Take My People To The Top, Nadejiah Z. Towns Jun 2013

Take My People To The Top, Nadejiah Z. Towns

SURGE

“…but what I really want to do is help the black people, especially the young black girls…” Did she just say that? Wait, can she say that? Is she wrong for feeling that way? I wonder how other people would feel it they knew she felt this way? So many questions began to run through my mind, but my reaction? I just sat there, nodding. Her body language told me even she knew there was something controversial about what she was saying. Not to mention that she whispered it, you know, the old hand over the mouth gesture. [excerpt …

Histrionic Translation : A Methodology For Promoting The Translator's Inter-Subjectivity As Co-Producer, Fei Yue Tsang Jun 2013

Histrionic Translation : A Methodology For Promoting The Translator's Inter-Subjectivity As Co-Producer, Fei Yue Tsang

Lingnan Theses

This thesis will focus on Ezra Pound’s poem, Histrion, its associations with Stanislavskian method acting and their interface with translation studies. The title of “Histrion” is derived from the Latin word for an actor and Pound clearly wishes to suggest strong parallels between the voice of the poet and the voice of the actor. The work evokes a clairvoyant state of heightened consciousness achieved by the poet, in which he melds the subjectivities of the modern writer and the “souls of all men great” (earlier poets such as Dante and Villon) in a translucent flame of fused …

Integrated Theater Arts And Strategies (Itas) Program And Its Impact On Teachers’ Integration Of Theater Arts Strategies In Targeted Literacy Skills, Cayce J. Cummins

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Visual and performing arts can be taught in isolation or integrated with other core content subjects such as literacy, math, science, and social studies. Jersey City Public Schools (JCPS) implemented the Integrated Theater and Arts Strategies (ITAS) program beginning in the 2008-2009 school year and lasting through the 2010-2011 school year with eight targeted schools. Visual and performing arts standards exist in both the state’s core curriculum standards and national standards. Despite these existing standards, implementation is minimal in JCPS. JCPS plans to develop and implement the ITAS program for targeted schools with sixth and seventh grade students. Language Arts …

Changing Attitudes Towards Art And Design: Activating Expectations And Design Change, Pete Quinn Davis Jun 2013

Changing Attitudes Towards Art And Design: Activating Expectations And Design Change, Pete Quinn Davis

Learn X Design Conference Series

From fashion to furniture, magazines to medical equipment, airplanes to auditoriums, design infiltrates and influences every aspect of contemporary life. But if the benefits of good design are to continue to enhance our lives practically and aesthetically then we must change our views on education for sustainable design in order to meet the greatest challenges of the 21st century. In the transdisciplinary understanding of art and design education today, sustainability issues and approaches are viewed as a complicated series of relationships, some of which go back to the early twentieth century. Art and design is a radically diversified field concerned …

The Scholars' Initiative, Charles Ingrao Jun 2013

The Scholars' Initiative, Charles Ingrao

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

The Scholars’ Initiative addresses the need to break the cycle of nationalist discourse that perpetuates divisions between ethnic groups by (1) creating a common narrative that discredits proprietary myths, while validating “inconvenient facts” that must be acknowledged before mutual recognition and reconciliation can begin, and (2) enlisting regional media and political leaders to acknowledge (and hopefully) endorse) the existence of a common account co-authored by their own scholars.

I’M Glad They Called Me On A Mission: What Young Adults Learn From Serving An Lds Mission, Elizabeth Montgomery, Dr. Brent Top

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Conducting this research project about missionary work in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has been an interesting and enjoyable adventure. The purpose of this report is to chronicle my experiences and to publish a few of the research conclusions we have reached at this point in time. The research is not yet completed, but it is our goal to submit a manuscript for publication in the Religious Educator by March 2013. This report will begin with a discussion of the research process and what I learned from it, after which I will discuss the results as …

Friends And Enemies In Washington: Insights From A Letter From Joseph F. Smith To Susa Young Gates, Mallory Hales Perry, Dr. David Whichurch Jun 2013

Friends And Enemies In Washington: Insights From A Letter From Joseph F. Smith To Susa Young Gates, Mallory Hales Perry, Dr. David Whichurch

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project, made possible by generous funding through the ORCA grant program, focused on the social and political situation surrounding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the turn of the twentieth century. Along with the help and guidance I received from my mentor, Dr. David M. Whitchurch, I explored the issue using primary documents and current research on this time in Church history. This experience offered a priceless opportunity to enhance my research skills, write a paper for publication in Mormon Historical Studies, and complete my honors thesis.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

The first few stanzas of a poem by Howard Glyndon from the folds of The Lutheran and Missionary from late August of 1863:

The days of June were nearly done; The fields, with plenty overrun, Were ripening 'neath the harvest sun In fruitful Pennsylvania!
