From Theory To Practice: Translating Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises, Sunny Ann Hendry Jun 2013

From Theory To Practice: Translating Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises, Sunny Ann Hendry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises through the lenses of literary translation, migrant writing and epistolary genres, as well as through critical theory of Chen's poetics in order to inform a translation of said novel from French into English. This theoretical groundwork is accompanied by analysis of the process of the translation, including specifications, methods used, and justifications for translation decisions. Les Lettres Chinoises is Ying Chen's second novel, written in French rather than her native Chinese language. Spanning a fifty-seven letter exchange between Shanghai and Montreal, Chen's choice to write in language other than her first, as …

An Exploration Of Design Thinking Across Educational Domains, Demelza Cusens, Hugh Byrd Jun 2013

An Exploration Of Design Thinking Across Educational Domains, Demelza Cusens, Hugh Byrd

Learn X Design Conference Series

To teach design effectively foundational design thinking needs to be understood. Treating the design process as a mysterious mental talent provides little scope for teaching the subject. This study explores the origin of designs and how experience impacts the sophistication of design ideas across educational domains. Secondary and tertiary students were given a common architectural brief and students’ outcomes were compared and contrasted to seek commonalities or differences in their approaches to solving design problems. Additionally, interviews were conducted with participants and a panel of design experts to further explore the students’ design practices. The results provide insight into design …

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein Jun 2013

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

The words “knowledge” and “information” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the connection between them is complex and problematic. Knowledge is a mental product gained from engaging with information. All educational subjects, scholarly disciplines, occupations, and activities produce knowledge as well as information. Because libraries encompass potentially all subjects, professional vision in librarianship would benefit from an examination of knowledge that transcends the methods and topical concerns of individual disciplines. An interdisciplinary (or transdisciplinary) framework in which to view knowledge was pioneered in the post-Sputnik age by Fritz Machlup and Michael Polanyi. Their insights have stimulated scholars to develop research, publications, …

Hcid: Who Is An Interaction Designer?, Alma Leora Culén, Joshi Govind Suhas, Atif Abdelhakeem Jun 2013

Hcid: Who Is An Interaction Designer?, Alma Leora Culén, Joshi Govind Suhas, Atif Abdelhakeem

Learn X Design Conference Series

The development of technology with all its ubiquity and pervasiveness provides new opportunities and new challenges for the interaction design practitioners, both those coming from the design tradition and computer science tradition. An increased level of problem solving and creative thinking is needed when designing for interactions with new technology. In order to develop the skills and methods for dealing with increased complexity and connectedness of technology, human computer interaction design (HCID) education needs to embrace to a larger extent design practices and design thinking. This paper aims to answer two main questions: 1) why is it necessary to teach …

Immigrant Brides In Taiwan: New Land, New Hope?, Yuwen Chen Jun 2013

Immigrant Brides In Taiwan: New Land, New Hope?, Yuwen Chen

Student Research Initiative

In the last two decades, transnational marriages have been growing in Taiwan, Republic of China (R.O.C). Increasing numbers of Taiwanese men have married bride immigrants from Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia) and Mainland China. These women usually are from low socio-economic class and have little formal education (Chen, Katsurada & Wu, 1998; Tsai, 2006; Tsai & Hsiao 2006). Their offspring are the so-called “New Taiwanese Children”(NTC). The academic performance of New Taiwanese Children has become a contested issue in Taiwanese society, because these children are viewed by some as not being able to contribute to …

Creating Community While Learning Italian: An Experiment In Communitarian Language Learning, David Sabey, Jennifer Brown Jun 2013

Creating Community While Learning Italian: An Experiment In Communitarian Language Learning, David Sabey, Jennifer Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a student instructor of an Italian 102 class, I adopted an action-research methodology in hopes to understand more fully how to develop sense of community in a language-learning classroom environment. Thus, my research goal was twofold: 1. I wanted to work with my students to create the ideal classroom community. I hoped that my students would get to know each other, enjoy their time in class, in each other’s company, and mutually help each other to learn and use Italian. This aspect of my goal is associated chiefly with the positive affect that would derive from the kind of …

Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown Jun 2013

Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In matters of international politics today, Russia is the wildcard. Its history of power on the international stage, along with an impressive military and large sphere of influence give it a commanding presence, even as it still struggles to find its identity after a swift political and economic change following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is increasingly important to pay attention to Russia, and therefore it is equally important to know the standing the US has in that country. There is no doubt that the US has had a major impact on Russia in the last twenty years. …

Native Speaker Judgments On The Accentedness And Personal Traits Of American And Korean L2 Learners Of German, Charles Richards, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling Jun 2013

Native Speaker Judgments On The Accentedness And Personal Traits Of American And Korean L2 Learners Of German, Charles Richards, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Everyday listeners make personal judgments about the people with whom they are speaking based on the accent or voice quality of the speaker. Studies have shown that a person’s speech– independent of accent–can influence a listener to make judgments about the speaker’s intelligence, sociability, trustworthiness, and a number of other personal traits (Hiraga, 1999). But what happens when “foreign” accent is added to the equation? Purnell et al. (2005) found that when the same person reading from the same script called to make appointments to see apartments, the speaker had more success getting an appointment when he spoke with a …

Imagining A Controversy: The Taft-Katsura Memorandum In Korean Historical Memory, Joseph Seeley, Dr. Kirk Larsen Jun 2013

Imagining A Controversy: The Taft-Katsura Memorandum In Korean Historical Memory, Joseph Seeley, Dr. Kirk Larsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the most important lessons I learned over the course of this project was that a finished research project is often dramatically different from what is originally planned. When I began consulting with my advisor about doing an ORCA project together, our initial idea was to explore how Koreans remember the history of early U.S.-Korean foreign relations from 1866-1945 with the goal of eventually publishing an article in a scholarly journal. After beginning my research in earnest, however, I soon discovered the vast number of potential sources related to this topic. Knowing that there was simply too much information …

Boeing Boeing, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Jun 2013

Boeing Boeing, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2013 Summer Theatre

A hit comedy similar in vein to Shakespeare’s comedies of merry misadventures and mistaken identities, Boeing Boeing tells the exploits of French bachelor Bernard and his lovely female flight attendants. Three flight attendants, to be exact, from three different countries: and they all believe they’re engaged to Bernard! In the past, Bernard has been able to juggle these women due to his detailed timetable of his fiancés’ flight schedules. When the situation changes and all of the women end up at his apartment on the same day, Bernard (with help from his bewildered friend Robert) struggles to keep them from …

Russian Pronunciation Difficulties For Native Speakers Of English: Errors And Meaning Alterations, Vitalijs Sadovskis, Dr. Grant Lundberg Jun 2013

Russian Pronunciation Difficulties For Native Speakers Of English: Errors And Meaning Alterations, Vitalijs Sadovskis, Dr. Grant Lundberg

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The major goal of this research was to determine through both theoretical analysis and practical application which Russian pronunciation difficulties for native English speakers result in a misunderstanding of meaning rather than foreign accent. Therefore, it focused on Russian pronunciation errors which can significantly hinder communication and understanding of speech by those who listen. This research took into account the differences between English and Russian sound inventory, thus indicating not only possible stumbling blocks for any speakers of Russian as a non-native language, but also denoting specific difficulties for those who speak English as their first language. The major stumbling …

Discovering Quotidian Kiev In Three Social Classes, Danielle Leavitt, Dr. Patrick Madden Jun 2013

Discovering Quotidian Kiev In Three Social Classes, Danielle Leavitt, Dr. Patrick Madden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Because anti-Soviet sentiments dominated the western stage for roughly the past century, very little literature exists in regards to post-Soviet daily life in former Soviet countries and cities. Specifically interesting are the socio-economic differences that emerged in former Soviet communities following the fall of the Soviet Union.

The goal of the project was to establish correlation between a Russian person’s demographics, their emotional views and reactions regarding nuclear threats in 1999 and 2012. Research will include the interrupting of the data that is already present, and research will include looking into the political establishments in 1999. The benefits of the research are: establishing an understanding between nations and being able to view the post-Soviet Russian mindset concerning nuclear war.

The Impact Of Different Learning Styles On Language Study And The Formation Of Long Term Memory, Benjamin Black, Dr. Masakazu Watabe Jun 2013

The Impact Of Different Learning Styles On Language Study And The Formation Of Long Term Memory, Benjamin Black, Dr. Masakazu Watabe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my ORCA project has been to research different methods of language study and ultimately shed light on the method of study that will best engage the student in the target language, keep their motivation to study as high as possible and result in efficient storage of studied materials into the long term memory where it will be available for later retrieval. Through studying the effectiveness of different types of foreign language study my hope is to facilitate a faster and deeper learning of a foreign language by students perusing secondary languages.
