World War Ii Archaeology In Fiji: Assessing The Material Record, Allison Young

World War II was a global conflict that dramatically changed societies and landscapes around the world. It also left behind a vast and diverse material record. Although the battles of the conflict never reached Fiji, a British colony in the South Pacific, the War's impact on the island group is clear. Through 1942 and part of 1943, while under threat of Japanese invasion, defensive installations and occupation facilities were built on the island. In the later years of the war, Fiji became a forward base for the Allied forces. This resulted in the construction of transportation infrastructure, and an influx …

Beyond Priapus: A Call For A Feminist And/Or Queer Theory Archaeology Of Roman Masculinity And Phallic Iconography, Ashley J. Barnett

Phallic iconography is ubiquitous throughout the archaeology of the Roman world and has raised questions about sexuality in ancient Rome. Dominant modern Western discourses privilege heterosexual male frameworks which many not adequately correspond to ancient Roman culture. Thus, the application of Feminist and/or Queer theory may expand academic insight into not only Roman sexuality, but also into the power and politics of the Republican Period.

Justice In Context: Assessing Contextualism As An Approach To Justice, Michael Buckley

Moral and political philosophers are increasingly using empirical data to inform their normative theories. This has sparked renewed interest into questions concerning the relationship between facts and principles. A recent attempt to frame these questions within a broader approach to normative theory comes from David Miller, who has on several occasions defended ‘contextualism’ as the best approach to justice. Miller argues that the context of distribution itself brings one or another political principle into play. This paper examines this claim. It considers several plausible strategies for carrying out Miller’s general project and argues that each strategy fails. Nevertheless, the author …

The following article is the author's treatise on the imperative for explicit theoretical use in North American archaeological approaches and research by critically assessing the views of Michelle Hegmon 's (2003:213-243) "Setting Theoretical Egos Aside: Issues and Theory in North American Archaeology" and Matthew Johnson's (2010:216-235) conclusions on the future of theory seen in Archaeological Theory: An Introduction, 2nd ed. This commentary discusses theory development in North American Archaeology as a discipline and advocates for the explicit use of theory in North American Archaeological research. Statement analysis is used by forensic investigators to evaluate the truthfulness of written and verbal statements. Currently, it is most commonly used on contemporary documents to search for deception; often, these inquiries focus on persons under investigation for a crime. Recently, the use of statistical formulae was introduced to the field of forensic linguistics. Although initially limited primarily to law enforcement, implementation of forensic procedures such as statement analysis has since produced successful results within the field of archaeology. It thus seems likely that linguistic analysis may produce favorable results when applied to historic documents.

A potential tool that can be utilized by historic archaeologists to locate and interpret archaeological sites is historic documents. One example of the ability to use documents to understand an archaeological site is the study the massacre that took place at the Whitman/Waiilatpu Mission, aformer Protestant mission near present day Walla Walla, Washington. While the fact that a massacre took place at the mission is well known, exactly how the events of that day unfolded are unclear. In 1979. China introduced the legislation of the One-Child Policy to be implemented as a temporary means of curbing such high population growth. Over thirty years have passed since its implementation. and this family planning policy still continues to be controversial. Much of academia has focused on the problems stemmingfrom this policy. such as increased abortions. the underreporting of live births. infants abandoned and/or left at orphanages. female infanticide and an imbalanced ratio of males to females among the Chinese population. The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has gained national attention over the past several years with their fierce protests at the fonerals of soldiers killed in action. American citizens outraged by the actions of the WBC pressured the lawmakers in 45 states to enact legislation curtailing the protesters' access to funerals. Claiming that the laws infringe upon their First Amendment rights, the WBC has challenged these legislations in court, and will continue to do so. Reduction measures, especially those measures which compute a scaled index, have been profitably employed in archaeological research on many Old World assemblages. Utilization of these techniques is still a burgeoning subject in North American archaeology, however, and North American assemblages present unique challenges to the analyst. Chief among these difficulties are the greater prevalence of hafted bifaces and other formal tools, especially when contrasted to the Mousterian toolkits that have been the traditional targets for reduction analyses. Other researchers have developed new methods for analyzing projectile points or end scrapers, though these methods are not without weaknesses and I am …
