Chalk The Block 2012 Poster, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2012

Chalk The Block 2012 Poster, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which took place October 12–October 14, 2012 in downtown El Paso. For the pop-up gallery component of the event, I organized a group of 15 students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters were judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown space, previously a vacant store front, which had been converted into a gallery for the three-day weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters went directly to the students.

Identity Campaign For A Local Jewelry Designer, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2012

Identity Campaign For A Local Jewelry Designer, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

This was a proposed identity and packaging campaign I designed for a local jewelry designer whose work is very much earthy and southwest influenced. The jewelery designer uses mainly sterling silver and copper along with semi-precious stones in the work. This is referenced by the use of metallic threads woven through the business cards, each unique. A rubber stamp was also created for packaging like the gift box. Flat-backed adhesive gems were applied to the various components for an added touch of whimsy and sparkle that juxtapose the utilitarian look and feel of the brown kraft paper.

Make It, Take It, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2012

Make It, Take It, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover I designed for 'Make It, Take It' by Rus Bradburd, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Steve Pytel is an assistant coach and top recruiter for a university basketball program. His goals are simple. He wants to keep his job and be a head coach someday. Keeping his wife barely makes the list. The team staggers; everyone’s days are numbered. Pytel was responsible for landing prized recruits Leonard Redmond and Jamal Davis. Pytel’s duties now? Keep Leonard out of jail. Make sure Jamal ignores the advice of his preacher, sidesteps his girlfriend’s pregnancy, and puts the ball in the …

Pop-Up Gallery For Chalk Theblock 2012, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2012

Pop-Up Gallery For Chalk Theblock 2012, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

2012 marked the fifth anniversary of Chalk the Block, an annual weekend-long arts festival held in downtown El Paso that attracts over 30,000 visitors. The pop-up galleries portion of the festival takes empty, for-lease spaces and turns them into art exhibition venues for the duration of the weekend. I was asked by the event organizers to curate my own pop-up gallery. For my gallery, I assigned students from my Spring 2012 Graphic Design 4: Typography class to design posters for the event. These posters were judged by the other UTEP graphic design faculty and the best 15 selected were screenprinted …

Geworfenheit Und Prometheische Scham Im Zeitalter Der Transhumanen Kybernetik Technik Und Machenschaft Bei Martin Heidegger, Fritz Lang Und Günther Anders, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Lessons In Leadership: Ulysses S. Grant, Sheila Cappel Jan 2012

Lessons In Leadership: Ulysses S. Grant, Sheila Cappel

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Leadership is not a definitive topic, in that great leadership is based on subjective determinants. What makes great leadership is a source of both fascination and extensive study. Are great leaders born, and destined to excel in circumstances they create for themselves; or do dramatic events create the need for great leaders? What can the life and Civil War experiences of Union General Ulysses S. Grant teach us about the answer to these questions? This paper provides a chronology of his life up to the onset of the Civil War, his military career during the war, and concludes with his …

Dirt Theory And Material Ecocriticism, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2012

Dirt Theory And Material Ecocriticism, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This essay speaks for dirty aesthetics. Although aesthetic landscapes readily inspire environmental thinking, a case can be made for grappling with the truly local dirty matter right at hand. Dirt, soil, earth, and dust surround us at all scales: we find them on our shoes, bodies, and computer screens, in fields and forests, and floating in the air. They are the stuff of geological structures, of the rocky Earth itself, and are mobile like our bodies.

Material Ecocriticism: Dirt, Waste, Bodies, Food, And Other Matter, Dana Phillips, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2012

Material Ecocriticism: Dirt, Waste, Bodies, Food, And Other Matter, Dana Phillips, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Chunks of walls and flooring crash in mangled heaps as an enormous orange crane smashes apart the science building. Fueled in part by energy funds, Trinity University is updating its campus. Several hundred feet away, purple martins swoop down to feed squawking chicks nestled in white plastic gourds dangling from an angular metallic pole. In the university's community garden, ripe tomatoes are going to waste. Beyond the demolition site, a grackle lands on the neatly mown grass, where he puffs up and struts while other grackles watch him.

The Biblical Ruth As Dama Principal: Tirso’S La Mejor Espigadera, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 2012

The Biblical Ruth As Dama Principal: Tirso’S La Mejor Espigadera, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The comedia mined a variety of source texts for its plots—Italian novelle, Spanish history, Greek and Roman mythology, and, of course, the Bible—but always managed to adapt plot, setting, and characters to the conventions of the Spanish national theater. This process offered great benefits, such as audience familiarity, as well as challenges, including inherent and unavoidable limitations on artistic freedom. One of the more interesting adaptations is Tirso de Molina’s reworking of the Biblical story of Ruth in La mejor espigadera, primarily because of the lack of dramatic potential offered by the original: there are no villains, no obstacles …

Faust’S Mountains: An Ecocritical Reading Of Goethe’S Tragedy And Science, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2012

Faust’S Mountains: An Ecocritical Reading Of Goethe’S Tragedy And Science, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Ecocriticism's environmental perspective views human beings, bodies, and culture as participants in ecological interactions and exchanges with the rest of the energetic and material world, including both biotic and abiotic forms. This ecocritical essay assesses how Goethe portrays Faust's mountain experiences in both part I and part II (1808, 1832) of the tragedy as engagements with physical matter rather than with spiritual inspiration. Indeed, by using ecocriticism to study Goethe's science as the context for the play, we see that Faust's many mountains are more than a setting; they actively destabilize his — and our — assumptions about “passive matter” …

Phillip C. Almond Heaven And Hell In Enlightenment England: Book Review, Ryan K. France Jan 2012

Phillip C. Almond Heaven And Hell In Enlightenment England: Book Review, Ryan K. France

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

P hilip C. Almond examines the changing concepts of heaven and hell, and the nature of the human soul, as interpreted in England between the second half of the seventeenth century and the early eighteenth century. This book, originally published in 1994, was greatly influenced by two magisterial studies: Daniel P. Walker's The Decline of Hell (Chicago, 1964) and Keith Thomas's Religion and the Decline of Magic (Oxford, 1997), though unfortunately Almond's primary points of departure and contributions are not especially clear. The final product will appeal to a more narrow audience than the title would suggest, but Almond presents …

Philosophy Of Intellect In The Long Commentary On The De Anima Of Averroes, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2012

Philosophy Of Intellect In The Long Commentary On The De Anima Of Averroes, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In the Long Commentary on the De anima, Averroes posits three separate intelligences in the anima rationalis or the rational soul: agent intellect or intellectus agens, material or passible intellect, intellectus possibilis or intellectus passibilis, and speculative intellect, intellectus speculativus, or actualized or acquired intellect, intellectus adeptus. In the De anima 3.1.5, “there are three parts of the intellect in the soul; the first is the receptive intellect, the second, the active intellect, and the third is actual intellection…,” that is, speculative or actualized, agent, and material. While material intellect is “partly generable and corruptible, …

Intellect And The Structuring Of Reality In Plotinus And Averroes, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2012

Intellect And The Structuring Of Reality In Plotinus And Averroes, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Though Averroes is not generally considered to be sympathetic to Neoplatonic thinking, there are definite parallels between the philosophies of intellect of Averroes and Plotinus. Both can be considered to be “Idealists” in that intelligible form precedes sensible form in perception, and that the material intellect of Averroes or Reason Principle of Plotinus, nous hylikos or pathetikos, depends in its functioning on the agent intellect of Averroes or Intellectual Principle of Plotinus, nous poietikos. The formation of the image in the oculus mentis is coincident with the formation of a thought, and the sensible form is a transient …

Kant's Argument From The Applicability Of Geometry, Waldemar Rohloff Jan 2012

Kant's Argument From The Applicability Of Geometry, Waldemar Rohloff

Philosophy Faculty Works

In this paper I develop a reading of Kant's argument from geometry based on distinguishing the roles of pure versus applied geometry. Once these roles are properly distinguished, I argue that the argument from geometry is not susceptible to the problems concerning the development and applications of non-Euclidean geometry, which are often thought to undermine the argument.

Historiography As Devotion, Suzanne Abrams Rebillard Jan 2012

Historiography As Devotion, Suzanne Abrams Rebillard

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

This article locates Gregory of Nazianzus's Poemata de seipso in the Classical historiographical tradition by comparing their historical meta-narrative to Herodotus' and Thucydides'. It then embarks on a case study of Poem 34, On Silence During Lent, closely analyzing the poem in light of recent narratological work on Herodotus' project. Like the Herodotean text, Gregory's piece reveals a variety of hermeneutical possibilities while simultaneously making the audience aware of the histor's compositional processes. The histor who emerges is a salvific and cosmological presence that focalizes the divine, thereby serving as an example of proper human/ divine relations. The poem would …
