Sustainable & Effective Integrated Technology In Classrooms, Nada Shokry Jan 2013

Sustainable & Effective Integrated Technology In Classrooms, Nada Shokry

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Leaders and Laggards describe how "educational innovation means discarding policies and practices that no longer serve students while creating opportunities for smart, entrepreneurial problem-solvers to help children learn" (qtd.In Blueprint). This description of Education Innovation relates well with the idea of integrating technology in education. However, this integration process is a complex one that must be carefully done and well researched in order for education process to benefit and develop. The most important point that educational administration has to focus on is how to construct a sustainable practical integration of technology in education to eliminate the drawbacks of traditional teaching …

Islamophobia - Is It Justified?, Nada Shokry

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This research paper discusses the main reasons, triggers and consequences of the so-called Islamophobia phenomenon. The answer to the question raised in the title "Is Islamophobia justified?" is found to be: Islamophobia is a religious discrimination affecting innocent people who are or appear to be Muslims, especially after 9/11. This is due to the generalization of the guilt of any terroristic attack on the whole Muslim community and even on Islam. This answer was concluded through an evaluation of the aspects mentioned earlier which precedes through referencing other scholarly works, showing a collection of statistics developed by well established Research …

Manet's Olympia: Changing The Way People View The Nude, Esther Mizel Jan 2013

Manet's Olympia: Changing The Way People View The Nude, Esther Mizel

Student Scholarship

The nude was the epitome of art in the late 1800s in France. They had to follow set rules in order to be considered " art'' and not, as the subject depicted courtesans. Nudes typically were represented as either goddesses or women in historical stories. Modernists were known for seeing things differently than the rest of the artistic community including when considering nude paintings. Edouard Manet( l832-1883) the "Father of Modernism" was not interested in idealizing the female form. He is known for challenging ideas that the bourgeoisie thought to be fact. He showed the nude for what she really …

Mission Spirituality And Authentic Discipleship, Wonsuk Ma, Kenneth R. Ross Jan 2013

Mission Spirituality And Authentic Discipleship, Wonsuk Ma, Kenneth R. Ross

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This book argues for the primacy of spirituality in the practice of mission. Since God is the primary agent of mission and God works through the power of the Holy Spirit, it is through openness to the Spirit that mission finds its true character and has its authentic impact. This is demonstrated today particularly by movements of Christian faith in the global south which carry the good news to the heart of communities in every part of the world. Originating in the Edinburgh 2010 mission study project, the essays assembled in this volume show that today there is a renewal …

This study investigated my experience as a facilitator of musical activities at a men’s correctional facility in New Jersey. Over a period of three years, I served as the director of the men’s chorus at Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility in Bordentown, New Jersey. This study focused on my planning, repertoire selection, and rehearsal processes. Data were collected using self-created lesson plans, personal reflections and journal entries, and individual feedback from members of the choir. The results indicated that in order for me to be an effective teacher, I had to work with my students rather than working in …

God's Extended Mind, David P. Hunt Jan 2013

God's Extended Mind, David P. Hunt

Philosophy

God the fully exercised power to know all truths. but why is God’s excellence with respect to knowing not treated on a par with his excellence with respect to doing, where the latter requires only that God have the (exercised or unexercised) power to do all things? The prima facie problem with divine ‘omni-knowledgeability’ – roughly, being able to know whatever one wants to know whenever one wants to know it – is that knowledge (whether occurrent or dispositional) requires an internal representation, whereas mere ‘knowledgeability’ does not. I argue to the contrary that knowledge does not require an internal …

Perils Of The Open Road, David P. Hunt Jan 2013

Perils Of The Open Road, David P. Hunt

Philosophy

Open theists deny that God knows future contingents. Most open theists justify this denial by adopting the position that there are no future contingent truths to be known. In this paper we examine some of the arguments put forward for this position in two recent articles in this journal, one by Dale Tuggy and one by Alan Rhoda, Gregory Boyd, and Thomas Belt. The arguments concern time, modality, and the semantics of ‘will’ statements. We explain why we find none of these arguments persuasive. This wide road leads only to destruction.

Fair Employment, Voting Rights, And Racial Violence (Including Introduction), Timothy N. Thurber

History Publications

Introduction and chapter one from the book, Republicans and Race: The GOP’s Frayed Relationship with African Americans, 1945–1974.

From the author's introduction "I offer a fresh look at the relationship between African Americans and the GOP. This book explores how Republicans at the federal level approached racial policy and politics between 1945 and 1974. Though the struggle for black equality existed before then and continues today, these three decades constitute a distinct era in that battle. African Americans and their allies grew more assertive in challenging the status quo. Some focused on direct action protests, while others primarily lobbied the …

Making Room For The Lost: Congregational Inclusivity In Waldenström’S Squire Adamsson, Mark Safstrom Jan 2013

Making Room For The Lost: Congregational Inclusivity In Waldenström’S Squire Adamsson, Mark Safstrom

Scandinavian Studies: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

In the Scandinavian Lutheran world in the 1800s, and especially among the Pietists, allegory was a mainstay in preaching and reading strategies. For Pietists interested in applying faith to their lives, there was an added subjective intensity to interpreting allegories. It is entirely natural that when debates arose in the 1860s over defining the nature and limits of the congregation, the revival preacher, Paul Peter Waldenström (1838-1917) resorted to writing an allegory. The result was one of the most widely read novels in nineteenth-century Sweden. Waldenström’s novel, Squire Adamsson: Or Where Do You Live?, initially appeared in late 1862 …

Squire Adamsson: Or, Where Do You Live? An Allegorical Tale From The Swedish Awakening, By Paul Peter Waldenström, Mark Safstrom

Scandinavian Studies: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

It is now over 150 years since Squire Adamsson appeared in bookstores and helped to launch its author, P.P. Waldenström, to prominence within the religious revivals that were then sweeping across Scandinavia. The themes of the novel touched on many aspects of Christian life and its challenges, but particularly drew from the theology of one group of dissenters in the Lutheran state church, the so-called “new evangelical” Pietists surrounding Carl Olof Rosenius (1816-1868). There are a variety of themes that can be found in this text, but perhaps none both so provocative and poignant as the unique presentation of congregational …
