On Divided Lines: Instrumentation For Bass Parts In Corelli-Era Sonatas, Peter Walls
On Divided Lines: Instrumentation For Bass Parts In Corelli-Era Sonatas, Peter Walls
Performance Practice Review
There has been considerable debate in recent years about the appropriate treatment of bass lines in Corelli Op. 5 and other duo and ensemble sonatas of the era. This article examines the relationship between continuo parts and separate bass parts in publications that include both. It argues that the case for accepting publication formats as a guide to performance practice is weaker than has often been claimed. The inadequacy of the standard terminology (particularly ‘trio sonata’) for Italian chamber-music ensembles in this period has been much commented on. Italian practice in the 17th century was to designate pieces a 2, …

In Search Of The Eighteenth-Century “Violoncello”: Antonio Vandini And The Concertos For Viola By Tartini, Marc Vanscheeuwijck
Performance Practice Review
In this rarely-quoted excerpt, Johann Philipp Eisel obviously paraphrases Johann Mattheson’s definition of the violoncello in Das Neu-eröffnete Orchestre. It is yet another description that does not conform precisely to our early twenty-first century historical construct of the “baroque” cello. In the past not much attention has been given to such descriptions, considered to be too deviant from the general understanding of what a cello was supposed to be: five or six strings were not considered to represent the “normal” cello, and the viola da spalla was considered a different instrument altogether. However, recent research has finally taken such descriptions …
How One Learned To Ornament In Late Sixteenth-Century Italy, Timothy J. Mcgee
How One Learned To Ornament In Late Sixteenth-Century Italy, Timothy J. Mcgee
Performance Practice Review
Several of the sixteenth-century ornamentation manuals state that they are self-sufficient tutors; that instrumentalists and vocalists could learn the skill without further assistance from a teacher. While this may have been possible for one type of ornamentation, it did not hold true for the newer, dramatic, Neapolitan style of ornamentation that was heavily based on rhetorical models, and which needed careful guidance from an experienced teacher (Author).
Bach's Tempo Ordinario: A Plaine And Easie Introduction To The System, Robert Marshall
Bach's Tempo Ordinario: A Plaine And Easie Introduction To The System, Robert Marshall
Performance Practice Review
The initial impetus for this inquiry came from a question posed by Arthur Mendel during a coffee break in a Bach seminar some thirty years ago. Why, he asked, did Bach notate the last movement of the fifth Brandenburg Concerto in two-four time, with triplets rather than in six-eight time?...
"Attractively Packaged But Unripe Fruit"; The Uk's Commercialization Of Musical History In The 1980s, Colin Lawson
"Attractively Packaged But Unripe Fruit"; The Uk's Commercialization Of Musical History In The 1980s, Colin Lawson
Performance Practice Review
The decade from 1980 proved to be truly significant in the development of historical performance, as recreations of post-Baroque repertory gradually became the norm. At its close, three complete cycles of Beethoven Symphonies had been recorded on “period” instruments, implicitly demonstrating the complexity of the spectrum between practical expediency and historical accuracy. By 1991, Clive Brown was issuing a timely warning that the pedigree of many of the instruments on these recordings was of doubtful authenticity. The commercially-motivated rush to push period-instrument performance ever more rapidly into the nineteenth century did not offer much hope for the consolidation of historical …
A Correctly-Attributed Fake, Bruce Haynes
A Correctly-Attributed Fake, Bruce Haynes
Performance Practice Review
A few years ago, a harpsichord ascribed to Nicholas Lefébure and dated 1755 appeared on the scene. Although it was enthusiastically received, there was a problem with this instrument. It seems its attribution was incorrect; in fact, by some two and a half centuries. Shortly afterwards, its real maker, Martin Skowroneck, published an amusing and sensational article in which he described how he had created an instrument that was so stylistically convincing that harpsichord restorers didn’t hesitate to call it an original...

The Antebellum "Piano Girl" In The American South, Candace Bailey
The Antebellum "Piano Girl" In The American South, Candace Bailey
Performance Practice Review
Throughout the nineteenth century, the education of young gentlewomen almost always included music lessons, with piano lessons being the most frequently recommended. The social context for these young women pianists, “piano girls,” has been described in several modern works, particularly since Arthur Loesser’s seminal work Men, Women, and Pianos: A Social History.1 In the 1980s, Judith Tick made the term “piano girl” a familiar one in musicological studies, and since that time the idea of the piano girl and her role in society has been explored by others.2 Most of these studies describe the social phenomenon of the piano girl, …

Although Western cultures tend to view dolphins as friendly and benevolent, in Japanese fishing communities, "iruka" (dolphins) are often viewed as food or pests. These perspectives have led to intense conflicts between Japanese fishermen and activists from the west. This article presents an exercise that simulates intercultural conflict by asking students to role-play the parts of Japanese fishers or Western filmmakers and, along the way, sheds light on concepts such as ethnocentrism, value differences, and world views.

Imaginary You, Joshua A. Ware
Imaginary You, Joshua A. Ware
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Imaginary You is a multi-genre collection subdivided into three sections: “Impossible Motels,” “Imaginary Portraits,” and “Writing through Nightwood.” One of the manuscript’s main concerns is the exploration of an in-between space formed by the conflation of real and imagined experience. More specifically, the writing puts pressure on Wallace Stevens’ aphorisms, as stated in his Adagia, that “In poetry at least the imagination must not detach itself from reality,” and “The final belief is to believe in a fiction, which you know to be a fiction, there being nothing else. The exquisite truth is to know that it is a …

This study discusses model of measurement to assess the effectiveness of programs of corporate social responsibility (CSR) held by corporation of mines, oil and gas, and geothermal in relation with poverty alleviation within the surrounding communities. The case study is conducted in a geothermal company in West Java. Results of study indicate that measurements of CSR should be developed in accordance with the scale of program, and should as well make use micro indicators which are relevant with elements of poverty. Also, the assessment should mainly be focused to the target group of beneficiaries. The role of corporation can be …

Dinamika Elite Lokal Madura, M. Imam Zamroni
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The priyayi played a vital role in leading the Indonesian community during the colonial era. The same applies to Madura society. During the colonial era, power wielded by the priyayi was constricted on the basis of Madura culture and was strengthened by the bureaucratic power structure at both the village and district/ city level. This was manifested in such ways as serving as a klébun or bupati. However, the pattern of priyayi power, which was underpinned by feudalism waned, being replaced by Islamic religious leaders known as kiai. During the New Order regime, kiai in Madura played a very dominant …

A Face To Meet The Faces: An Anthology Of Contemporary Persona Poetry, Stacey Lynn Brown, Oliver De La Paz
A Face To Meet The Faces: An Anthology Of Contemporary Persona Poetry, Stacey Lynn Brown, Oliver De La Paz
University of Akron Press Publications
The literary tradition of persona, of writing poems in voices or from perspectives other than the poet’s own, is ancient in origin and contemporary in practice. The embodiment of different voices is not only a dramatic and creative moment, but also a moment of true empathy, as the author moves beyond his or her own margins to fully inhabit the character, personality, and mindset of another human being. While there are a great number of poems written in persona, both historically as well as in the modern poetic landscape, there are no anthologies currently in existence that collect and celebrate …
Transgender Transitions: Sex/Gender Binaries In The Digital Age, Kay Siebler
Transgender Transitions: Sex/Gender Binaries In The Digital Age, Kay Siebler
English Faculty Publications
Contemporary representations of transgendered people often reinforce rigid gender binaries of masculinity and femininity, leading transgendered individuals to feel they must seek out hormones or surgery to “correctly align” their bodies with their gender. Cultural texts (e.g., films, television, Internet, digital texts) reinforce this “pre-op or post-op” ideology for trans identity. The pre-op or post-op MTF or FTM binary mandates an alignment with the heterosexual gender system (feminine female or masculine male). In this article, the author focuses on trans identities and how representations codify the need or desire for surgery and hormones and examines the paradoxical reification of gender …
