The Politics Of H-1b Visa Limits, Fang Fang
The Politics Of H-1b Visa Limits, Fang Fang
Political Science Theses and Capstones
In recent years, the number of H-1B Visa (Temporary Work Visa) issued has increased tremendously. Various lobbying groups are devoted to persuading Congress to revise immigration laws and to increase the work visa issuance cap. The purpose of my study is to find out the how the H-1B Visa policy is effected by analyzing the lobbying expenditures of different economic sectors. Although there are abundant studies on the factors that affect immigration policies, there are few studies that concentrate specifically on the H-1B Visa. I combined campaign finance data and annual work visa data to assess the relationship between lobbying …
Unemployed Veterans During A Recession: Factors Affecting The Completion Rate Of The Vocational Rehabilitation And Employment Program, Chris Witt
Political Science Theses and Capstones
The purpose of my research is to determine what factors affect the outcome of the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program. Previous literature examines individuals from each state in various stages of the program to determine which factors cause their individual outcome. Although previous research covered a broad spectrum of factors there still remains a lack of significant evidence to determine the observed outcome. I added state expenditures to the previous data to attempt to determine whether or not there is a correlation between funding and the completion of the program. I used the Department of Veteran Affairs 2007 Veterans Employability …
The Effects Of Tribal Governments On Reservation Poverty Rates, Heather Raisch
The Effects Of Tribal Governments On Reservation Poverty Rates, Heather Raisch
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Poverty rates on Indian reservations are far higher than the national average. Since Tribal Governments have at least some control over these reservations, to what extent are they to blame for these higher than average poverty rates? I look at each reservation and their type of government, constitution, policies and demographics to analyze the causes of their poverty as it relates to tribal government. There are many other pieces of research that are similar to this, but none looking specifically at the overall effects the government has on its community. My hypothesis is that communities with higher poverty rates tend …
Genesis 31-34 As Spanish Comedia: Lope De Vega’S El Robo De Dina, Matthew D. Stroud
Genesis 31-34 As Spanish Comedia: Lope De Vega’S El Robo De Dina, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Lope de Vega’s El robo de Dina, based upon Genesis 31-34, focuses on the disturbing series of events involving Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, and culminating in the mass slaughter of an entire enemy people who were doing their best to accommodate the demands of the Hebrews. The primary focus of this article is not the Biblical story itself, but rather the techniques that Lope used to adapt his source text for a comedia audience. From the amplification of the scope of the source text by the inclusion of the story of Laban and Jacob to the depiction of women as …
Faithful Remembering: Constructing Dutch America In The Twentieth Century, David E. Zwart
Faithful Remembering: Constructing Dutch America In The Twentieth Century, David E. Zwart
Dissertations
The people of the Dutch-American community constructed and maintained a strong ethnoreligion identity in the twentieth despite pressures to join the mainstream of the United States. A strong institutional completeness of congregations and schools resulted from and contributed to this identity. The people in these institutions created a shared identity by demanding the loyalty of members as well as constructing narratives that convinced people of the need for the ethnoreligious institutions.
The narratives of the Dutch-American community reflected and reinforced a shared identity, which relied on a collective memory. The framing, maintaining, altering, and remodeling of the collective memory from …

La Comercialización Del Turismo Étnico En Guatemala Y Marruecos, Michelle Diana Gloster
La Comercialización Del Turismo Étnico En Guatemala Y Marruecos, Michelle Diana Gloster
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines the commercialization of ethnic tourism in Guatemala and Morocco in a postcolonial world. Addressing notions of authenticity, Western expectations of the ethnic tourism experience, and colonial portrayals of the Mayas and the Berbers, the thesis argues that the Guatemalan and Moroccan governments reduce their indigenous populations to ‘authentic’ living museums in their touristic promotions targeting Western tourists. Catering to Western tourists’ expectations, the Guatemalan and Moroccan governments perpetuate the stereotypes of their indigenous populations that were established during colonialism. Despite Guatemalan and Moroccan cultural repression of the Maya and the Berber populations, respectively, the governments exploit their …
Illuminating The Infelice: Defiance And Transcendence In The 19th Century Operatic Madwoman, Claire Biringer
Illuminating The Infelice: Defiance And Transcendence In The 19th Century Operatic Madwoman, Claire Biringer
Music Honors Projects
The female protagonist’s mad scene, since coming into true vogue in the early nineteenth-century Italian opera tradition, has been prized for its dramatic and poignant emotive qualities. This project explores four nineteenth-century mad scenes; Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), Bellini’s I Puritani (1835), Meyerbeer’s Dinorah (1859), and Verdi’s Macbeth (1847), surveying the literature of each scene and providing formal analysis of musical attributes such as harmony, melodic structure, and formal design, all in comparison to generic operatic conventions. Musical elements generally associated with the operatic madwoman include the orchestral recollection of significant past themes, virtuosic coloratura lines, and the presence …

The Long Road: An Analysis Of The 1557 Book Of Mirrors By Seydi Ali Reis, Julian N. Weiss
Student Publications
In 1552, Piri Reis was relieved from the Admiralty of the Ottoman Imperial Navy. Seydi Ali Reis was appointed to replace him and his assignment was to return fifteen galleys from Basra to Egypt. This should have been a relatively short journey. Seydi failed miserably, however. He lost most of the ships in battle with the Portuguese and bad weather, which he documents in his travelogue The Mirror of Countries. With nowhere left to turn, he sold the remaining ships in Surat on the west coast of India. To make matters worse, he took the long road home to Istanbul: …

Publications and Research
An important feature of the Brooklyn College Library is its art collection, the college’s only permanent art collection. In this article, we explain how the library came to have an art collection; how we supplemented the collection with museum-style wall labels, an online catalog, and an audio tour; and how we promoted the collection and sparked student creativity with an annual art contest. We pay particular attention to the decisions and details that might help other libraries working on similar projects.

"I'M Tellin' Because It's Mine And I Can": Digital Storytelling Projects In Two Different Elementary Age Communities, Hilary Hamilton , '12
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Digital storytelling, a project designed to build communities and develop multiliterate community members, has been reserved almost exclusively for adults. This practitioner research project challenges this practice by bringing the project to two groups of elementary school students under the assumption that students from diverse backgrounds would be able engage productively with the medium. While running these two workshops over the summer, a pre-service teacher collected data on her students’ experiences using ethnographic methods. This study looks at how these students engage with digital storytelling, what stories they decide to tell, and how they give and receive feedback. Ultimately, this …

With This Ring, I Surrender: Politics, Religion, And Marriage In Shakespeare And Tudor England, Mara R. Berkoff
Honors College Theses
The ideas I wish to explore are the overarching themes of politics, religion, and marriage in the Turor period under the rule of King Henry VIII from 1509 to 1547. The popular opinion of the period on Henry VIII's behavior can be seen in William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure, and Henry VIII.
Sonnet 29, Matthew Carlson
Sonnet 29, Matthew Carlson

"Sonnet 29" is an a capella choral piece written for the Gettysburg College Choir in the Spring of 2012. Dr. Robert Natter, director of the College choir, asked me if I would like to write a piece with text of Shakespeare, as he was planning to program a concert that consisted entirely of Shakespearean text. I chose this particular sonnet because it has a great metaphor of transformation which lends itself well to being set to music. In the first half of the piece, the speaker is in utter despair, and I bring this out with clustered harmonies, quiet dynamics, …
Judy Chicago: Visions For Feminist Art, Francesca Debiaso
Judy Chicago: Visions For Feminist Art, Francesca Debiaso
Student Publications
Controversy, awe, and revelation distinguish Judy Chicago's now 40 year career in the art world. Chicago's large body of work is inseparable from her ideologies pertaining to women's crippling exclusion from male dominated disciplines within art, history, and society overall. Her work is characterized by a desire to establish feminine iconography ("central-core imagery") and create a feminist lexicon applicable to the arts as to validate and celebrate women's experience. Viewing her artwork as a tool for social change and dialogue, Chicago has incorporated collaboration and consciousness-raising into her art making process. Thus, her collaborators gain not only the participation of …

Prodigal Sons And Daughters: Unitarianism In Philadelphia, 1796 -1846, Charlotte Gaw , '12
Prodigal Sons And Daughters: Unitarianism In Philadelphia, 1796 -1846, Charlotte Gaw , '12
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this paper, Gaw examines the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia and the role that its version of “heterodox” or “liberal” Christianity played within the broader developments of American religion during the antebellum period. Rather than analyzing the Church in isolation, Gaw argues for a broader investigative lens that appreciates the influences of America’s developing religious, social, and political ideals on the Church’s own development, including growing evangelical sentiments and an influx of Hicksite Quaker members into the Church after the Hicksite Schism. Gaw uses a variety of letters, sermon transcripts, and secondary scholarly accounts to argue that Philadelphia’s Unitarians …
Spirit And Flesh: On The Significance Of The Reformed Doctrine Of The Lord's Supper For Pneumatology, Christopher Ganski
Spirit And Flesh: On The Significance Of The Reformed Doctrine Of The Lord's Supper For Pneumatology, Christopher Ganski
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation explores the pneumatological significance of the Reformed doctrine of the Lord's Supper. Confessional Reformed teaching is distinguished from Lutheran and Roman Catholic accounts of eucharistic presence by claiming that it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that believers are made to participate in the flesh and blood of Christ. The Spirit is not a mere proxy presence of Christ, but mediates to us in the eucharistic celebration the presence of the whole Christ. This position, I argue, reflects the pneumatological orientation of Reformed Christology and points to an understanding of the Holy Spirit as the reality …
Destabilizing Tradition: Gender, Sexuality, And Postnational Identity In Four Novels By Irish Women, 1960-2000, Sarah Nestor
Destabilizing Tradition: Gender, Sexuality, And Postnational Identity In Four Novels By Irish Women, 1960-2000, Sarah Nestor
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation examines four novels that represent Irish women and girls confronting the typical narrative of Irish national identity in the twentieth century. The post-independence construction of Irish national identity depended upon prescriptive roles that aligned with its founders’ beliefs about the nation’s ethnic homogeneity and moral superiority. Irish women’s identity and roles as wives and mothers were imperative to upholding this idea of the nation, particularly its morality. Irish women were therefore charged with maintaining well-defined gender roles and the nuclear family in an effort to define a distinctive Irish identity. Thus, when women’s roles are challenged or changed …
From Cleansed Lepers To Cleansed Hearts: The Developing Meaning Of Katharizo In Luke-Acts, Pamela Shellberg
From Cleansed Lepers To Cleansed Hearts: The Developing Meaning Of Katharizo In Luke-Acts, Pamela Shellberg
Dissertations (1934 -)
Luke develops the theme of God’s salvation prominently and fully in the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles to mean the deliverance from danger, disease, and death, experienced physically and religiously. Isaiah’s oracles announcing the inauguration of a new era of God’s favor and a salvation reaching to the ends of the earth shape Luke’s vision; their images and vocabulary permeate his thought. For Luke, “cleansing” is a means by which God extends this salvation, and Luke therefore uses cleansing language, in forms of the word katharizō, to mark three specific manifestations of salvation in his accounts of …
