Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Sunday morning found me out in the field with a stalwart group of Gettysburg devotees: the Gettysburg Discussion Group's annual spring Muster. When the coordinator of this year's Muster put out the call for something a bit different, perhaps something in town for Sunday, my ears perked up. I've been looking for groups to test out the nuggets of the College's Civil War story on and the GDG seemed like the perfect group of guinea pigs. [excerpt]

The Effect Of Furigana On Lexical Inferencing Of Unknown Kanji Words, Joy A. Palmer Jun 2012

The Effect Of Furigana On Lexical Inferencing Of Unknown Kanji Words, Joy A. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigates the effect of furigana on lexical inferencing. After completing a pretest to determine their knowledge of the target words, participants read a passage and completed a think-aloud protocol and questionnaire. The experimental group read a passage with furigana over all kanji words while the control group read a passage without furigana. The protocols were evaluated to determine the rate and quality of lexical inferences of 16 target kanji words. The results of the questionnaire were evaluated to determine participant perception of passage and kanji difficulty, self-assessed percentage of the story that was understood, and the degree …

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood Jun 2012

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood

Theses and Dissertations

Many art historians have debated the identity of the couple in Rembrandt's the Jewish Bride (1667). The painting is most often identified as an Old Testament theme. This is due to the seventeenth-century Dutch practice of using biblical "types" as ideal models for the structuring of the new republic founded on the Israelite ideology of nation building. Three of these biblical female types that have been separately associated with the female figure in the Jewish Bride are, Rebecca, Ruth, and Esther. As these biblical women represented different notions of power through their respective narratives, this thesis argues that Rembrandt deliberately …

Optimising Gastronomic Heritage In A Peripheral Region, Marlene Proctor, Michael Mulvey

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Peripheral regions and particularly island peripheral regions have many attractions as tourism destinations, not least their pleasing geographical settings and the sense of renewal which they can inspire. Such regions often face the challenges of seasonality, depletion of population, difficulty of access and infrastructure deficit. The objective of this exploratory study was to develop a model for the enhancement of the tourism product in a peripheral setting in Ireland. The work was undertaken in collaboration with the office of Udaras na Gaeltachta in the region. The approach was a) to scope the chosen location in terms of innate assets and …

The Virgin's Kiss: Gender, Leprosy, And Romance In The Life Of St. Frideswide, Gary Stephen Fuller Jun 2012

The Virgin's Kiss: Gender, Leprosy, And Romance In The Life Of St. Frideswide, Gary Stephen Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

The longer thirteenth-century Middle English verse life of Saint Frideswide found in the collection of saints' lives known as the South English Legendary (SEL) narrates an event unique to medieval hagiography. In the poem, a leper asks the virgin saint to kiss him with her "sweet mouth," which she does in spite of her feelings of considerable shame, and the leper is healed. The erotic nature of the leper's request, Frideswide's reluctance to grant it, and her shame throughout the incident represent a significant departure from the twelfth-century Latin texts on which the SEL version of the saint's …

An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of "The Happiest Toddler On The Block" Parenting Strategies By Young Mothers, Amye Elizabeth Bock Jun 2012

An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of "The Happiest Toddler On The Block" Parenting Strategies By Young Mothers, Amye Elizabeth Bock

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Young parents and their children are considered a high-risk population as they are more likely to lack social support networks, have limited access to opportunities to enhance parenting skills, and are often financially dependent. Young children whose mothers have poor parenting skills are more likely to have persistent problem behavior. Three young mothers living in a transitional housing facility participated in this study. The purpose of this study was to determine if these mothers could implement parenting strategies that are a part of a commercially available parenting book and DVD. This study found that: (1) mothers were able to correctly …

Learning Without Being Taught: A Look At How Schools, The Home And The Neighborhood Influence "Race" Conceptualization, Owen Christopher Gaither Jun 2012

Learning Without Being Taught: A Look At How Schools, The Home And The Neighborhood Influence "Race" Conceptualization, Owen Christopher Gaither

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Where do we get our ideas about the concept of `race'? The conceptualization of `race' has long been a topic of interest in the social sciences and society in general. The word `race' has been used and defined in different ways and different purposes throughout U.S. history. The definition of `race' therefore is arbitrary, changing according to the situation, but the consequences of how the word `race' is used are concrete and effect peoples lives daily. This research, in accord with much of the literature on the topic, shows that public schools play a major role in the conceptualization …

Investigation Into The Mechanism Of Salicylate-Associated Genotypic Antibiotic Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus, Nada Salah Helal Jun 2012

Investigation Into The Mechanism Of Salicylate-Associated Genotypic Antibiotic Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus, Nada Salah Helal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growth of Staphylococcus aureus with the NSAID salicylate increases phenotypic resistance (SAPAR), and the frequency at which heritable resistance occurs to various antibiotics (SAGAR). This study describes the effect of salicylate on heritable and phenotypic resistance to a set of antibiotics for laboratory and multi-drug resistant strains of S. aureus and investigates the link between resistance and SAGAR. Drug gradient plates were used to determine phenotypic resistance to antibiotics targeting DNA replication, transcription, translation and the cell wall in the presence or absence of salicylate. To measure heritable resistance, mutation frequencies were determined for each antibiotic in the presence and …

Cooking In Crisis: Lessons From The Uk., Martin Caraher Jun 2012

Cooking In Crisis: Lessons From The Uk., Martin Caraher

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The concern with low levels of cooking skills among the British population can be traced back to the 1780s coinciding with the start of urbanisation of the English rural classes. Modern concerns with the lack of cooking skills, since the 1980s, have focused on the links to healthy food choice and preparation. This has resulted in a number of initiatives but little policy development to support cooking in any structured way. Cooking was de-facto removed from the educational experience in schools in England and Wales. After much intensive lobbying the Labour government promised to introduce practical cooking classes for all …

The Development Of Molecular Gastronomy As A Subject Discipline At The Dublin Institute Of Technology, Roisin Burke, Pauline Danaher, Mark Traynor

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Molecular gastronomy is the study of the physical and chemical culinary transformations that occur during preparation, cooking and consumption. Molecular gastronomy differs from food science as the social, artistic and technical components of culinary and gastronomic phenomena are explored. At the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) the aim of developing molecular gastronomy modules is to use them as a tool to teach scientific principles to those who work in the Culinary Arts. Students and graduates can then apply their knowledge to develop and create novel dishes and food products. Scientific principles are taught, explained and demonstrated in the kitchen environment, …

Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Norm Mathers Jun 2012

Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Norm Mathers

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

The New Testament doctrine of reconciliation has been misunderstood and misinterpreted. The historical result has been a faulty understanding of the Pauline model of reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:16-21. Both Aulen’s Christus Victor and Barth’s Humanity of God have stopped at general reconciliation. It is through Christ’s death that the world has been reconcilied to God and God to the world. No offer of salvation is necessary. The failed understanding of the meaning of reconciliation has led to focus on the horizontal relationship of reconciliation between individuals and peoples of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Some support is found in …
