Ontological Subordination In Novatian Of Rome's Theology Of The Son, Daniel Lloyd Apr 2012

Ontological Subordination In Novatian Of Rome's Theology Of The Son, Daniel Lloyd

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation evaluates Novatian of Rome's theology of the Son in his De Trinitate. It argues that Novatian presents the Son as ontologically subordinate to the Father, which is not a conclusion shared by a majority of recent scholars. This conclusion is reached by comparing Novatian's presentation of the Father's divinity with that of the Son. The first half of this work, therefore, demonstrates the manner by which Novatian affirms that the Father is transcendent, supreme, and unique in His attributes. Novatian employs a range of concepts and terms found in Christian and non-Christian sources. Specifically, I present and analyze …

The Christology Of Theodoret Of Cyrrhus: The Question Of Its Development, Vasilije Vranic Apr 2012

The Christology Of Theodoret Of Cyrrhus: The Question Of Its Development, Vasilije Vranic

Dissertations (1934 -)

The Christological opus of Theodoret of Cyrrhus remains somewhat controversial due to his involvement in the Nestorian and Monophysite controversies as the champion of the Antiochene milieu. Although the recent scholarship is increasingly benevolent in the considerations of his Christology, still certain doubts are present about the constancy of his teaching. In this dissertation, I argue that the Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus remains consistent and unchanged throughout his life. The analysis of both his early and mature Christological output, as evidenced in the Expositio rectae fidei and the Eranistes, shows that the main theological concepts and terminology remain unaffected …

Andrew G. Grutka, First Bishop Of The Diocese Of Gary, Indiana (1957 To 1984): "Where There Is Charity, There Is God.", Anthony Bonta Apr 2012

Andrew G. Grutka, First Bishop Of The Diocese Of Gary, Indiana (1957 To 1984): "Where There Is Charity, There Is God.", Anthony Bonta

Dissertations (1934 -)

Andrew G. Grutka (1908 to 1993), son of Slovak immigrants, grew up in a working-class, immigrant neighborhood in Joliet, Illinois. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1933 and was consecrated the first Bishop of the Diocese of Gary, Indiana in 1957. His impact was felt locally, nationally, and internationally. He crossed interreligious, interracial and civic boundaries to address religious, social and civic affairs that anticipated many themes of the Second Vatican Council, including racial justice and charity, yet very little is written about him in the histories of American religious life and thought. …

Lonergan On The Historical Causality Of Christ: An Interpretation Of 'The Redemption: A Supplement To De Verbo Incarnato', John Volk Apr 2012

Lonergan On The Historical Causality Of Christ: An Interpretation Of 'The Redemption: A Supplement To De Verbo Incarnato', John Volk

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1958, the Canadian Jesuit theologian Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984) completed a draft of a major text on redemption. He stated that the text was to be an addition to his book De Verbo Incarnato, with the purpose of explaining the historical causality of Christ. The Lonergan Research Institute, Toronto, has produced a preliminary English translation titled The Redemption: A Supplement to De Verbo Incarnato. To date, there has been no interpretation of this text. This dissertation aims at making a contribution towards the remedy of this lacuna in Lonergan studies. The dissertation interprets Lonergan's understanding of the historical causality of …

The Concept Of Personhood In The Phenomenology Of Edmund Husserl, Colin J. Hahn Apr 2012

The Concept Of Personhood In The Phenomenology Of Edmund Husserl, Colin J. Hahn

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation attempts to articulate the concept of personhood in Husserl. In his research manuscripts, Husserl recognized the need for a concrete description of subjectivity that still remained within the transcendental register. The concept of personhood, although never fully worked out, is intended to provide this description by demonstrating how the embodied, enworlded, intersubjective, and axiological dimensions of experience are integrated.

After briefly outlining the characteristics of a transcendental phenomenological account of personhood, this dissertation outlines the essential structures of personhood. The person, for Husserl, includes the passive dimension with the instinctive and affective dimensions of subjectivity, which become sedimented …

Theo-Poetics: Figure And Metaphysics In The Thought Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Anne Carpenter Apr 2012

Theo-Poetics: Figure And Metaphysics In The Thought Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Anne Carpenter

Dissertations (1934 -)

Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) was a Swiss-Catholic theologian of great importance in the twentieth century. His formal education included a doctorate in literature, which resulted in a massive, three-volume work on the state of German literature and philosophy entitled Der Apokalypse der deutschen Seele (The Apocalypse of the German Soul) - and licentiates in both theology and philosophy. Throughout his life, von Balthasar continued to display a thoroughgoing interest in art and theology. With a background particularly attuned to this link, von Balthasar set out to "recover" the transcendental of beauty in theology, which he argued had been a …

Irish-American Identity, Memory, And Americanism During The Eras Of The Civil War And First World War, John French Apr 2012

Irish-American Identity, Memory, And Americanism During The Eras Of The Civil War And First World War, John French

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation connects the well-documented history of the repression of wartime dissent in the United States with the complex relationship between Americans and immigrants. The study focuses specifically on Irish-American efforts to insulate themselves from accusations of unpatriotic and un-American attitudes and behaviors by highlighting their uniquely American contributions and principles. The Civil War and First World War eras provide ideal time frames for such an evaluation. Marked by xenophobia and institutionalized nativism, each era found many Americans and government officials accusing the American Irish of disloyalty because of their opposition to the prosecution of the war. In order to …

Introducing The Incomparable Hildegarde: The Sexuality, Style, And Image Of A Forgotten Cultural Icon, Monica Gallamore Apr 2012

Introducing The Incomparable Hildegarde: The Sexuality, Style, And Image Of A Forgotten Cultural Icon, Monica Gallamore

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study is an historical biography of the popular American entertainer from the nineteen-forties and fifties named Hildegarde. Known by her first name long before such designations became commonplace, Hildegarde achieved such celebrity status that she influenced women's fashions and promoted a number of consumer products. She even had her own signature Revlon lipstick and nail polish called "Hildegarde Rose." Hildegarde's career spanned for more than seventy years, beginning as a pianist for silent movies in Milwaukee and eventually becoming the darling of nightclubs and supper clubs. Unfortunately, few people remember this entertainer or her influence. She has been overlooked …

Gender Politics In The Novels Of Eliza Haywood, Susan Muse Apr 2012

Gender Politics In The Novels Of Eliza Haywood, Susan Muse

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study investigates how Eliza Haywood addressed ideological conflicts about gender produced by modernization in early eighteenth-century England. Expanding Michael McKeon's theory of the novel to include "questions of gender," I address a wide sample of novels in order to show how Haywood's writing developed during her long career. Her first preoccupation was the sexual double standard that defined "fallen women" as society's exiles. Influenced by the "she-tragedy" of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, Haywood wrote novels that elicited pity for fallen women and searched for reasons to explain their condition. Haywood's writing became overtly political with her …

Love And Lonergan's Cognitional-Intentional Anthropology: An Inquiry On The Question Of A "Fifth Level Of Consciousness", Jeremy Blackwood Apr 2012

Love And Lonergan's Cognitional-Intentional Anthropology: An Inquiry On The Question Of A "Fifth Level Of Consciousness", Jeremy Blackwood

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses a controversial question among those who study the work of Bernard J.F. Lonergan, SJ (1904-1984): To what extent and with what intent did Lonergan affirm a fifth level of consciousness? He used the spatial image of "levels of consciousness" to express the relations among key operations of the conscious human subject, and the image remains common currency for those familiar with his work. However, the precise number of levels shifted and developed throughout Lonergan's career, beginning with three, moving to four, and finally including some mention of a fifth. As the level of love, this fifth level …

Pamela: Or, Virtue Reworded: The Texts, Paratexts, And Revisions That Redefine Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Jarrod Hurlbert Apr 2012

Pamela: Or, Virtue Reworded: The Texts, Paratexts, And Revisions That Redefine Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Jarrod Hurlbert

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation is a study of the revisions Samuel Richardson made to his first novel, Pamela, and its sequel, Pamela in Her Exalted Condition, published within his lifetime. Richardson, who was his own printer, revised Pamela eight times over twenty years, the sequel three times, and the majority of the variants have hitherto suffered from critical neglect. Because it is well known that Richardson responded to friendly and antagonistic "collaborators" by making emendations, I also examine the extant documents that played a role in Pamela's development, including Richardson's correspondence and contemporary criticisms of the novel. Pamela Reworded, then, is an …

Opening First-World Catholic Theology To Third-World Ecofeminism: Aruna Gnanadason And Johann B. Metz In Dialogue, Gretchen Baumgardt Apr 2012

Opening First-World Catholic Theology To Third-World Ecofeminism: Aruna Gnanadason And Johann B. Metz In Dialogue, Gretchen Baumgardt

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation responds to the dearth of scholarship in first-world, Catholic theology, particularly in the United States, that adequately and actively engages theologies of third-world women who highlight the disproportionate effects of environmental degradation on women, humanity's interconnectedness with all creation, and the spiritualities of third-world women that shape their relationship to and care for the earth. I contend that greater intentional dialogue with these theologians, particularly third-world, Christian ecofeminist theologians, could expand first-world, Catholic theology's appropriation of ecofeminism, develop a more comprehensive understanding of the disproportionate effects of environmental degradation on women, especially in the third world, and deepen …

The Election Controversy Among Lutherans In The Twentieth Century: An Examination Of The Underlying Problems, John M. Brenner Apr 2012

The Election Controversy Among Lutherans In The Twentieth Century: An Examination Of The Underlying Problems, John M. Brenner

Dissertations (1934 -)

The Election Controversy of the nineteenth re-shaped the face of confessional Lutheranism in America. The Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America, the leading voice of confessional Lutheranism in America, bore the brunt of the dispute and ultimately dissolved. This dissertation examines the Election Controversy with special attention to the twentieth century attempts to resolve it in order to discover the underlying problems that have prevented the opposing sides from reaching a resolution. The dissertation is written from the viewpoint of the Wisconsin Synod, one of the synods involved in the controversy but often ignored in the discussion of it. …
