I recently made a rather significant move from Omaha, Nebraska to Stockholm, Sweden. I accepted a visiting lecturer position in the English Department at Stockholm University, where I am teaching a variety of linguistics courses and supervising student research projects.

One part of moving is that I had to say goodbye to my home comic book store, Legend Comics in Omaha. I had to shut down my pull file, and I already miss being able to sit in the coffee shop there, browsing comics and getting my caffeine buzz on. Asmaul Husna: Linguistic Forms, Theological Meanings, Pedagogical Implications, And Their Equivalents In Indonesian Translation, Nurul Murtadho

Viewed from their linguistic forms, Asmaul Husna are classified into the mubalaghah group, whose meanings require the addition of “Maha” (the All-/Omni-/the Most), and the non-mubalaghah group, without the word “Maha.” Out of 99 names, only 69 appear in the Qur’an with different frequencies, ranging from 1 to 138 occurrences. The implication of this fact for professional educators is the requirement of pedagogical competence, personality competence, and social competence. Based on five data sources, four variants of translation were identified, and shifts in form and meaning were found. However, according to Islamic theology, all names in Asmaul Husna must be …

Placing self-autonomy of human beings as purely rational subjects represents one extreme, while positioning rational human subjects as entirely dependent on psychological and socio-economic relations represents the other extreme. This study aims to explain how the main character, Minke, in narrative discourse addresses these two extremes. The data in this research were in the form of textual units analyzed using Bühler’s semiotic model. The results of the study show that there are three ways used by subjects to express themselves: (1) the symptomic way, expressed through validity claims of honesty; (2) the signalic way, shown through regulative speech using normative …

Fantasy, Desire And Identity Framing The Identity Construction Of Luh Sekar, Evi Eliyanah

This article examines the roles of fantasy and desire in the process of identity construction as experienced by Luh Sekar, one of the characters in Oka Rusmini’s most notable work of fiction, Tarian Bumi. Employing Stuart Hall’s postulate on identity construction in a critical reading of the novel, the study finds that the subject’s identity construction is highly influenced by her fantasy and desire related to caste and gender. Caste not only structures women’s social location through rank and role, but also, as part of the symbolic order, constitutes women themselves.

Semiotics is a set of analytical approaches that has been applied in linguistics and anthropology. This article focuses on language and cultural symbols expressed in Pasang ri Kajang and analyzes them based on the grand theory of semantics. This research adopts a qualitative research perspective. Data validity was ensured through data collection methods including interviews, recordings, note-taking, elicitation, and focus group discussions. The results indicate that Pasang ri Kajang contains sacred ancestral messages transmitted through oral tradition. These messages embody forms of local wisdom related to sustainable environmental management. The focus of this research is the local knowledge system concerning …

Appreciating Indonesian contemporary paintings created by Agus Suwage must be related to the painter’s background, existence, culture, and the condition of the national environment. Suwage mostly exploits himself as an object that later becomes a medium to express his restlessness through ideas. The self-portrait objects in Suwage’s paintings function as metaphoric icons. However, the portraiture techniques chosen by Suwage in his works do not narrate a personal story about himself.

This thesis approaches the fictional works of three contemporary Latin American authors: the Brazilian writers Regina Rheda, Letícia Wierzchowski and the Argentine author Gustavo Nielsen. This dissertation seeks to discover the ways in which participation in an online social networking site affects interlanguage pragmatic development. Livemocha is an online social network centered around language learning that emphasizes the collaboration required in constructing language. This social networking site encourages learners to establish an identity through their user profiles and to reach out to other members through email, text-based chat, video chat, or peer-reviewed lessons. This study examines interaction in text-based chat between native speakers (NSs) and language learners of Spanish in this environment. This dissertation examines key moments in fictional and autobiographical texts when gender construction and colonization intersect and create the possibility for reciprocal visual exchange between disparate people. In a visual exchange, the participants actively and meaningfully look at one another, at the same time acknowledging the others subjectivity. I argue that these moments hint at the subliminal utopian desire by the author, and perhaps the reader, for a more equal, even democratic, community. This dissertation analyzes the works of three early Chinese immigrant writers (Yung Wing, Yan Phou Lee, and Wong Chin Foo) and two mixed race writers (Edith Eaton and Winnifred Eaton) in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century North America in order to critique the formation of early Chinese American literature. Borrowing W. E. B. Du Boiss construct of double consciousness and Amy Ling's theory of between worlds, I argue that the complicated double consciousness exhibited in the works of these early immigrant writers demonstrates their across lands strategies of negotiating identities prior to and during the Exclusion Era (1882-1943).
