Robert Penn Warren And Photography, Joseph Millichap Jan 2012

Robert Penn Warren And Photography, Joseph Millichap

Robert Penn Warren Studies

Robert Penn Warren’s career and canon demonstrate his more than casual interest in photography, much like those of several contemporaries in the Southern Renaissance. Warren’s 1972 essay about photographer Walker Evans recalls how photographs in the 1930s opened the emerging writer’s imagination to the power inherent in any art form to revise commonplace perceptions of social and subjective reality. Evans and many other photographers thus influenced Warren in his use of photographic tropes for an artistic transformation of the visual art of photography into the verbal art of literature. My close readings of recreated photographs in several major works of …

The Windhover And Evening Hawk Shudder In Sync: Gerard Manley Hopkins And Robert Penn Warren, D.A. Carpenter Jan 2012

The Windhover And Evening Hawk Shudder In Sync: Gerard Manley Hopkins And Robert Penn Warren, D.A. Carpenter

Robert Penn Warren Studies

The author traces the philosophical and poetic similarities between Robert Penn Warren and Gerard Manley Hopkins. In doing so, he addresses the meditative process that Warren and Hopkins use in their work in order to demonstrate human connectedness to each other and nature in the form of what could be called a mystic unity. Integral to this meditative process is Hopkins’ idiosyncratic concepts of “inscape” and “instress,” which are defined and explored by the author while demonstrating how Warren’s work is in dialogue with these concepts, particularly in his 1968 collection of poems, Incarnations.

The Golems Take New York: The Resurgence Of The Golem In The Work Of Cynthia Ozick And Thane Rosenbaum, Peter Schulman Jan 2012

The Golems Take New York: The Resurgence Of The Golem In The Work Of Cynthia Ozick And Thane Rosenbaum, Peter Schulman

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The late twentieth and early twenty first centuries have seen a resurgence of the golem in several major American novels. What factors might lead to such a re-imagining of the golem in American fiction? Cynthia Ozick's The Puttermesser Papers (1997) and Thane Rosenbaum's The Golems of Gotham (2002) re-invent golems no longer anchored in vengeance but in healing, as vehicles for the kabbalistic notion of Tikkun Olam ("repairing the world"). Ozick creates the first female golem to help the lonely protagonist become a reformist mayor; in The Golems of Gotham, the golem is transformed into a team of literary …

Beyond Search: A Technology Probe Investigation, Erin M. Bryant, R. Harper, P. Gossett

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

Purpose — We assert that researchers developing new web interaction tools should consider an array of user motives beyond query-based information retrieval. This chapter reports on two probes used to investigate user activities that go beyond search as traditionally conceived.

Design/methodology — This chapter reviews research on user experiences with search engines and general web use. It then describes the design and case study of cards and pebbles, two search engine-based probes developed to help elicit new concepts for web-based experiences.

Findings — Participants reflect on their experiences with the probes and offer ideas regarding how to incrementally shift the …

Appendix Iv: Potmarks, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

I. Potmarks from the Limassol area tombs

The excavation of any Late Cypriote site settlement, tomb, shipwreck usually yields pottery marked with incised, impressed, or painted signs. The collection of marked pottery presented here is significant especially because it fills in the heretofore geographic lacuna between the substantial assemblages of Late Cypriote potmarks discovered in the Kouris (Smith 2012) and Vasilikos (E. Masson 1989; Cadogan, Driessen, and Ferrara 2009, 145) River Valleys. Smith has demonstrated how much marked pottery, considered in the context of other indications of administrative control, can reveal about the administrative, economic, and political organization of a …

In Defence Of Higher-Order Musical Ontology: A Reply To Lee B. Brown, Andrew Kania Jan 2012

In Defence Of Higher-Order Musical Ontology: A Reply To Lee B. Brown, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

In a recent article in this journal, Lee B. Brown criticizes one central kind of project in higher-order musical ontology—the project of offering an ontological theory of a particular musical tradition. I defend this kind of project by replying to Brown’s critique, arguing that musical practices are not untheorizably messy, and that a suitably subtle descriptivist ontology of a given practice can be valuable both theoretically and practically.

A Musical Photograph?, Richard Beaudoin, Andrew Kania Jan 2012

A Musical Photograph?, Richard Beaudoin, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

This article compares two objects: a photographic negative made by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1835 and the score of a solo piano work composed by Richard Beaudoin in 2009. Talbot’s negative has come to be known as Latticed Window (with the Camera Obscura), August 1835, and Beaudoin’s musical composition is called Étude d’un prélude VII—Latticed Window. As suggested by their titles, the composition owes a debt to the negative and thereby joins a long list of musical compositions indebted to particular visual images. However, the relationship is deeper, and by explicating their respective ontologies, we hope …

Concepts Of Pornography: Aesthetics, Feminism, And Methodology, Andrew Kania Jan 2012

Concepts Of Pornography: Aesthetics, Feminism, And Methodology, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

There are two broadly philosophical literatures on pornography. By far the largest is concerned with moral issues raised by pornography. This literature falls into two phases. The first phase comprises the debate between moral conservatives, who objected to pornography on the grounds of its explicit sexual nature, and liberals, who defended pornography on grounds of something like freedom of speech or expression. Though this debate is not stone cold, the liberals seem to have won it. However, it has been largely replaced by a different one between feminists who object to pornography on the basis that it contributes to the …

The Recovery Of Archaic Truth In Literature: Light And Darkness In The Perception Of Space In The Human Imagination, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2012

The Recovery Of Archaic Truth In Literature: Light And Darkness In The Perception Of Space In The Human Imagination, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

While the appeal of both inner and outer space of world and consciousness presents an inexhaustible source for the artist and writer, primitive memories remain in the archaic makeup of human beings that continue to haunt as well as enchant the human mind. The archaic mind is evident not only in the once-upon-a-time of fairy tales, but in the acute awareness of existence itself—the closest we can get to the first order experience of the human creature to the wonder and terror of its birthing reality. This essay considers both ancient myth and reflective imagination in the work of modern …

Combinatorial-State Automata And Models Of Computation, Curtis Brown Jan 2012

Combinatorial-State Automata And Models Of Computation, Curtis Brown

Philosophy Faculty Research

David Chalmers has defended an account of what it is for a physical system to implement a computation. The account appeals to the idea of a “combinatorial-state automaton” or CSA. It is not entirely clear whether Chalmers intends the CSA to be a full-blown computational model, or merely a convenient formalism into which instances of other models can be translated. I argue that the CSA is not a computational model in the usual sense because CSAs do not perspicuously represent algorithms, and because they are too powerful both in that they can perform any computation in a single step and …
