Connecting Past And Present: A Rhetorical Analysis Of How Forensics Programs Use Storytelling To Promote Team Legacy, Stephanie Orme Jan 2012

Connecting Past And Present: A Rhetorical Analysis Of How Forensics Programs Use Storytelling To Promote Team Legacy, Stephanie Orme

National Forensic Journal

Given forensics programs' status as organizations at academic institutions, these teams experience changes in membership far more often than typical organizations. Each year, a team will graduate a class of seniors who, through their four years as a competitor, have helped shape the program's culture and legacy in numerous ways. Yet this void left by the graduating members is then filled by the incoming freshman or transfer student competitors who will now play a part in reshaping the team's culture. This constant change in organizational culture makes it vital that forensic programs go to extra lengths to ensure that their …

Questions Surrounding Questions: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Use Of Research Questions In Academic Writing, Stephanie Orme Jan 2012

Questions Surrounding Questions: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Use Of Research Questions In Academic Writing, Stephanie Orme

National Forensic Journal

The fact that researchers have begun to question the potentially unethical use of questions in research, and that the research question has become an increasing presence in all scholarly rhetorical criticism– including 99% of the speeches you will see this year– the use of the research question in a venue that has traditionally avoided it merits investigation. So in order to explore the objectivity and academic effectiveness of research questions in our field, I performed a content analysis of top rhetoric journals using Hyland’s method for analyzing questions found in the article “What do they mean? Questions in Academic 54 …

Agnes Martin, By Lynne Cooke Et Al. Dia Art Foundation: New York And Yale University Press: New Haven, 2011 (Book Review), Vittorio Colaizzi

Art Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph] The impression emerges, through reading this anthology and remembering the work, that Agnes Martin's paintings are somehow not there. Their qualities and effects are of a second order, not directly tied to their material facts, because as perceptions, they evade and exceed these facts. Although it is entirely clear of what they consist and how they were made, viewers report constant dissolution and condensation of screens, veils, or mists from the tiny elements on the surface. Emblems of the less than absolute sufficiency of empirical knowledge, they reinforce Martin's claim that "The cause of the response is not …

Case Study: The Bosnia Project, Anna Mahalak

VA Engage Journal

The purpose of this report is to critically examine William & Mary’s longest running student-run service trip. The Bosnia Project has sent William & Mary students to Bosnia each summer since 1998 to run a summer camp focused on teaching English with a partner Bosnian non-governmental organization (NGO). Psychoactive Substances And Paranormal Phenomena: A Comprehensive Review, David Luke Jan 2012

Psychoactive Substances And Paranormal Phenomena: A Comprehensive Review, David Luke

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper investigates the relationship between psychoactive substances and so-called paranormal

phenomena falling within the study of parapsychology. It is primarily concerned with extrasensory

perception (ESP)—telepathy, precognition, and clairvoyance—as well as out-of-body experiences

(OBEs) and near-death experiences (NDEs). Psychokinesis (PK), aura vision, encounter experiences,

and sleep paralysis only make a very limited contribution to this review as they are seldom related

to psychoactive drugs within the parapsychological literature. The paper borrows widely, but by no

means exhaustively, from parapsychology as well as transpersonal studies, anthropology, ethnobotany,

phytochemistry, psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and neurobiology, particularly

neurochemistry. It is organized into neurochemical models …

The Scent Of Cordite: Sydney’S Gangland Wars Of The 1960s, Camilla Nelson Jan 2012

The Scent Of Cordite: Sydney’S Gangland Wars Of The 1960s, Camilla Nelson

Arts Conference Papers

On Sunday June 26, 1967, the well-known Sydney baccarat operator Richard Reilly stepped out of his mistress’s flat in Manning Road, Double Bay. He adjusted his fedora, loosened his silk tie, and flicked a wrinkle from his bespoke tailored suit. He stood there, silhouetted in the streetlight, as a spray let off from a sawn-off shotgun cracked the night air, cutting a swathe through his chest and shoulder, the stray pellets shattering into the brickwork behind. Reilly was the latest victim in a gangland war that had engulfed the Sydney underworld for almost four years. But he was more than …

Inexpressibility In Augustine’S Just War Theory: Lessons For Modern Warfare, Matt Beard Jan 2012

Inexpressibility In Augustine’S Just War Theory: Lessons For Modern Warfare, Matt Beard

Philosophy Conference Papers

St. Augustine's Just War Theory is relatively unique in the history of just war in that he relies heavily on Divine involvement in his doctrine of just war. God is the ultimate source of the justice of all wars, and his command is the source of justice for some wars. Furthermore, the authority of political leaders is also derived from God. This is problematic for Augustine's theory because it renders the causa justa of wars inexpressible to the subjects of the sovereign, who are forced to rely on the sovereign's (divinely originated) authority. Although these ideas may seem a long …

Expressing The Inexpressible: The Work Of Mons John Cyril Hawes, Priest And Architect, Angela Mccarthy Jan 2012

Expressing The Inexpressible: The Work Of Mons John Cyril Hawes, Priest And Architect, Angela Mccarthy

Theology Conference Papers

What is the result of the combination of priest and architect, Anglican and Catholic heritage, English and Roman education in a deeply faith filled man?

The answer can be found in the hot and dry country of Geraldton Diocese Western Australia in the work of priest and architect Monsignor John Cyril Hawes (1876-1956). Hawes expresses the inexpressible through his many churches, hermitages, chapels, residential buildings and the Cathedral in Geraldton as well as other buildings in many other parts of the world. His deep and passionate faith is expressed in the eclectic use of symbols and forms encountered in his …

Jesus The Gardener – A View Of The Garden Scene Through Text And Image, Angela Mccarthy Jan 2012

Jesus The Gardener – A View Of The Garden Scene Through Text And Image, Angela Mccarthy

Theology Conference Papers

Our previous speaker, Jim Cregan, has given us a rich view of the notion of the Royal Gardener, the cosmic gardener, and the understanding that the gardener image is not simply a way of suggesting that Mary Magdalen was very confused, but rather the evangelist of the Fourth Gospel presenting us with a very rich symbol of the Risen Christ. From the garden of Eden, to the garden of Gethsemane and then to the garden of Paradise, the power of the symbol is there. As Jim noted, the allegorical motif of Jesus as the ‘cosmic gardener’ “achieved prominence in the …

2012-13 Series - Chris Mooney, University Center For The Humanities Jan 2012

2012-13 Series - Chris Mooney, University Center For The Humanities

University Center for the Humanities Events

Over the past decade in America, science has grown increasingly politicized. Scientists roundly denounced the administration of George W. Bush for suppressing research and taking anti-scientific positions; when President Obama came in, he promised great changes but did not always deliver. And now what?

In this talk, Chris Mooney, who has covered the politics of science for a decade in Washington D.C., takes a look at the future of science policy under the next president (Obama or Romney). Will climate change legislation pass? Will the administration take science seriously?

2012-13 Series - E.J. Dionne, University Center For The Humanities Jan 2012

2012-13 Series - E.J. Dionne, University Center For The Humanities

University Center for the Humanities Events

Our Divided Political Heart explores the tension between individualism and community throughout our nation’s history. Dionne contends that maintaining a balance between these two ideas is a responsibility that comes with the privilege of being American. However, the Tea Party’s interpretation of our history—an idealization of the Gilded Age and radicalized individualism—threatens this equilibrium. As Americans we must work together to restore the critical balance embodied by Lincoln, Clay, and Hamilton.

Hijas Rebeldes: Chicana Spirituality And The Re(Claiming) Of The Indigenous, Daisy Vargas Jan 2012

Hijas Rebeldes: Chicana Spirituality And The Re(Claiming) Of The Indigenous, Daisy Vargas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Though the Chicano nationalist movement of the 1960s and 1970s helped Chicanas/os embrace an indigenous identity traced back to the Aztecs of Mexico, it nevertheless proved alienating to Chicanas. In response to patriarchal structures of control within the Chicano movement and Western culture, Chicanas developed a mestiza consciousness. The grounding of this new epistemic tradition in ancient indigenous practices creates a Chicana spirituality and a method for identifying with the cosmology and goddess mythology of the Aztecs. Though critics of Chicana spirituality question the authenticity of Chicana claims to indigenous traditions, Chicanas employ their spirituality as tool to transform them …

The Hyperspatial Self: Henry James And Posthuman Modalities, Christina Patsiokas Jan 2012

The Hyperspatial Self: Henry James And Posthuman Modalities, Christina Patsiokas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the era of computing and ubiquitous media, scholars across disciplines have been developing new models for how humans operate in complex environments. This line of inquiry can be bracketed under the larger term of posthuman thought. This thesis attempts to engage the critical and fictional work of Henry James with several posthumanist texts to challenge the temporal limitations of both. Against the backdrop of posthuman discourse, James emerges not as the cherished father of modernism but rather as a pioneer of distant territories far beyond the ways in which the modernist novel conceptualized the self and its consciousness. James …
