Anchises Censorius Vergil, Augustus, And The Census Of 28 B.C.E., Eric Kondratieff
Anchises Censorius Vergil, Augustus, And The Census Of 28 B.C.E., Eric Kondratieff
History Faculty Publications
In Vergil’s Aeneid, Anchises, like Aeneas, may be seen as a pattern of Augustus,as his survey of his progeny reflects Augustus’ censorial activity(Augustus conducted his first census, without holding the office of censor,in 28 B.C.E.). This theory is supported by: verbal cues alluding to Rome’stopography and the location for the upper-class recognitio equitum; technicalterms used to describe Anchises’ activity as he assesses his descendants;Anchises’ hortatory and monitory speech, similar to that of censors knownfrom other literary works; and Vergil’s choice of heroes to represent therepublic, most of whom were censors or from censorial families.

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Language Policy In California, Steven Gomez
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Language Policy In California, Steven Gomez
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis aims to investigate the issues surrounding California's Proposition 227, an important language policy passed in June of 1998 which drastically limited bilingual education. This proposition requires that all public school systems be in English only. Using a method known as Critical Discourse Analysis, this study exposes the underlying bias embedded in the discourse of newspaper articles from: the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the Sacramento Bee. After analyzing articles from these newspapers various themes emerged which indicated that each newspaper adhered to either assimilationists' position which is conservative, or a pluralist position which is backed …

Thunder Rock: The Play, And Enriching The High School Curriculum, Jason William Bayless
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis is a position paper developing an argument for the advancement of the play Thunder Rock, by Robert Ardrey, into consideration for the California Reading List for Public High Schools. To support the validity of the argument the thesis explores three key elements: the content of the play itself; connections to the California Content Standards for California Public Schools; as well as related instructional methods appropriate to the task of teaching the play. The goal is to develop in this thesis not only an argument for the inclusion of Thunder Rock into the California Reading List, but also create …

Fighting The Great War: Reconsidering The American Soldier Experience, Jennifer D. Keene
Fighting The Great War: Reconsidering The American Soldier Experience, Jennifer D. Keene
History Faculty Articles and Research
Why men fight is a particularly apt question to ask about the American soldier in World War I. Unlike Europeans in 1914, Americans went to war with their eyes wide open. They had already seen the worst of industrial warfare both on the high seas when the 1915 Lusitania sinking illustrated the dangers of ocean travel and on the battlefield when the 1916 battles of the Somme and Verdun left no doubt about the staggering casualties trench warfare engendered. Nonetheless, Americans displayed a certain naive enthusiasm for war in 1917. When American soldiers arrived overseas, French soldiers noted how much …

The Political Economy Of Mass Printing: Legitimacy And Technological Change In The Ottoman Empire, Metin M. Coşgel, Thomas J. Miceli, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
New technologies have not always been greeted with full enthusiasm. Although the Ottomans were quick to adopt advancements in military technology, they waited almost three centuries to sanction printing in Ottoman Turkish (in Arabic characters). Printing spread relatively rapidly throughout Europe following the invention of the printing press in 1450 despite resistance by interest groups and temporary restrictions in some countries. We explain differential reaction to technology through a political economy approach centered on the legitimizing relationships between rulers and their agents (e.g., military, religious, or secular authorities). The Ottomans regulated the printing press heavily to prevent the loss it …
