a child of the nineties, but I spent many high school nights watching John Hughes films and attempting to dye my hair the perfect shade of Molly Ringwald red. [excerpt]

So What Do Design Students Really Think? Exploring Perceptions Of Learning Landscapes, Louise Barbour, Lindy Osborne, Glenda Caldwell
So What Do Design Students Really Think? Exploring Perceptions Of Learning Landscapes, Louise Barbour, Lindy Osborne, Glenda Caldwell
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper investigates learning environments from the view of the key users - students. Recent literature on designing Learning Landscapes indicates a near absence of the student voice, assuming that the majority of students are either uninterested or unable to express what they want or need, in a learning environment. The focus of this research is to reveal Architecture and Fashion Design students’ perceptions of their learning environments. Furthermore, this study questions the appropriateness of usual design of learning spaces for Design students, or if the environment needs to be specifically catered for the learning of different disciplines of Design, …
Remember The Ladies: Individuality, Community, And Equality Of Early And Modern Women, Rebekka A. Strom
Remember The Ladies: Individuality, Community, And Equality Of Early And Modern Women, Rebekka A. Strom
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
As scholars in the twenty-first century, we’ve defined the “modern” era, in part, in terms of the increasing value placed upon the individual. Yet, “modernity” also encompasses the growing tensions between the individual and his or her community. The contemporary paradox, therefore, is how social modernization shifts from a linear progression from a hierarchal communal identity, to a level playing field of vibrant individualism and equality. How do we fortify strong communities without establishing unequal hierarchies? How can we, in the technological age, advocate individual pursuits while reinforcing communal bonds? In addition to Abigail Adams, in her personal correspondence, historians …

Bonnie Scotland And La Belle France: Commonalites And Cultural Links., Moira Speirs Ms
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France begun in 1295 with the treaty of Paris and continued until the Treaty of Union between Scotland and England in 1707. Successive French and Scottish monarchs kept the alliance in place with formal treaties and marriage alliances. These strong family connections among the ruling classes influenced all ranks in society. Scotland’s military support of France in wars between France and England resulted in many Scottish lords being granted lands and titles as a reward for their service to the French crown. The ties between the two countries developed as increasing numbers of followers …
Understanding The Civil War, Charles O. Boyd
Understanding The Civil War, Charles O. Boyd
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper examines why the American Civil War took place and what the modern significance of the conflict is. The paper demonstrates that slavery was indeed the main cause of Southern secession and debunks, one by one, the arguments against that view. It also argues that modern day tributes to the Confederacy are offensive and that the Civil War should be understood as part of a long struggle in the United States for equal rights.
Why I Am Not A Materialist, John Cramer Dr.
Why I Am Not A Materialist, John Cramer Dr.
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Materialism is a world view that insists the world is nothing but matter. My purpose here is to show it is not a viable world view. Its monism creates severe difficulties for it, centered on the nature of the human mind and the truth of beliefs. Nor is it fit for human consumption because it denies human uniqueness and denigrates human needs.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Today is a special day, a momentous day. It's a day I've thought about for a long time. A day for beginnings and a day for looking back. So I'm looking back for today's blog, to one of my favorite posts. It's simple and meaningful to me. It's about a place that has changed my life so much. And today the ripples from that place are changing it again. And it's wonderful. [excerpt]
尼采早期著作中本原和共同體之思, Wing Sum Law
尼采早期著作中本原和共同體之思, Wing Sum Law
Lingnan Theses

Fostering Student Engagement In An Upper-Level, Online Seminar On The History Of Sexuality: Lessons Learned About Pedagogy And Course Design To Deepen Students’ Learning, Kristine Rabberman
Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference
GSWS 422 “History of Sexuality” has been offered for four years in the online summer program at the University of Pennsylvania. The instructor leads advanced undergraduate and graduate students through a highly interactive seminar class in which they learn how to analyze critically works in the history of sexuality, exploring sexual identities, roles and norms from Ancient Greece and Rome, to the United States in the 21st century. Students are required to demonstrate their critical engagement and understanding of central debates and themes, methodological challenges, and issues of change versus continuity. One of the instructor’s goals in teaching the …

Connecting For Impact: Multidisciplinary Approaches To Innovation In Small To Medium Sized Enterprises (Smes), Marc Bailey, Neil Smith, Mersha Aftab
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper reveals the methodology developed and adopted by groups of Multidisciplinary Design Innovation Masters students whilst working on projects with regional Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s). It exposes an eight-stage approach and shows how the creation of a ‘problem-space tapestry’ acts as a mediator between different disciplinary approaches. The authors used a combinationof observation, interview, post project-analysis and auto ethnographic reflection in order to uncover this process and to draw conclusions about the conditions that are necessary to support university based multidisciplinary design-led innovation projects of this type.

What The Unglamorous Side Of Study Abroad Taught Me, Kathryn E. Bucolo
What The Unglamorous Side Of Study Abroad Taught Me, Kathryn E. Bucolo
SURGE
I’ve been gallivanting around this beautiful planet posing as a study abroad student taking classes and writing papers for the past academic year, one semester in England and one in Argentina (where I still am) and, just like all the brochures, promotions, and panels of study abroad survivors say, it has been absolutely chock-full of amazing experiences, people, places, foods—I think “transformative” is the proper term.
But transformative can mean many things. It doesn’t just mean that you “find yourself” or “change your life”—it means you see the less glamorous stuff about yourself, too. [excerpt]

Who Is The Designer?: An Experience Of Collectivism In Basic Design Course, Humanur Bagli, Koray Gelmez
Learn X Design Conference Series
This study focuses on a specific Basic Design exercise, which has been conducted for four following semesters in the Department of Industrial Product Design at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey in 2010-2011. In this exercise, students were expected to design a Jury Invitation (card) collectively specialized for the specific semester. The exercise has four main phases to which students followed: Generating ideas in the form of models individually, voting, redesigning the top four or five collectively, and finalizing and reproducing. In this study, we aim to discuss the process of this exercise and the outcomes of it in the light …

Senior Class Speaker 95th Commencement Address, Amy Cheetham '13
Commencement Addresses
“Our most powerful tool is our liberal arts education,” said Cheetham, the daughter of 1974 and 1975 Connecticut College graduates Thomas and Joan Cheetham. “We’ve been taught to think critically about the very foundations of modern society: to question our actions and our ideas, and the thoughts and deeds of those who came before us. When we leave here today, our most immediate challenges may be renting that first apartment and getting that first job. But our biggest challenge is one we’ll face for the rest of our lives: to use our educations to chase our passions and cling to …

President Higdon's 95th Commencement Address, Leo I. Higdon, Jr.
Commencement Addresses
President Lee Higdon said the Class of 2013 has met the challenges he outlined for them when they arrived during a torrential downpour in the late summer of 2009.
"You have become leaders on this campus – relied upon by students, faculty and staff for your opinions, your expertise and your involvement,” he told the graduates.
President Higdon added that the Class of 2013 had the honor of attending Connecticut College during an important time in its history. The Class celebrated the College’s Centennial; witnessed the ribbon cuttings for the new fitness center and the new science center; was …

Commencement Addresses
Emmy-winning television writer and producer Howard Gordon told the Class of 2013," The fictional characters I create live in the same crazy, complicated world as the rest of us. How they navigate through the world is what makes them compelling. How you navigate your way through the world is what will make your story compelling.”
The best way to do it, he told the Class of 2013, is to heed the sage words of advice printed on the poster in his office: “Work hard and be nice to people.”
He apologized for "what may sound like fortune-cookie philosophy," but said …

The Music Without Melody Of John Cage, The Literature Without Words Of James Joyce, The Art Without A Subject Of Joseph Beuys And The Architecture Without Construction Of Enric Miralles, Irma Arribas
Learn X Design Conference Series
The contradictory is an appearance. Investigating John Cage, James Joyce, Joseph Beuys and Enric Miralles we get to learn that game, constriction, contradiction and chance are homogeneous strategies in the processes based on an artistic evolutionary commitment, being this a key factor to assume established creative processes in a critical realism and a relational aesthetic. Taking reality as it is, not escaping from what the voices mean to be a block for the development and even be open to the dialogue, assume the complexity of the real thing, not shutting oneself up in the known, but being open to the …
