A History Of Violence: Thomas Hart Benton And The Impact Of Dueling In The Politics Of The Old Southwest, Kaleb Cox
History Undergraduate Honors Theses
On September 27, 1817, Thomas Hart Benton, a young St. Louis attorney and an aspiring politician, killed a fellow gentleman lawyer in their second duel together, prompting a significant amount of controversy within the community. While much of the St. Louis press attacked Benton for his part in the bloody feud, threatening his political career, three years later the Missouri General Assembly elected him as one of the state’s first two U.S. Senators. He would go on to become one of the most prominent figures in the national Democratic Party and antebellum politics. This essay will explore his political ascendency …

The Efficacy Of An Audio Program And Discussion Guide In Promoting Exclusive Breastfeeding In Cameroon, Africa, Kathryn R. Reinsma
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: In the Northwest Region of Cameroon, approximately 90% of women initiate breastfeeding; however, only 34% continue exclusive breastfeeding for the recommended six months (Kakute, et al., 2005; WHO, 2008). Entertainment-education is a mass-media communication strategy of placing educational information into media such as television programs, movies, and radio programs (Siegel & Lotenberg, 2007). This form of behavioral change communication has proven effective in addressing health-related issues in developing countries.
Purpose: The aim was to design an audio program and discussion guide to test the hypothesis that an audio program and discussion guide improves exclusive breastfeeding knowledge, beliefs, benefits, self-efficacy, …

Leyendo Al Incoherente Jules Lévy, Victor Lope Salvador
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Disyuntivas De La Vanguardia Hispanoamericana En Las Revistas De Vicente Huidobro, Antonio Guijarro-Donadíos
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Desiderata, Max Ehrmann '94
A Midwestern Review: A Magazine of the Arts and Issues at DePauw University
Largely unknown in Ehrmann’s lifetime, the poem was compiled by Frederick Kates, rector of Saint Paul’s Church in Baltimore, MD in 1959 as part of a devotional poetry collection. The Church’s name and founding year were inscribed on the collection: “Old Saint Paul’s Church, Baltimore A.D. 1692.” This date was mistakenly attributed to the poem itself, leading scholars to believe that rector Kates had found this 17th century poem that Ehrmann had taken credit for. This conspiracy theory died out, but the mark remains popular as a devotional poem. Les Crane’s spoken-word recording of the poem reached #8 on the …

The Unbought Grace Of Life: Chivalry In Western Literature, Richard N. Boggs
The Unbought Grace Of Life: Chivalry In Western Literature, Richard N. Boggs
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
The code of chivalry has a rich literary history. From the violence and misogyny of pre-chivalric ancient Greece and Rome, the chivalric code was constructed in a deliberate effort to curb and improve the most violent aspects of male behavior. The chivalric male ideal was built upon the tripartite foundation of the ancient archaic virtues, the gallantry of Germanic barbarians, and the Christian beatitudes. Chivalry sought a male ideal which brought raw strength and power under the concept of legitimate authority. By casting the literary male ideal – the knight – into the role of the defender of the weak …
Harry Potter And The Theory Of Things, Erica Maitland Lange
Harry Potter And The Theory Of Things, Erica Maitland Lange
Master’s Theses
This thesis investigates the boundaries between body and object in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, seven children’s literature novels published between 1997 and 2007. Lord Voldemort, Rowling’s villain, creates Horcruxes—objects that contain fragments of his soul—in order to ensure his immortality. As vessels for human soul, these objects rupture the boundaries between body and object and become “things.” Using contemporary thing theorists including John Plotz and materialists Jean Baudrillard and Walter Benjamin, I look at Voldemort’s Horcruxes as transgressive, liminal, unclassifiable entities in the first chapter.
If objects can occupy the juncture between body and object, then bodies can as …

Formal, Bounded, And "Hyper" Rationality In Police Processing Of Sexual Assualt Claims: Case Dispositions And Ucr Reporting, Brooke M. Wagner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Over the past three decades, many scholars have examined the prevalence, consequences, and official sanctions of sexual violence. The following study builds on past research by quantitatively examining police and crime analyst discretion in sexual assault claims. Using recently accessed data from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department from 2008 through 2010 and utilizing labeling theory, rape myth literature, and the theoretical perspectives of justice processing outcomes, I assess the extent to which police officers and crime analysts are influenced by extralegal variables like victim and offender's race, victim's age, the location of assault, incident characteristics, and victim's background. I …
The Conditions Of Production Surrounding “Crawling With Monsters”: A Way To Create Social Consciousness Through Theatre In South Texas, Jorge Augusto Contreras
The Conditions Of Production Surrounding “Crawling With Monsters”: A Way To Create Social Consciousness Through Theatre In South Texas, Jorge Augusto Contreras
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Evaluating theatre's actual contribution to social development is subjective. There is a specific field of study that has been born from the need to incorporate all theatre outside the mainstream that seeks to do more than entertain an audience: “Applied Drama” or “Applied Theatre.” This study argues that through the process of creating the play Crawling with Monsters a group of UTPA students were empowered to make social change and ended up doing a critically acclaimed applied drama project regarding Mexico's drug war. After an introduction to the formation of the group and the situation to which it was responding, …
The Last Orchard, Caleb David Camacho
The Last Orchard, Caleb David Camacho
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The Last Orchard is a screenplay about two rival groups of ten-year-olds in 1989 Pharr, Texas. Their elementary school conflicts create a neighborhood war within their mobile home park, coinciding with the entire park's wide eviction and land ownership crisis. The story is written with a mythic fiction approach – a method I learned through Carl Jung's and Joseph Campbell's works on archetypes, mythology, and the hero's journey; it is a practical tool for storytelling. The Last Orchard is based on Homer's Iliad: the Trojan War, its heroes, and gods. Some plays and numerous films have their mythic counterparts, along …
