Baldwin I Of Jerusalem: Defender Of The Latin Kingdom Of Jerusalem, John Francis Lowe Jun 2013

Baldwin I Of Jerusalem: Defender Of The Latin Kingdom Of Jerusalem, John Francis Lowe

Dissertations and Theses

The reign of King Baldwin I (1100-1118) has thus far received little noteworthy attention by historians as the important pivotal period following the First Crusade conquest of Jerusalem in 1099. The two decades of his rule marked the extension of Latin conquests in the east, most notably by the conquest of the important coastal cities of Arsulf, Acre, Caesarea, Beirut and Sidon. These vital ports for the early Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem provided outlets to the sea for commerce, as well as safe harbors for incoming assistance from the west. Further, Baldwin led in the establishment of strong secular control …

Revisiting The Hebron “Sheep Tablet” Considerations For Late Bronze Age Canaanite Habitation Of Hebron, Charles Wilson, Dr. Jeffrey Chadwick

Journal of Undergraduate Research

To research the Hebron “Sheep Tablet,” a cuneiform account text recording counts of sheep, goats, and rams, I first found all of the published materials mentioning the text and read them. The tablet is mentioned in seven publications. Finding and reading the published materials was not too difficult; making sense of the paleographic assessments of the tablet text by Anbar and Na’aman (1986), and Rainey (1999) was. To refresh my knowledge on cuneiform, I read C. Walker’s Cuneiform (1987). To make sure that I understood Anbar and Na’aman’s, and Rainey’s paleographic assessments correctly, I conferred with Edward Stratford and Paul …

Bringing Practice To The Theory: Project-Led Education In Industrial Design Engineering, Winnie Dankers, Hiske Schuurman-Hemmer, Thonie Van Den Boomgaard, Eric Lutters

Learn X Design Conference Series

The University of Twente started an educational programme on Industrial Design Engineering in 2001. The structure of the programme builds on project-led education, mainly to immerse students quicker and more profoundly in the field of expertise they are educated in. Given the impact of educational projects of considerable scope, complexity and scale on the overall programme, adequate balancing of the learning aims and implementation of projects and courses is essential. Based on the criteria for the programme, a reference architecture is devised that guides the way in which the programme is arranged. By means of an example, depicting one of …

“Há Um Mundo Que Se Quebra Quando Eu (Não) Falo": Women's Speech And The Power Of Silence In Teolinda Gersão’S O Silêncio, Robert Marcus Jeffery Jun 2013

“Há Um Mundo Que Se Quebra Quando Eu (Não) Falo": Women's Speech And The Power Of Silence In Teolinda Gersão’S O Silêncio, Robert Marcus Jeffery

Theses and Dissertations

Teolinda Gersão's debut novel, O silêncio, addresses two issues which several prominent feminist writers and critics have discussed: women's search for identity, and the difficulty women encounter when expressing themselves in a man's world. To this second point, this discussion has been varied but comes to a consensus around the need for women to vocalize as a means of asserting themselves. However, the approach that O silêncio brings to this matter is completely the opposite, revealing instead how silence-a form of controlled non-speech-can be more empowering than words. The novel comes to this conclusion as the protagonist Lídia-a headstrong young …

Disruptions In The Dream City: Unsettled Ideologies At The 1905 World's Fair In Portland, Oregon, Kat Cleland Jun 2013

Disruptions In The Dream City: Unsettled Ideologies At The 1905 World's Fair In Portland, Oregon, Kat Cleland

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the experiences of fairgoers at the Lewis and Clark Centennial, American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair held in Portland, Oregon from June to October of 1905. Historians have framed world's fairs and international expositions as sites of legitimating narratives and restagings of empire and nationhood. This thesis focuses on women, Asian Americans, and Native Americans who interrupted and disrupted the performance and exhibition of U.S. imperialism in the specific case of Portland, Oregon. It considers who benefitted from or endured loss in the demonstrations of imperial culture at the Fair. Following the premises that metropolitan and colonial …

Nailing Down Truths: Evental Historiography In Fors Clavigera, Sari Lynn Carter Jun 2013

Nailing Down Truths: Evental Historiography In Fors Clavigera, Sari Lynn Carter

Theses and Dissertations

The theoretical framework of this study is intended to explore the potential Alain Badiou's theory of event, truth, and faithful subject may provide for understanding literature. This study applies this framework to John Ruskin's late and lesser-known work Fors Clavigera: Letters to the Workmen and Labourers of Great Britain (1871-1884). Both Ruskin's fragmented style in Fors Clavigera and his notion of historical truth developed therein have been read as madness and as reactionary romanticism. I examine key metanarrative moments in Fors Clavigera where Ruskin reflects on his historiographical choices and methods. Through my analysis, I show how Badiou's theory provides …

From Plato To Ipads: Dialogical Opportunities In Twenty-First Century Secondary English Classrooms, Emily Ensign Jun 2013

From Plato To Ipads: Dialogical Opportunities In Twenty-First Century Secondary English Classrooms, Emily Ensign

Theses and Dissertations

Technology offers students and educators an uncharted digital landscape of possibilities. Some educators feel strongly that technology enhances the classroom; others feel that it doesn't necessarily improve traditional teaching methods, and some even feel that it is detrimental to students' ability to focus or engage in face-to-face conversations. My project focuses on critical dialogue as defined by various theorists, and explores whether or not secondary English classrooms that use iPads continue to use the dialogical methods as outlined by these theorists (most of which could not have foreseen today's technological advancements). By relying on these theorists and scholars to provide …

The Effects Of Pre-Speaking Planning On Students' Performance During Speaking Tasks, Celine Gaillard Jun 2013

The Effects Of Pre-Speaking Planning On Students' Performance During Speaking Tasks, Celine Gaillard

Theses and Dissertations

Research has explored the impact of various planning types (i.e. different ways to help students prepare for a language task by, for instance, giving them time and/or specific instructions) on the fluency, complexity, and accuracy of second language learners (e.g., Ellis, 2009). However, results have been mixed and studies have never investigated the impact of pre-speaking activities such as those proposed by Thompson (2009), a teacher-led planning focusing on both form and content with students. Previous research suggests that this type of planning could benefit students: Foster & Skehan (1999) believe that teacher-led planning is effective in comparison to other …

Technology And Design As Part Of A Public School From 1st To 10th Grade, Liv Klakegg Dahlin, Liv Oddrun Voll, Anne-Gunn Svorkmo

Learn X Design Conference Series

Technology and Design was introduced as a multidisciplinary subject in Norwegian school in the context of the new curriculum in 2006. The topic should be a collaborative effort between the subjects of Science, Arts and Crafts, and Mathematics. In working with Technology and Design students develop a composite competence on product, process and context that we call Technology and Design expertise. There has been, and still remains, challenges associated with practicing the subject Technology and Design. The complex and many-facetted areas of expertise cause teachers within the traditional school subjects to experience the subject as strange, and it's challenging to …

Ikalanga Derived Personal Names: A Functionalist Approach, Budzani Gabanamotse-Mogara Jun 2013

Ikalanga Derived Personal Names: A Functionalist Approach, Budzani Gabanamotse-Mogara

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article discusses the way a personal name is derived, the context in which a name is given in Ikalanga, as well as the meaning behind the name. It is argued that Ikalanga personal names are derived from different grammatical categories such as verbs, possessives, nouns, adjectives, etc. Ikalanga personal names have different meanings. These meanings are mostly related to incidents that happen before pregnancy, at birth and after birth. The article argues that most of the time the meaning is known to the namer, and not the one to whom the name is bestowed. The article also looks at …

From Teaching Sustainable Product Design To Teaching Sustainable Behaviour Design, Johannes Zachrisson Daae, Casper Boks Jun 2013

From Teaching Sustainable Product Design To Teaching Sustainable Behaviour Design, Johannes Zachrisson Daae, Casper Boks

Learn X Design Conference Series

Traditionally, sustainable product design research and education has been focused on manufacturing and end-of-life aspects With a new found focus on the use stage, as in the research area of Design for Sustainable Behaviour (DfSB), a better understanding of how a focus on behavioural aspects can reduce life cycle impacts has emerged. Preliminary findings from on-going DfSB research were used as basis for the development of a method to guide designers in selecting promising design principles that can contribute to change user behaviour into more environmentally friendly patterns. This method is presented, and experiences with using the booklet in a …
