Writing Centers And Mandatory Visits: A Bibliography, Eliot Rendleman
Writing Centers And Mandatory Visits: A Bibliography, Eliot Rendleman
Faculty Bibliography
In this bibliography, writing center professionals can find studies that examine the effects of mandatory writing-center visits on students in basic writing programs, first-year composition, and writing-intensive courses across the curriculum. To one degree or another, writing-center administrators should find all the entries useful as they develop internal programs or respond to externally imposed mandatory visit policies at their particular institutions. Additionally, other writing-program administrators, such as WAC directors and FYC directors, should find these entries useful as a starting point to foster a successful relationship with writing-center professionals and to help create policies and faculty development activities that might …

Another Look At The Present Perfect In An Andean Variety Of Spanish: Grammaticalization And Evidentiality In Quiteño Spanish, Jenny Dumont

The existence of an extensive body of literature on the Present Perfect (PP), both Spanish-specific (cf. Alarcos Llorach 1947, Copple 2011, Escobar 1997, Gili Gaya 1972, Howe 2013, Rodríguez Louro 2009, Schwenter 1994, Schwenter & Torres Cacoullos 2008, inter alia) and cross-linguistic studies (cf. Bybee, Perkins, & Pagliuca, 1994, Comrie 1976 Harris, 1982, Squartini & Bertinetto 2000, inter alia), attests to the complexity of accurately describing the uses, meanings and functions of the PP. Among the studies of the PP in Spanish, two main approaches are employed. In one approach, the grammaticalization, analysis of temporal and aspectual uses of the …

A History Of The Early Fairfield Town Lots, Timothy H. Smith
A History Of The Early Fairfield Town Lots, Timothy H. Smith
Adams County History
In 1732 Charles Carroll of Maryland received a grant of 5000 acres of land in present Adams County, Pennsylvania, from the authorities of Maryland. Soon after, a survey of that land, known as “Carroll’s Tract” or “Carroll’s Delight,” was conducted. At that point in time there was still some dispute over the location of the boundary between the two states. A temporary line was agreed upon in 1739, and a more permanent line (very near that temporary boundary) was surveyed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon during the 1760s. And even though it was established that Carroll’s Tract was in …

Southeasterly Town Lot Histories Of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, Timothy H. Smith
Adams County History
Each lot history give the original lot number, original owner, the current address, the owner of the lot in 1860, a description of the lot or dwelling in 1860, a recital of ownership with as much detail as is known, a comprehensive lot history, any known residents in 1860 (may be different than lot owner), and any family notes on any residents mentioned in the lot history. The research is comprehensive, but not necessarily exhaustive. Thorough information for all lots was not always available to the researcher.

Presentation Of The Early Fairfield Town Lots, Timothy H. Smith
Adams County History
What follows is a preliminary study of the Fairfield town lots, focusing on the owners and appearance of the lots up through the American Civil War. Because the existing records are sporadic, some of the lots were more difficult to research than others and will require further research at some future time. This was anticipated going into the project. But it is hoped that this study will provide a foundation for that future research. Undoubtedly, there are many surviving Fairfield deeds still in private hands. It is anticipated that this study will bring attention to the subject and lead to …
Buddhism Between Abstinence And Indulgence: Vegetarianism In The Life And Works Of Jigme Lingpa, Geoffrey Barstow
Buddhism Between Abstinence And Indulgence: Vegetarianism In The Life And Works Of Jigme Lingpa, Geoffrey Barstow
Religion & Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Tibetan Buddhism has long argued for the sanctity of life, condemning the killing of humans and animals alike. For just as long, however, meat has been a staple of the Tibetan diet. Tibetan Buddhism idealizes the practice of compassion, the drive to relieve the suffering of others, including animals. At the same time, however, meat is a standard part of the Tibetan diet, and abandoning it is widely understood to be difficult. This tension between the ethical problems of a meat based diet and the difficulty of vegetarianism has not been lost on Tibetan religious leaders, including the eighteenth century …

Narrative Of Flight: Camden, New Jersey In The Post-War Era, Chuck Hovanic
African & African American Studies Senior Theses
Commuters boarding the Speed Line in the small town of Lindenwold, New Jersey witness a rapid change in landscape as their train whisks them towards Philadelphia. Each stop on the train represents a distinct stage of suburban development ranging from the sprawling McMansions of Voorhees to the tightly packed two-family houses of Collingswood. The passengers that board a the various stations accurately represents the demographics of each town. This broad range of people is treated to a memorable, yet brief glimpse of poverty when the train enter the City of Camden. Gliding above decaying row homes and empty streets, passengers …

Comment On Elizabeth Anderson's The Imperative Of Integration, Ronald Sundstrom
Comment On Elizabeth Anderson's The Imperative Of Integration, Ronald Sundstrom
Philosophy
Elizabeth Anderson draws the attention of moral, social, and political philosophy to the idea of integration, an idea that is most often associated with the struggles to desegregate schools and neighborhoods in the years before and after the U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board. Her book, The Imperative of Integration, is a remarkable contribution because integration is not frequently mentioned outside of debates in the fields of urban affairs and education policy, and residential integration and segregation are rarely mentioned in academic philosophy. There are, however, some concerns with her defense of her defense of integration that …

Cross-Cultural And Multilingual Encounters: Composing Difference In Transnational Contexts, Tika Lamsal
Cross-Cultural And Multilingual Encounters: Composing Difference In Transnational Contexts, Tika Lamsal
Rhetoric and Language Faculty Publications and Research
A rapid increase in the population of cross-cultural and multilingual students and faculty in the U.S. universities has spurred the need to develop a culturally and linguistically more inclusive pedagogy in the teaching of writing. By analyzing the writing of a couple of multilingual and multicultural students from a freshman composition class in a U.S. university, this article explores the ways that help facilitate the writing process of such students. Stressing the value of students’ previous experiences based on their social, cultural, and language differences, the essay argues for the need to recognize and promote the use of multilingual and …
