The Development And Debut Of Adam Esquenazi Douglas' Play "Murder And The English Gentleman", Adam Esquenazi Douglas
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the development process of the creation of a new playscript, "Murder and the English Gentleman", an adaptation of the short story "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" by Oscar Wilde. The play is a wild, comedy-of-manners presented in classic Wildean 19th century drawing room style. The document details the process of getting this script from short story to script to stage. Also included are some of the play's most significant drafts, the original short story by Wilde, production and rehearsal journals, and production photos. The play was presented by the University of Arkansas' Boar's …
Exitus: An Agent-Based Evacuation Simulation Model For Heterogeneous Populations, Matthew T. Manley
Exitus: An Agent-Based Evacuation Simulation Model For Heterogeneous Populations, Matthew T. Manley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Evacuation planning is important for businesses given the continuing occurrence of both natural and human-caused disasters throughout the world. Unfortunately, the traditional fire-drill approach is impractical for many large organizations but especially those responsible for airports and sports arenas. The purpose of this research was to develop a new computer program capable of simulating large scale evacuations in such buildings. The program, called Exitus, is different from other evacuation simulators in the way it considers the physical, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals with disabilities during emergency situations.
In this research, Exitus was used to simulate evacuations of three buildings …
Systematics Of Multillidae (Hymenoptera) With Special Emphasis On Dasymutilla And Their Allies, Kevin A. Williams
Systematics Of Multillidae (Hymenoptera) With Special Emphasis On Dasymutilla And Their Allies, Kevin A. Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Velvet ants are solitary wasps that are excellent candidates as model organisms for studying evolutionary phenomena like mimicry and biogeography. They can also be used in conservation studies because of their local abundance. Their abundance, coupled with parasitic lifestyle on native pollinators, suggests they will be economically important as native pollinators are implemented more widely. Velvet ants, however, are rarely studied and their research potential is drastically hindered by lack of phylogenetic and taxonomic data and lack of interest in the scientific community. In this dissertation, I sought to overcome the hindrances to mutillid research with a holistic systematic research …

Philosophical Influences In The Art Of War Found In The Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, Nathaniel Ethan Clark
Philosophical Influences In The Art Of War Found In The Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, Nathaniel Ethan Clark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
“Philosophical Influences in The Art of Warfound in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is an examination of Sunzi’s philosophy about leadership in The Art of War as applied to the moral character, or lack thereof, of historical Han Dynasty leaders, Liu Bei and Cao Cao. In Luo Guanzhong’s The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the two are fictionalized with oppositional personalities and corresponding philosophical bases. I explore the ways in which their actions embody or reject the philosophy found in Sunzi’s The Art of War.
The Androgynous Tomboy: Adolescent Liminality In The Contemporary Southern Bildungsroman, Brooke Alexandra Shippee
The Androgynous Tomboy: Adolescent Liminality In The Contemporary Southern Bildungsroman, Brooke Alexandra Shippee
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Androgynous Tomboy: Adolescent Liminality in the Contemporary Southern Bildungsroman is an analysis of the adolescent, specifically, of the young tomboy characters central to three Bildungsroman texts set in the American South during the twentieth century: Carson McCullers' The Member of the Wedding (1946), Bobbie Ann Mason's In Country (1985) and Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina (1993). I seek to challenge the very notion of the conventional tomboy within the coming of age literary genre by defining these youths as androgynous, rather than as young individuals who assume a singular gender opposite of their biological sex. Throughout my work, …
Dickensian Characters In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Alison Mckeever
Dickensian Characters In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Alison Mckeever
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
J.K. Rowling includes many Dickensian-esque characters in her Harry Potter series. This thesis compares the characters seen in Rowling's series with many of Charles Dickens's characters, specifically those seen in David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and Bleak House. Rowling's work is similar to Dickens's novels in many ways. The most interesting connection between the two is how they treat the characters on the periphery of the societies they have created, most notably their orphans, servants, and women.
Orphans are their most obvious comparison. Each author based their texts on the story of an orphan. However, there is more to their orphan …
Playing Devil's Advocate: The Attractive Shakespearean Villain, Jonathan Montgomery Green
Playing Devil's Advocate: The Attractive Shakespearean Villain, Jonathan Montgomery Green
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The characters of William Shakespeare have spawned countless words of critical interpretation inspired by the playwright's aptitude for fashioning intricate and conflicted figures. As a master character craftsman, Shakespeare is consistent in creating fascinatingly deep characters, and many of them have even gone so far as to generate entire literary archetypes. From the contemplative Prince Hamlet to the despicable yet charming John Falstaff, Shakespeare's characters remain eternal representatives of what any good character should be: interesting, provocative, and complicated.
However, among the playwright's most hypnotic figures are his villains, those characters whom audiences should by all counts detest but cannot …
Divine Hiddenness And The Challenge Of Inculpable Nonbelief, Matthew R. Sokoloski
Divine Hiddenness And The Challenge Of Inculpable Nonbelief, Matthew R. Sokoloski
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Divine hiddenness is the idea that God is in some sense hidden or obscure. This dissertation responds to J.L. Schellenberg's argument, based on divine hiddenness and human reason, against the existence of God. Schellenberg argues that if a perfectly loving God exists, we would not expect to find such widespread nonbelief in God's existence. Given the amount of reasonable nonbelief in the world, Schellenberg argues that an agnostic ought to conclude that God does not exist rather than conclude that God is hidden. Schellenberg's argument has three major premises: (1) If there is a God, he is perfectly loving; (2) …

The design process detailed here includes an analysis of the play, production history, research, renderings, and an evaluation of the overall process.
Happily Ever After Take Two: Rewriting Femininity In Hybridization Fairy Tale Films, Megan Estelle Troutman
Happily Ever After Take Two: Rewriting Femininity In Hybridization Fairy Tale Films, Megan Estelle Troutman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The tradition of fairy tales has evolved drastically over the past five hundred years. At the beginning of the 20th century, fairy tale cartoons became widely popular as an independent medium, as well as introductions to larger films. In 1937, Walt Disney started the tradition of fairy tale cinema with the release of Snow White. Since that time, Disney has released and re-released eleven princess fairy tale films. Critics and parents alike ridicule Disney for its depictions of women as submissive and subservient. Recent films have used fairy tale tropes, without referring to a specific classic tale, in order to …
Power Evokes Reluctance For Group-Relevant Advocacy Among Marginalized Groups, John C. Blanchar
Power Evokes Reluctance For Group-Relevant Advocacy Among Marginalized Groups, John C. Blanchar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Marginalized groups face difficulties voicing their interests. They are perceived as more self-interested, biased, and excessive for advocacy relative to majority groups. While such accusations are intimidating in their own right, powerful members of marginalized groups may be especially sensitive to reprisals in response to advocacy. The present research highlights the ironic role of power on group-relevant advocacy among marginalized groups; identity-based pressures dissuade advocacy because it is personally costly. An Internet study and one lab study examined the effect of high and low power primes on women's self-reported and actual willingness for group-relevant advocacy. Data support my hypothesis that …
Metrical Transition And Resolution In The Music Of Blindside, Patrick Sallings
Metrical Transition And Resolution In The Music Of Blindside, Patrick Sallings
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Meter in rock cannot always be determined by the backbeat. I have adapted metrical analysis models developed by Harald Krebs and others to the music of the rock band Blindside to address the issue of identifying logical metrical schemes in a particular repertoire of rock music. Blindside's use of metrical dissonance necessitates expansion of the existing analytical models in that the meter in some of their songs is ambiguous at times, allowing for a period of transition from one metrical scheme to another. The ambiguity of the meter in songs such as "The Endings," combined with the message of the …
And It's Also The Smell Of Laundry, Rachel Miranda
And It's Also The Smell Of Laundry, Rachel Miranda
HIM 1990-2015
This collection of poems brings to life the idea that in a poet's world, every day life and every single occurrence is a possible subject. Included are works brought on from the worst of circumstances, the youngest of memories, the happiest moments, and even the simplest of thoughts. The collection is autobiographical and reflective, a re-creation of the events taken place with the addition of present knowledge. The work here gives proof to the idea of cohesion between content and art form--it proves the notion that how something is being said is just as, if not more, important than what …
A Crimson Trail, Caitlin Mcgill
A Crimson Trail, Caitlin Mcgill
HIM 1990-2015
Willing to overstep literary conventions in order to ensure that meaning and purpose reign over structure, cross-genre writing works to push boundaries of genre and tear down the walls of limitation. This cross-genre thesis aims to test literary restrictions of structure and style and, as literary endeavors often do, to rattle our existence. In this thesis, nonfiction and fiction work together to drive meaning to the surface of the page, meaning that is universal in the individual stories as well as in the human experience. Although some characters are fictional and some real, they often intersect, their journeys and discoveries …
Samphire A Novella, Hillary Casavant
Samphire A Novella, Hillary Casavant
HIM 1990-2015
Engulfed by the tumultuous 1960s, seventeen-year-old Katherine Dayes conceals her pregnancy from the conservative seaside community of Samphire, her hometown. The novella traces a year in Katherine's life, from her summer of love through a winter stained by blood and moonlight. Throughout the story, Katherine endures the push and pull of a culture torn between tradition, represented by community leader Margaret Blythe, and modernism, embodied by the free spirit Evelyn Partridge. Inspired by the life of an actual eighteenth-century woman, Samphire explores the complexities of the 1960s feminist movement. Using vivid imagery of natural elements, it examines opposing views of …
"Carneys Point" - A Short Film, Alexander Parkin
"Carneys Point" - A Short Film, Alexander Parkin
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Carneys Point is a fifteen minute short film shot on 16mm film that tells the story of a woman's life, fractured into three facets each representing an important crossroad of a single life: the disenchanting prelude to the coming of age, the anxiety of motherhood, and the mental decay of old age.
The film is divided into three vignettes, which overlap to paint a multi-layered portrait of a woman, a trilogy of the human spirit, heart, and mind.
One is the story of a little girl who is obsessed with flight and dreams of escape. Though she has the naïve …

Constructing Depth Through Jane: Contemporary Interactions Between Austen And Interiority, Nicole Catherine Peters
Constructing Depth Through Jane: Contemporary Interactions Between Austen And Interiority, Nicole Catherine Peters
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The world is saturated with Jane Austen. She is in the movies, in bookstores, and in college courses. For years “lowbrow” and “highbrow” readers have fought over the “proper” way to read her work. Ian Watt, a popular literary critic, argued that Austen’s value resides in her use of interiority. For years, interiority was held as the measure of a novel’s worth or depth. Deidre Lynch exposed this interiority Watt spoke of as a cultural taste—one which Austen and Watt emerged from and helped to create.
In this project, I look at two contemporary manifestations of Austen—one that is considered …
A Kiss With A Fist Is Better Than None: Violence And Sexuality In The Maltese Falcon And The Big Sleep, Julie Nascone
A Kiss With A Fist Is Better Than None: Violence And Sexuality In The Maltese Falcon And The Big Sleep, Julie Nascone
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Based on Annette Kuhn’s theory that censorship does not merely repress a text but produces one as well, this thesis examines the ways in which The Maltese Falcon (1941) and The Big Sleep (1946) bear the mark of their industrial and cultural contexts. Censorship of violence and the transformation of actor Humphrey Bogart produce symptomatic representations of violence in the films The Big Sleep (1946) and The Maltese Falcon (1941).
The Maltese Falcon stars Humphrey Bogart in the early years of his film career. Until The Maltese Falcon, Bogart was known purely for his onscreen roles as a gangster …

Journey: Students' Perspectives On Studying Abroad, Rachel Tjornehoj
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
How can I share my entire study abroad experience in a short article? With all of the photos, stories, challenges, new experiences, comparisons and travels from a year abroad, it can’t be done. In a series of short articles, however, it is possible to catch a glimpse of all of the opportunities available when one decides to study abroad. For “Journey” magazine, I compiled stories from a variety of students’ study abroad experiences to show the diverse opportunities and possibilities available through study abroad. As more and more students study abroad and travel to new countries, the range of possibilities …
An Inspired Romance: An Exploration Of The Lives And Work Of Artists Alfred Stieglitz And Georgia O’Keeffe, Dana Janell Lindsay
An Inspired Romance: An Exploration Of The Lives And Work Of Artists Alfred Stieglitz And Georgia O’Keeffe, Dana Janell Lindsay
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Statement Question: How did the evolution of the artists’ relationship affect their individual work?
- With an emphasis the couple’s public and private persona, and its development over time.
The work begins with a brief biography of both artists, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe; providing an overview of their childhoods, education, and work, during the development of Modernism in the first half of the twentieth century. The work emphasizes the process by which Stieglitz facilitated the transition from pictorialism to modernism, his development of the period’s ideal female artist, and the opening of his famed avant-garde galleries. The work will also …
Dancing With A Literary Devil: The Rushdie Affair In Britain, Arjun Mishra
Dancing With A Literary Devil: The Rushdie Affair In Britain, Arjun Mishra
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This paper studies the Rushdie Affair, which gripped the world from 1988-1990 and at its height included a death sentence from the Ayatollah of Iran to a British subject. The Rushdie Affair was a series of events that began with the publication of The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, a critically acclaimed British-Indian novelist. The situation spiraled out of control from there, as Muslims throughout the world claimed offense to what they perceived as insults to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. The Rushdie Affair came to be characterized by violent riots in Pakistan and India, censures throughout the world, and …
American Zionism And The Evolution Of ‘Pro-Israel’ In U.S. Politics, Samuel Taylor
American Zionism And The Evolution Of ‘Pro-Israel’ In U.S. Politics, Samuel Taylor
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This thesis will determine how and to what extent the definition of ‘pro-Israel’ in U.S. mainstream political activism has undergone a change. In light of recent publications and polls indicating that ‘support’ for or ‘connection’ to Israel was waning among college-aged Jewish students in the United States, I decided to examine the potential causes for this attitude shift, and determine how the shift is being reflected in the U.S. relationship with Israel, if at all. To adequately identify changes in the U.S.-Israeli relationship and the definition of ‘pro-Israel’ in the United States, one must first distinguish between, at least, two …

An Exploration Of Perceived Stress Among Music Therapy Interns, Ayelet Walker
Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine the prevalence, possible sources, and effects of perceived stress on music therapy interns. An online survey was conducted with a sample of music therapy interns from all seven regions of the U.S. Of the 71 participants who replied to the survey, 61 participants (2 males and 59 females) completed the entire survey and were included in the data analysis. Results showed this sample had moderately low prevalence of perceived stress (M=15.54, SD=6.38). The five sources of stress with the highest frequency were "Other sources of stress NOT related to …
