One of the most consistent issues students of Southern culture have grappled with for over a century is what precisely makes the American South a distinctive part of the country; that is, apart from geography is there a mindset and particular set of behaviors that distinguishes the South from the rest of the country? One of the most consistent qualities attributed to Southern character is a strict though congenial code of civil behaviors.

The poets Traci Brimhall and Keith Montesano joined us for a poetry reading at this year's Humanities Symposium. Their work, though different aesthetically, speaks to the intersection of violence and nature, humanity and ruin. Brimhall and Montesano seek to understand the unknowable through language, exploring elegy, myth and every form of rapture. Embedded in these searches is also the very nature of civility.

Women’S Exile And Transatlantic Epistolary Ties In The Work Of Pilar De Zubiaurre, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

In this essay, I analyze Pilar de Zubiaurre’s experience of exile by focusing on the articles she published in the magazine Euzko Deya and the letters she wrote and received in Mexico. Among the letters Zubiaurre received, I study those from María Martos de Baeza. My main argument is that for Zubiaurre, writing became a fundamental way to cultivate her transnational contacts and build bridges across the Atlantic. Through her articles, she travels back home in her imagination, while through her letters she connects as directly as possible with her native country. According to John Lukacs, German people's views on Hitler and Nazism once got examined right after the fall the Third Reich in the 1950s but this subject has lost its appeal since then. How do Germans nowadays, specifically those young ones raised in the "New Germany" after the fall of the Berlin Wall, think of Hitler and their country's Nazi legacy? This dissertation is to explore how six young Germans growing up in the new "unified Germany" interpret two films' representations of Hitler and Nazism.

This paper aims to analyze and compare the acoustic characteristics of the vowels and tones in the Phrae Pwo Karen spoken by three generations. The data was collected at Khangchai Village in Wang Chin District, Phrae Province. A wordlist of Pwo Karen vowels and tones was recorded directly on to computer using Adobe Audition version 2. Fifteen female informants were divided into three groups: those over 60 years old, those 35-50 years old and those under 25 years old. The total number of test tokens was 405 for vowel analysis, and 810 for tone analysis. The fundamental frequencies and formant …

The Sgaw Karen dialect of Ban Pa La-u, Amphoe Hua Hin, Thailand, has four nasals: /m/, /n/, /ɲ/, and /ŋ/, that appear in syllable-initial position. Review of the relevant literature indicates that initial /ɲ/ has been less studied acoustically due to the lack of palatal nasals in the consonant systems of most languages. Thus, this Sgaw Karen dialect is suitable for investigating the place of articulation of nasals. The acoustic characteristics examined include the duration, intensity, and frequencies of the formants (resonances) of the nasal murmurs as well as the frequencies of the formant transitions into the following vowels /a/ …

Citizen Bunker: Archie Bunker As Working-Class Icon., Kathleen Collins

Archie Bunker, the central character and patriarch of Norman Lear’s “All in the Family,” (1971-1979) has been referred to as an “everyman” and an “angry-man prototype” with “hard had prejudice.” The name Archie Bunker itself has become synonymous with a blue-collar, racially chauvinistic mentality. The title of the show’s pilot and theme song, “Those Were the Days,” emphasized Archie’s dream of a simpler (though idealized) time, a world that he could understand and upon which he could exert some control. In her contribution to Sexuality in Muslim Contexts: Restrictions and Resistance (ZED Book, UK), Anissa Hélie contrasts the emphasis on victimization of both ‘Muslim women’ and ‘gay Muslims’ in mainstream Western discourses with actual strategies designed by advocates of gender equality and sexual rights from Muslim contexts.These strategies include religious reinterpretation efforts in South Africa and Indonesia, and organizing geared towards public visibility in Lebanon, Turkey and Morocco.

This thesis examines the experience of personal breakdown in the American Civil Rights Movement. It proposes that breakdown was triggered in individuals by the practice of nonviolence and contends that breakdown precipitated the Movement's shift away from nonviolence toward the more self-protective tactic of black power.
