UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses

This research explores the role of returning African American veterans in the Civil Rights Movement in Jacksonville from 1945-1960. Black World War II veterans not only faced the typical challenges of returning to civilian life, but took up the fight for equality as well. While this work acknowledges existing arguments about black veterans in the Civil Rights Movement, it emphasizes and analyzes the importance of their military benefits and experience. African American soldiers received training in various fields like combat, supply, and intelligence. This training translated into useful skills in the postwar period. The goal of this study was to examine the influence of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic delivery modes of Franklin Method images (anatomical bone rhythms, metaphorical image, and tactile aid, respectively) on the performance of college dancers’ Plié Arabesques by assessing its influence on three measures: plié depth; maintenance of rotation; and simultaneous use of hip, knee, and ankle (Tri-fold). Eighteen participants performed a series of Plié Arabesques during three visits over a period of two months; at each visit, pliés were performed before and after an image intervention, and the change in mean Likert scale rating was calculated for each …

The American tradition of "harmless" name-calling truly cements in middle school. It is typically dismissed as a part of growing μp; however, when more and more violent incidents are connected to middle school experiences, it should cause the country to pause. How hard is it to set the standard for civility during the pre-teen years? Ironically, if not tragically, much of the language on the national campaign trail is frighteningly reminiscent of lunchroom taunting. This historic divisiveness needs to be addressed in real time.

My contribution to this year's dialogue is inspired by the Symposiums title, "Civility and its Discontents:' Immediately, I think of Freud's Civilization and its Discontents. As I understand Freud's argument in that 1930 monograph, civilization itself is a great struggle between Eros and Death, between Love and Aggression. The process of civilization is carried out by the repression of basic instincts-instincts that are sexual or aggressive or destructive. So when we hear "civility,, in the place of "civilization:' it generates some interesting questions.

Reading The Civil War And Civilities In Faulkner's Unvanquished, Peter Kuryla

William Faulkner's novel The Unvanquished reduces the futility of the Southern cause in the Civil War to the comic image of two boys feverishly running back and forth carrying a leaky bucket from a water well. The scene in the novel moves beyond mere comic elegy for the Southern Lost Cause, becoming tragi-comic because the futility that Faulkner describes has to do with something much more stable and constant, namely the ways that the land, "that ponderable though passive recalcitrance of topography" being much older, resists the boys' efforts in miniature, but also scarcely listens to the reports of grownup …

The Civil Self: Authenticity With,Out Alienation, Melanie Walton

What, then, is the true status of the relation between the examined self and the civic self-that is, between the self who lives the philosophically worthwhile life and the self who is the worthwhile citizen? Can one genuinely follow examination where it leads, find his or her true and authentic self, and be a good citizen at once? Or is the authentic life necessarily uncivil, leading to the necessary alienation of the philosophical soul from society?
