The purpose of this project is to compare the relative robusticity between native populations in New York State from the Archaic, Woodland, and Historic time periods. Musculoskeletal markers are used to determine any similarities and differences in robusticity between ages, sexes, and time periods. Relative robusticity is also assessed in terms of upper and lower limbs to further investigate any habitual activity patterns that can be discerned between groups. It is hypothesized that the Archaic populations would be comparatively more robust than the Woodland and Historic periods. This research project aims to provide an in-depth analysis of women in the landscaping field. It is important to expand on the literature on nontraditional blue-collar occupations, as more women are moving into these jobs in this 21st century. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (2001), the landscape and horticultural services industry is ranked 11th in the top twenty fastest growing service industries, almost two times the average for job growth. This occupation represents a significant, viable and fruitful arena for sociological investigation, as well a fantastic occupational option for women.

The protagonists of three of William Faulkner's major novels, Absalom, Absalom!, The Sound and the Fury, and Go Down, Moses each suffer from a compromised self that originates out of a past that contains excised elements. This revised history, which redacts past sins of rape, murder, and racial mixing, serves as a foundation for the present, passed down to the Faulknerian protagonists, Quentin, Jason, and Isaac, along lines of paternal inheritance. This thesis explores my personal experience of having an absent biological father and my attempt to try to understand why my father left my family before I was born. While my biological father was physically absent my entire childhood, there are other children who have fathers who are both physically and emotionally absent for different portions of their lives. This dissertation illustrates the terms in which indigenous' conceptions of childrearing and childhoods were discussed and depicted in a Mesoamerican setting of the XVI Century. During this early colonial period, Nahuas from Central Mexico realized that Spanish colonizers were interested in learning about and transforming even the most intimate aspects of their lives, including the meaning of a girl and a boy of different ages, and the practices of childrearing. In the process, friars and Nahuas had agreements or experienced contradictions regarding how girls or boys should be raised. This dissertation examines the efforts of three US NGOs to defend human rights in Central America in the 1980s. It analyzes the campaigns of Amnesty International USA, the National Lawyers Guild, and the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, and compares their goals, methods, and effectiveness in protecting Central American human rights. By analyzing the ways in which the NGOs ameliorated the effects of human rights violations in Central America, primarily through their refugee assistance programs, it demonstrates that the movement had a more positive influence on human rights than is generally reflected in the existing literature.

This dissertation studies the many ways in which physical pain produces instances of personal piety in poems, narratives, and theological tracts from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Puritan New England. Specifically, the project revises the idea that spiritual regeneration happened only through Puritan contacts with established liturgical means and precast homiletics; it contends instead that conversion occurred because of bodily pain. Analyzing four canonical Puritan writers--Anne Bradstreet, Mary Rowlandson, Cotton Mather, and Jonathan Edwards--Theologies of Pain demonstrates that texts of even the most historically mainstream Puritans contend with the disruptive force of pain. This study investigates the economic organization of the small hilltop sites of Moxviquil and Huitepec, in the Jovel Valley of highland Chiapas, Mexico. In this study, I examine degree to which households at these sites had the autonomy to independently produce, consume or trade the fruits of their labor, and to what degree was their production controlled and/or consumed by more powerful sociopolitical forces. It is a common held belief amongst the intercollegiate forensic community that it breeds a culture of affirmation towards marginalized identities. However, as a competitor I never felt confident portraying my LGBTQ identity while at a forensic tournament. This prompted me to employ interviews of former LGBTQ competitors to explore how they managed their identity. Using grounded theory and autoethnography I uncovered themes related to gender, sex, sexuality, and gender identity performance as they confronted and interacted with forensic competition.

The remnant of the 1513 world map of the Ottoman corsair (and later admiral) Muhiddin Piri, a.k.a. Piri Reis, with its focus on the Atlantic and the New World can be ranked as one of the most famous and controversial maps in the annals of the history of cartography. Following its discovery at Topkapi Palace in 1929, this early modern Ottoman map has raised baffling questions regarding its fons et origo. Some scholars posited ancient sea kings or aliens from outer space as the original creators; while the influence of Columbus’ own map and early Renaissance cartographers tantalized others. One …

The article, inspired by Antonio Benítez-Rojo’s postmodern work on Caribbean identity, The Repeating Island, applies the metaphor of a ripple effect to the writers of the Cuban Diaspora. These are writers who have left Cuba after the Cuban Revolution, but who belong to different generations, have left at different times, have established themselves in different countries, and write in different languages on themes unique to their particular experiences and interests. Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough

This study explains the acquisition of the non-generic uses of the English definite article the by L2 learners. Chilean university students completed a questionnaire containing deleted obligatory uses of the. in all, four identified categories showed to have different accuracy rates. Of the four categories, the one most similar to the L1 was the least difficult to acquire while the most different resulted as the most difficult. This concurs with other research and can be explained by L1 rules that are transferred to the L2. The other two categories did not show the same acquisition rate as compared to previous …

This study was part of an ethnographic research project in the 2010 Census Assessment and Research Program to observe the 2010 Census Nonresponse Followup interviews with households that speak a language other than English, in areas of the U.S. with heavy concentrations of residents with limited English proficiency. A multilingual research team consisting of seven sub-teams in the seven primary languages (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese) was commissioned to carry out the research in the 2010 Census.

Since the Algerian war for independence against the French in the 1950s, the roles of Algerian women have been shifting over the past five decades. During the war for independence, women found themselves in positions of power, where their military assistance was necessary to win the war. However, once independence was gained in 1962, women were once again forced into the predetermined roles of wives and mothers. Over the next four decades, the situation in Algeria began to improve as the educational and work opportunities for women increased. The ramifications of Proposition 227, legislation that threatened to eliminate bilingual education passed by California in 1998, sparked a nationwide debate about the validity of education that non-English speaking students were receiving in a bilingual classroom versus that of an English-only classroom. While there was a deluge of arguments regarding the efficiency of English comprehension in the two classroom environments, what many commentators on the issue overlooked was the difference in the retention of the students’ identities.

Just after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect (1 Jan 1863) Abraham Lincoln signed a contract with two New York capitalists to transport 500 newly-freed ex-slaves to Ile-a-Vache, Haiti, where they would, under company supervision, found and maintain a colony. From the start, little went right. Failure was due largely to mismanagement and chicanery on the part of the company. The emigrants lived (and died) miserably on Ile-a-Vache for nearly a year, until they were returned to the U. S. on a government transport ship in March, 1864. The debacle seems to have cured Lincoln of his fascination with colonization.

Able school administrators understand that teachers are their most valuable asset. If Christian schools are to effectively serve the families who entrust their children to their care, teachers must demonstrate both professional competency and godly character. This study was an investigation of faculty perceptions of teacher professionalism at ten Christian schools in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. An online survey of 24 items was completed by 230 teachers (males=30; females=200). The survey instrument was a modified version of Tichenor and Tichenor’s (2009) four dimensions of teacher professionalism. Data were analyzed using a multivariate analysis-of-variance (MANOVA) …

有論者謂感生神話反映了先民從母系社會過渡至父系社會，這主要是根據「玄鳥生商」和姜嫄「履大人跡」兩個感生神話，推論契、后稷時期的社會狀況。然而，此說法有商榷之處，故對這論調仍有所保留。

本文會先介紹感生神話的定義及分類，分類方面將會從觸物感生、意念感生，以及不同的感生媒介把感生神話分類，並援引神話作為例證。接著嘗試歸納支持契、后稷時期由母系社會過渡至父系社會此說法的理據，然後提出一己之見，並援引其他感生神話為例，說明此論調的不足之處和可斟酌之點。這部份將從三方面進行論述，包括感生神話中女性的主動性、感生神話所反映之母系社會特徵，以及父權話語體系下的感生神話。

也斯的〈養龍人師門〉是一則神話文學，寫於1975年，收錄於《養龍人師門》一書。作者汲取了古代神話元素，配合魔幻寫實的手法，反映現實。以下將會追溯相關的典籍記載，繼而找出也斯所作的增補，最後分析該篇神話文學的幾個主題，探討作者的創作意義。

成神的枷鎖 : 從〈女化蠶〉淺談傳統社會的價值觀念, Wai Yan Chau

蠶桑絲綢之業，中國為最早的起源地，商代甚或更早時期已有蠶絲業，「甲骨文中不但有『桑』、『蠶』、『絲』、『帛』等字，而且從桑、從絲的字多達一百餘個」110；且以絲綢的經貿發展最盛，對外貿易之通道更以「絲綢之路」命名，謂中國為「絲綢之國」也不為過。由養蠶、抽絲、到紡織，養蠶一步是基礎，對蠶便有好奇：到底蠶的本源是怎樣？由是衍生不同有關蠶的神話故事，而《搜神記》（卷十四）中的〈女化蠶〉，據袁珂之說，亦為推尋蠶的本源而成，屬「推原神話」之一。

〈女化蠶〉所載的蠶女並未成蠶神，當中只寫到人間女子與牡馬由許下婚諾到失諾被化成蠶；至唐《原化傳拾遺》〈蠶女〉（《太平廣記》卷四百七十九），蠶女被封為「九宮仙嬪」，才正式成神。112觀其蠶女神化，能看出人們對蠶神的崇拜；歸回文本，由女子失諾受罰化蠶，演變到女子守孝成神，更能反映當時的社會。本文將先淺述蠶神神話的源起及流變，及後從文本中探討神話中所反映當時傳統社會的文化、價值觀。
