The purpose of this qualitative research study employing a cross-case analysis on previous case studies is to better understand the engagement of Latino students in a small number of cultural sensitivity programs and the teaching practices that are factors in the development of their academic achievement. In the traditional infrastructure of public schools, assimilation is built on fundamental values aligned with the U.S. political establishment rather than on the value of adaptation to the demands and conflicts of other cultures. Thus, less-empowered groups are at a disadvantage resulting in subgroups abandoning their ideas and reducing their contributions to human capital. …

Semantic Priming Of Familiar Songs, Sarah K. Johnson, Andrea R. Halpern

We explored the functional organization of semantic memory for music by comparing priming across familiar songs both within modalities (Experiment 1, tune to tune; Experiment 3, category label to lyrics) and across modalities (Experiment 2, category label to tune; Experiment 4, tune to lyrics). Participants judged whether or not the target tune or lyrics were real (akin to lexical decision tasks). We found significant priming, analogous to linguistic associative-priming effects, in reaction times for related primes as compared to unrelated primes, but primarily for within-modality comparisons. With 1,000 Continentals and 1,300 militia, General George Washington assigned General Nathanael Greene to defeat the British in the out hem region of North and South Carolina and Georgia and win the American Revolution.' Between 1780-1781, the British restored South Carolina's loyalist government, and proved victorious at battles in Savannah, Georgia, and in Charleston and Camden, South Carolina. The British also had numerous Tory (colonists loyal to the King) sympathizers in the region. Nathanael Greene's mission was to defeat the British Army in the South with few regular troops, limited supplies, and no local government to call upon for assistance. …

Durante degli Alighieri, known throughout the world as simply Dante, was a fourteenth century Italian poet, philosopher, literary theorist, and politician. He is best known for his epic Commedia, which was later dubbed The Divine Comedy. Commedia is generally considered the greatest Italian literary work and a masterpiece of world literature. Due to the turbulent political atmosphere of his time and place, Dante spent over a third of his life living in exile. This paper will explore the details of Dante's exile and the influence that it had upon his work.

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series (2005–8) demonstrates a strong connection with the theology, cultural practices and history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), of which Meyer is an active member. One of the strongest ways in which this connection is demonstrated is through characterisation: specifically, by featuring vampires and werewolves as prominent supernatural characters in the text. Twilight employs vampires as a metaphor for the LDS Church. By eschewing literature’s traditional association of vampires with subversive acts, especially subversive sexuality, and rewriting them as clean-cut pillars of the community, Twilight not only charts but promotes the progression …

The caricature of the ‘pan-pan’, or amateur female prostitute, complete with western-style fashions and garish makeup, has become an iconic symbol of Japan’s defeat in the Asia-Pacific War and subsequent Allied Occupation. Portrayed in a mostly negative light, she simultaneously represents the ostensible sexual excesses of female liberation, the most visible rendering of Japanese emasculation, and the sexual exploitation of women by Allied servicemen. This article employs textual analysis to examine the financial statement reporting by provincial hospital boards in Papua New Guinea(‘PNG’) as they attempt to comply with mandatory financial statement reporting. Hospital boards in PNG are established under the Public Hospital Act 1994 (PNG), which requires the boards to satisfy the accounting, financial management and reporting requirements indicated under the Public Finances (Management) Act 1995 (PNG). The existing literature on hospital board reporting compliance has previously focused on developed countries with sound governance systems and developed infrastructures. I chose to do a project related to cancer for my Painting 1 class. Using oil paint, I wanted to create a more symbolic representation of cancer. So I made a cloud-like, cancerous mass with streaks of chaotic color swirling around a central face. The face represents any person affected by cancer and has had to “shut down” their emotions in order to function. I wanted the skin texture to be almost metallic as if it is metal armor or robotic-like, to support the idea of “shutting down” one’s emotions. The blank expression also portrays this idea.

This paper discusses the resurgence of ethno-politics in Guinea in conjunction with the reintroduction of multiparty politics after three decades of single-party and military rule, and the trend’s multilayered repercussion into the Guinean Diaspora of North America. It further examines the principal ways in which ethno-regionalist organisations populating that Diaspora use and misuse new media outlets (web sites,web radio stations, and blogs) in order to promote the political agenda of their respective ethno-political elites.
