Burke, Rhetoric And The Doctor: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Doctor Who, Kemp Nishan Muñiz Apr 2012

Burke, Rhetoric And The Doctor: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Doctor Who, Kemp Nishan Muñiz

All Student Theses and Dissertations

This paper performs a rhetorical analysis of the science-fiction program, Doctor Who, using theories from Kenneth Burke. Series Five of the show is analyzed using Burke’s theory of identification, the representative anecdote and the dramatistic pentad. The analysis with identification theory exemplifies the show’s ability to create identification with the audience that, in turn, drives the audience to watch. While the identification connects the audience to the show, the pentad explains how the characters of the show are driven by a pursuit of idealistic humanism rooted in individuality. The final analysis demonstrates that the program embraces more of a representative …

Face Value, Rebecca Moffett-Moore Apr 2012

Face Value, Rebecca Moffett-Moore

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The human face is the most universally important focus of communication. It is a significant source of identity and the most expressive means of nonverbal communication. We use our faces to speak and express emotions. We use faces to recognize friends or foes; to spot family resemblances; and to consider attractiveness or unattractiveness. Gleaned from a number dictionaries, my interpretation of what is meant by taking something or someone at "face value" means to accept that idea, object, or person because of the way it first looks or seems, without thinking about what else it could mean, and to accept …

The Cultural Consciousness Of John Updike: Rhetorical Spaces As Representations Of Americana Through The “Rabbit” Series, Michael Bonifacio Apr 2012

The Cultural Consciousness Of John Updike: Rhetorical Spaces As Representations Of Americana Through The “Rabbit” Series, Michael Bonifacio

All Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a scholarly examination of John Updike’s first two novels of the Rabbit saga: Rabbit, Run and Rabbit Redux. The discussion is centered on the cultural artifacts and geographic spaces that populate the novels and how they are a reflection of popular cultural and contemporary sociological, economic, and political climates. These items are also closely considered with respect to their rhetorical significance and how Updike makes use of rhetorical spaces to influence his readers. What may seem like ordinary places are, through Updike’s writing, imbued with rhetorical significance that sheds light on his contemporary culture and that of …

Redefining The Gothic: How The Works Of Carson Mccullers, Tennessee Williams & Flannery O'Connor Retained Gothic Roots And Shaped The Southern Gothic, Sarah N. Koehler Apr 2012

Redefining The Gothic: How The Works Of Carson Mccullers, Tennessee Williams & Flannery O'Connor Retained Gothic Roots And Shaped The Southern Gothic, Sarah N. Koehler

All Student Theses and Dissertations

My aim in this thesis is to explore the commonalities between Carson McCullers, Tennessee Williams and Flannery O’Connor, particularly in terms of three main themes: isolation, the pervasion of American normalcy and gender roles. While each of these authors clearly inserts some autobiographical information into his or her characters, the real commonalities between the fictional characters can be found in their inability to fit into a traditional society; the characters in all three authors’ works are outcasts, pushed to the fringes of their communities or their families because of who they are. Sometimes these characters’ desire to be different is …

The Significance Of Silence: The Muted Voices Of Count Fosco And Laura Fairlie In The Woman In White, Melanie Page Apr 2012

The Significance Of Silence: The Muted Voices Of Count Fosco And Laura Fairlie In The Woman In White, Melanie Page

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the intricacies of voice using narrative theory and reader-response theory with Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White. Since Collins first wrote this epistolary novel serially, he wrote aware of his audience as he printed segments with different narrators. This novel allowed Collins the opportunity to reveal an internal set of narrators' responses to other characters' voices--responses that sometimes conflict with and modify one another. At the same time, Collins' contemporary audience's responses to the novel reveal the role of characters' voices in shaping reactions of members of the novel's reading public. Two opposing figures--Laura Fairlie and Count …

And Then, He Folds His Patterned Rug: Repressive Reality And The Eternal Soul In Vladimir Nabokov, Elizabeth Cook Apr 2012

And Then, He Folds His Patterned Rug: Repressive Reality And The Eternal Soul In Vladimir Nabokov, Elizabeth Cook

Masters Theses

While Vladimir Nabokov has deservedly earned fame as a stylist of the strange, most critics who study his novels approach his absurd and beautiful characters as little more than fractured victims of a wholly subjective reality. Compounding the misunderstanding is the tired debate over whether or not Lolita is literary, pornographic, or some cruel game of cat-and-mouse in which Nabokov seizes control of his readers' sense of morality. However, critics who read Nabokov as nothing more than a manipulative stylist neglect to realize that his characters suffer such absurd distortions of spirit and mind because their environment--the "average" reality of …

Finishing Well: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Spiritual Transformation In Retirement-Age Evangelical Men, Johnny Justin Baker Apr 2012

Finishing Well: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Spiritual Transformation In Retirement-Age Evangelical Men, Johnny Justin Baker

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The baby boomers comprise a large segment of the United States population (78 million) but many of them are without spiritual resources to finish well in life. However, there are a few Evangelical men who have experienced spiritual transformation in retirement-age and have discovered the resources for security and significance in the spiritual dimension. Through a qualitative research design the stories of eight participants gave richness and depth to this study. These men described how they and others were impacted by the transformation experience. They discarded superficial forms of cultural Christianity to embrace authentic intrinsic change. The spiritual transformation experience, …

Mormons And The Grand Army Of The Republic, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D. Apr 2012

Mormons And The Grand Army Of The Republic, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Civil War veterans, like most military veterans, enjoyed continued association following the war. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) veterans’ organization was established in 1866 and grew to be a large and politically powerful organization. This chapter by Kenneth L. Alford provides an overview of the GAR’s history in Utah with an emphasis on relations between Latter-day Saints and the GAR.

South Africa, Multilateralism And The Global Politics Of Development, Eduard Jordaan Apr 2012

South Africa, Multilateralism And The Global Politics Of Development, Eduard Jordaan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

South Africa was recently included as a member of the BRICS grouping. South Africa's formal association with the powerful original members suggests that it possesses some international clout. Although South Africa pursues an active foreign policy, for example, as a region organizer, notably through New Partnership for Africa's Development, and as an issue leader championing development-related concerns, the normative direction of South Africa's international involvement has been unclear and often contradictory. This article illustrates how South Africa adheres to and departs from liberal principles when involved in the global politics of development. Middlepowership and domestic politics are identified as two …

There's A Reason One Thing Always Leads To Something More, Tara Shea Burke Apr 2012

There's A Reason One Thing Always Leads To Something More, Tara Shea Burke

English Theses & Dissertations

There's a Reason One Thing Always Leads io Something More is a collection of poems that explore ideas of hunger from my own personal understanding of its metaphors as a white, American, feminist woman. This theme of desire branches out to show the body's dance with addiction, want and need, indulgence, and consumption, at odds with the need for limitations, portions, control, boundary, and responsibility to the self and community. The poems radiate from the body and attempt to speak from its collection of interconnected organs, and then use these images and metaphors to address social concerns, gender, sexuality, Americanism, …

Yearn, Jennifer Lynn Graham Apr 2012

Yearn, Jennifer Lynn Graham

English Theses & Dissertations

Yearn is a collection of poems that contains mythical elements, many of which surround the fall from innocence. Often this fall is due to an unfulfilling relationship with a mother figure. Despite such trials, the author also includes dream poems, which show that through endurance, forgiveness, and unconditional love, one can rise back up to purity again.

The Forgotten Sixty-Ninth: The Sixty-Ninth New York National Guard Artillery Regiment In The American Civil War, Christopher M. Garcia Apr 2012

The Forgotten Sixty-Ninth: The Sixty-Ninth New York National Guard Artillery Regiment In The American Civil War, Christopher M. Garcia

History Theses & Dissertations

In Civil War historiography, consistent attention and public interest has illuminated the history of various Irish organizations, no regiment more so than New York's famed "Fighting Sixty-Ninth." During the conflict, the State of New York fielded three regiments designated the Sixty-Ninth, but the scholarship has tended to favor just one of them, the 69'" New York Volunteers of the Irish Brigade. The 69" New York National Guard Artillery, the first regiment in General Michael Corcoran's Irish Legion, has been virtually forgotten. This regiment was, in essence, the standing 69ia New York Militia in federal service for three years or the …

A World For Wanters, Andrew Leask Ortiz Apr 2012

A World For Wanters, Andrew Leask Ortiz

English Theses & Dissertations

The six stories collected in A World for Wanters deal primarily with loneliness and isolation, usually that which accompanies a sudden or traumatic life change, as well as the identity crises that arise when an individual's sense of his place in society is disrupted. Each of these stories, narrated in the first person by a young male protagonist, explores the struggle to reconcile a worldview in which alienation is ordinary and unavoidable with the desire to love and be loved by others.

The Stories Teeth Can Tell, Emily Lindsey Bonner Apr 2012

The Stories Teeth Can Tell, Emily Lindsey Bonner

English Theses & Dissertations

This collection explores the idea of familiarizing the strange, reacquainting oneself with wonder, and how the use of humor can create evocative poetry. The collection aims to use humor as a mechanism to deal with subject matter such as family relationships, loneliness, alienation and death. Linear and circular narrative were used to create poems that act as smaller stories that come together to create a timeline of stories arranged from birth, to mid-life, to death.

My Friend Glenn, Travis A. Everett Apr 2012

My Friend Glenn, Travis A. Everett

English Theses & Dissertations

My Friend Glenn explores the potential of poetry-as-activism by enacting a poetic discourse between the author and a programmatic simulacrum of Glenn Beck. These paired poems interrogate the role news media play in contemporary political, racial, sexual, religious, and economic discourses.

The Perceptions Of Standardized Tests, Academic Self-Efficacy, And Academic Performance Of African American Graduate Students: A Correlational And Comparative Analysis, Arleezah K. Marrah Apr 2012

The Perceptions Of Standardized Tests, Academic Self-Efficacy, And Academic Performance Of African American Graduate Students: A Correlational And Comparative Analysis, Arleezah K. Marrah

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

The academic performance of African American students continues to be a concern for educators, researchers, and most importantly their community. This issue is particularly prevalent in the standardized test scores of African American students where they score on average one or more standard deviations below their Caucasian and Asian American counterparts, which may hinder their college enrollment, academic achievement, and educational attainment (Diaz, 1999; Walpole et al., 2005). This issue has been examined by numerous studies and many researchers have attributed their underachievement to factors such as lower academic self-efficacy, stereotype threat, cultural test bias, and institutionalized racism (Kellow & …

Benefit Road: Short Stories, Kathleen J. Stowe Apr 2012

Benefit Road: Short Stories, Kathleen J. Stowe

English Theses & Dissertations

Benefit Road is a work of realistic fiction composed of six short stories. Each protagonist is an individual in contemporary society, living an isolated existence, while struggling to connect with others and construct moral order out of chaos. A blind disabled child attended by his uncomplaining mother, geckos scrambling up a freshly painted wall to escape from a cat, a drowning boy, the revelry of a Fasching celebration, a toddler in a crib shrieking for his mother's attention, and an old dog on a wintry trail: A common thread linking these particular stories is the presence of an animal as …

The Effects Of Digital Technology On Basic Writing, Leslie Denise Norris Apr 2012

The Effects Of Digital Technology On Basic Writing, Leslie Denise Norris

English Theses & Dissertations

At this study's research site—a small, Virginia community college—faculty, staff and students use digital technology to share information daily, which could cause a problem for some students: students may need digital literacy instruction before the college requires those courses. Another potential problem is that scholars (Stephens, Houser, and Cowan) indicate that some instructors across the academy treat students negatively if students do not demonstrate digital, rhetorical dexterity when communicating—particular digital skills that some students lack.

For this study, I surveyed basic writing (BW) instructors and students at the research site to learn more about their digital experiences. The surveys yielded …

Gender Performativity In The Community College: A Case Study Of Female Backline Classified Staff, Samantha Rose Powers Apr 2012

Gender Performativity In The Community College: A Case Study Of Female Backline Classified Staff, Samantha Rose Powers

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This case study explored the gendered performances of five female backline classified staff members who work in non-traditional fields within a community college. More specifically, this study defined gendered behaviors at a community college, and explored how these behaviors have affected the identities of women working in non-traditional fields at the community college. This study indicated through documents, observations, and interviews that there was mixed evidence of the degree to which gendered behavior is cultivated at a community college in Washington. Document review, interview, and observation findings showed that women at the community college reported expectations of gendered behavior, gender …
