Although Hanni Ossott (1946-2002) is considered a unique voice in Venezuelan poetry, no comprehensive studies of her work have yet been undertaken. This dissertation offers a critical reading of the poetry from her early and mid career, a period that encompasses both her best known and least known work. Ossott is mainly remembered for two books from the middle of her trajectory, Hasta que llegue el día y huyan las sombras and El reino donde la noche se abre. This dissertation, "A Genealogy of Voice and Gaze in Godwin, Wollstonecraft, and Mary Shelley," presents the unseen and unheard dimension of criminals, madwomen and monsters. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, modern man was born while imprisoning his neighbor. For the birth of modern man to take place, therefore, the criminals and the madwomen must be forgotten: the modern institutions of the prison and madhouse are instruments in this forgetting; the voices of these figures must be silenced by the modern discourses of criminology and psychiatry. This dissertation presents the responses, strategies, and meaning-making processes that forty trans (transgender) people engaged in when confronted with or when preparing for the possibility of encountering two different types of identity checkpoints, or what I regard as "borders": situations where sexed bodies and presentations of self would be matched against identity documents or records, and the use or attempted use of sex-segregated facilities. This thesis focuses on the relationship of Michel Foucault's concepts of madness and confinement through three Gothic stories by Edgar Allan Poe: "The Imp of the Perverse", "Hop Frog", and "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether". It seeks to recognize the way Poe lures the reader into the unconscious mind of the madman, and how that madness is decisively endured. Also, it investigates how these Gothic texts negotiate the physical and incorporeal boundaries of confinement created by, and established for, the mad.

This project examines how a general idea of time is revealed in American modernists' works and why its relationship to the term, "the virtual," prompts a critical revaluation of the literary period of "Modernism." This idea of relating time to virtuality illustrates how American modernists seek an alternative power of the poetic imagination. I explore this through the works of four exemplary American modernists: T. S. This thesis investigates the role of dialectics in Edgar Allan Poe's fiction and prose. With particular attention to "Eureka" (1848), as well as "The Fall of the House of Usher" (1838) and Ligeia (1838/45), I argue that much of Poe's thought relies on theological sources including the writings of Jonathan Edwards and the Gospel of John.

The present Master's thesis seeks to develop a better understanding of Ben Jonson's complex ideas concerning society's theatricality through a close study of what has been called his greatest city comedy, Bartholomew Fair. Looking at Jonson's treatment of cloth, clothing, and disguise throughout the play, I will explore his concerns with the basic problem of surface versus depth and outward show versus inner essence. Taking a special interest in how Jonson's anti-materiality complicated his position as a playwright, I will engage another dichotomy haunting Jonson: sensorial spectacle versus the idealistic/metaphysical art of poetry. This research aims to identify the geographic area between the Nore, Barrow, and Suir rivers as the primary gateway for significant permanent changes to the Irish cultural landscape between the fourth and sixteenth centuries. This has been done by examining the successive waves of invasion which have swept over the island, and noting the high frequency with which many pivotal events have occurred in the region. Christianity, the Vikings, continental Church reforms, the Norman invasion, and many subsequent repercussions by English administrators, entered into Ireland through this area first. Not only did the Sorbonne-educated Jacqueline Kennedy cultivate a sophisticated style and dress in the slim sheaths and tight slacks favored by Parisian couturiers, she spoke in a cultured, whispery voice and was fluent in several languages. This dissertation presents a multidisciplinary means of determining the actual content (foodstuff, non-foodstuff, or lack of contents) of Classic Mayan (A.D. 250-900) vessels. Based on previous studies that have identified the residues of foodstuffs named in hieroglyphic texts (e.g. cacao), this study is designed to further investigate foodstuff residues in the elite vessels indicated by text or image to contain those residues, and the methods employed for residue characterization. Prior to studies utilizing residue analysis, the content of Classic Maya vessels largely had long been inferred largely by ethnographic analogy, associating specific vessel forms with specific uses based on ethnographic …

The goal of this dissertation is to analyze the kinds of ethical challenges soldiers encounter during counterinsurgency operations, what decision making processes or values they use to resolve these challenges, and how military institutions and culture influence soldiers' ethical reasoning. The first part of the dissertation is an assessment of various theories of applied ethics and how these can be used by soldiers during counterinsurgency operations. "Only A Girl Like This Can Know What's Happened To You" : Traumatic Subjects In Contemporary American Narratives, Allison Virginia Craig

This project is primarily concerned with the difficulty of representing traumatic experience and the problem of seeing violence and exploitation as natural and inevitable functions of social life. It argues that texts attempting to expose exploitive hierarchies and structural injustices often risk having their stories subsumed and commodified by the profuseness and proliferation of countervailing messages about individual choice and personal freedom. This struggle is highlighted through historicizing five contemporary American narratives--Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm, the films Boys Don't Cry and Monster, Toni Morrison's Beloved, and Linda Hogan's Solar Storms--with and against critical concerns and popular texts. Like many other controversial social issues, same-sex marriage has followed the ebb and flow of the political stream for almost 30 years in the United States. What pulled this policy issue out of the policy stream and placed it front and center in the public's mind were the actions of a handful of local officials who, in the winter of 2004, acted against the status quo and instituted public policies in favor of same-sex marriage. Since Sylvia Plath's death in 1963 critics have not stopped trying to piece together her life and work. Most of their focus lies on her last collection, Ariel, widely considered her best work. This thesis looks at a lesser-known time, before Plath had even published her first book of poetry named "The Colossus." In 1959 Plath spends eleven weeks at a writer's residence in Saratoga Springs, New York called Yaddo. This study analyzes the representation of women detectives in three Hispano-American novels. In the last three decades women detectives started to introduce themselves inside predominantly male literary models. Nevertheless, while there is an abundance of figures, both feminine and tough, in the Anglo-American and Spanish literature, women detectives appear later in time in the Hispano-American detective novels. An examination of the Latin-American context will evaluate the causes of this initial sporadic appearance of the women detectives. Reconstructing the lives of historical literary figures when we possess only a few disconnected pieces of evidence proves to be a challenge for biographers and historical fiction writers alike. I examine the life of Christopher Marlowe as it is presented in a number of biographies and historical fictions and identify different approaches to the Marlowe narrative and the various arguments in favor of and against these (re-)constructions. Marlowe's life with its various gaps and mysterious aspects offers a case study of the reconstruction of literary lives. Fiction writers necessarily blur the line between fact and fiction, but biographers engage in …

"L'homme Ouvert" is a thesis that focuses on the translation of a full body of work by the poet Jean Sénac. Jean Sénac was a French-Algerian poet of the mid-20th century. He was a French-speaking Pied-noir homosexual whose life and poetry revolved around the facets of his complex identity and the search for a way to unify those different parts together into a greater, comprehensive whole. This thesis also discusses the poet's origins and how they affect his work, in addition to situating him and his work within his time as modernist, queer, post-colonial minor literature.

The present study sets out to identify the ideological implications that the current national systems of secondary education have for West Indians who ended up living in the “"buffer zone"” between Latin American and Anglophone Caribbean histories: Raizales in Old Providence Island, Colombia; Afrolimonenses in Limón, Costa Rica, and Creoles in Bluefields, Nicaragua. This thesis examines the divisions and boundaries made by the mechanisms of separation that authorize a false perception of land, animals, blacks and women as commodities in William Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses." Asserting that "Go Down, Moses" describes mixing as well as divisions, this study demonstrates that the dichotomous boundaries imposed upon nature and humans repeatedly fail to function. Wilderness and plantation land can never be separated as they exist in mixture. And the racial boundary between whites and blacks is destabilized and blurred by characters like Lucas Beauchamp and Tomey's Turl, who engage in resistance against the society whose …

In this paper, I seek to develop a normative account of the moral permissibility of humanitarian intervention based upon Rawls's work The Law of Peoples. In the first section of this paper, I argue that four specific criteria governing the permissibility of humanitarian intervention result from a close examination of The Law of Peoples. First, there must exist an on-going human rights violation in either an outlaw state or a burdened society. Secondly, this human rights violation must be grave in nature. Chicahuaxtla Triqui (Otomanguean, Mexico) is one of the rare tone languages with five contrastive level tones and its underlying tone system is even more complicated than its surface five-level tone system. The complexity of its underlying tone system has developed through the historical tone shifts from Proto-Triqui. The surface tone system of Chicahuaxtla Triqui is also unusually complicated and its complexity led to the insufficient analysis of the previous studies (e.g. Longacre 1952, 1957, 1959; Good 1978). The Regular Army of the United States played only a minor role in the American Civil War, a result of its being severally undermanned throughout that conflict. The Regular Army's lack of personnel was a product of an inefficient recruiting program that lacked the ability to compete for manpower with state volunteer regiments. The volunteers' higher pay, less rigorous duty, and generally high level of popular support at the state and local level caused most potential recruits to conclude that volunteer service was an easier path to take for fulfillment of military obligations. What If Oedipus Was A Queen? : What Freud And Lacan Can Tell Us Today About Femininity Through Fairy Tales And Their Reinterpretations, Taylor Victoria Churchill

This thesis argues against the interpretations of Sigmund Freud's Oedipus complex and Jacques Lacan's graph of sexuation as either misogynistic or anti-woman. The Oedipus complex has often been considered and taught as an explanation for binary sexual difference and heterosexual identity. This thesis will dispute such considerations through re-reading Freud himself among other literary scholars. Thus, the critiques that treat the complex as hetero-normative and homogeneous will be disproved. Additionally, psychoanalysts and academic critics alike accuse Lacan of a phallocentric framework. Because of this phallocentrism, Lacan is doubly accused of misogyny and patriarchy. Through reading his work on feminine sexuality, …
