Predicting Breast Cancer Screening Among African American Lesbians And Bisexual Women, Cheryl B. Fields
Predicting Breast Cancer Screening Among African American Lesbians And Bisexual Women, Cheryl B. Fields
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2009, 713,220 new cases of cancer were diagnosed for women in the United States with more than a quarter million deaths. African American women and lesbians exhibit behavioral risk factors as well as diminished access to and utilization of breast cancer screening that reduces opportunities for early detection. This secondary analysis of a national convenience-based study examined screening compliance among 647 African American lesbian and bisexual women. Barriers to accessing screening represented the theoretical framework for this study. Bivariate chi square analysis was used to assess the association between independent variables: sociodemographic characteristics; participation in wellness activities; sexual orientation/gender …
The Utility Of Restorative Justice In Urban Communities For Afro Americans Males 12-17, Johnny Brooks
The Utility Of Restorative Justice In Urban Communities For Afro Americans Males 12-17, Johnny Brooks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Juvenile delinquency continues to be a major social problem in the United States. One of the more salient problems with the juvenile justice system in the United States is its staggering incarceration rate, which poses a significant problem for youth exposed to the juvenile justice system, and the community as a whole. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the perspective of the program facilitators about the effectiveness of the restorative justice program in reducing recidivism for African American males aged 12 to 17 in Baltimore City's urban community. This study relied upon restorative justice theory as …
The Relationship Between The Associated Symptoms Of First Nation Peoples' Historical Losses And Organizational Commitment In The Canadian Workplace, Justin W. Wilson
The Relationship Between The Associated Symptoms Of First Nation Peoples' Historical Losses And Organizational Commitment In The Canadian Workplace, Justin W. Wilson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have found that minorities suffering from traumatic stress report increased levels of stress in the absence of supportive and committed work environments; however, a paucity of empirical research exists for First Nations Peoples (FNP). The purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to examine the nature of the relationship between FNP's associated symptoms of historical loss, assessed by the Historical Loss and Associated Symptoms Scale, and organizational commitment, as measured by the Three Component Employee Commitment Survey. A total of 118 residential school survivors completed surveys. Correlation analysis was used to determine the significance of historical loss in relation …
Effects Of Religious Motivation On The Relationship Between Religion And Well-Being, Wayne Gilbey
Effects Of Religious Motivation On The Relationship Between Religion And Well-Being, Wayne Gilbey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to examine whether intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest religious motivations mediate the relationship between the religious philosophy and perceived well-being of believers. The intrinsic-extrinsic-quest paradigm has been the dominant measure of religious motivation for more than 3 decades. However, the different effects of intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest motivation on the well-being of believers has not been tested on a stratified, purposeful sample of the major world religions. A quantitative, quasi-experimental research design was used with an online, self-report questionnaire and mediation analysis to examine the effects of religious motivation on the relationship between religious philosophy …
Conquest, Colonization, And The Cross: Religious Aspects Of The Conquest And Colonization Of Honduras, Chad Mccutchen
Conquest, Colonization, And The Cross: Religious Aspects Of The Conquest And Colonization Of Honduras, Chad Mccutchen
History Theses - Archive
Religiosity pervades the conquest and colonization of Honduras. The secular church, the missionaries, and the colonial aristocracy all played vital roles in the process. The Hispanic social consciousness emerged out of the Reconquista which allowed a fusion of religiosity and conquest, and this psyche manifested in the New World. Spain became equally dependent on the sanctioning of the Catholic Church to justify their enterprises in the Americas. However, the extreme poverty in Honduras created a unique situation in which the ecclesiastics depended on the local mining economy to survive. Therefore the clergy in Honduras struggled to balance their economic pursuits …
The Trick Of The Tale: Deconstructing Johann Weyer's De Praestigiis Daemonum, James Robert Allen
The Trick Of The Tale: Deconstructing Johann Weyer's De Praestigiis Daemonum, James Robert Allen
History Theses - Archive
This thesis is an intellectual history of early modern European beliefs in witchcraft. Most research and scholarship on this period has focused on understanding the “witch hunts” and the collective phenomenon known as the witchcraze. Historians have focused more the social and political conditions that contributed to witch-hunting. These studies have tended to focus on the institutions that existed to facilitate witchcraft prosecutions. Comparatively, the writings of “demonologists” or intellectuals during the early modern period have been studied to a lesser extent.1 Early modern authors like Johann Weyer are often interpreted as either a skeptic or believer in witchcraft. Most …
Moving Beyond This Moment: Employing Deleuze And Guattari's Rhizome In Postcolonialism, Robert Larue
Moving Beyond This Moment: Employing Deleuze And Guattari's Rhizome In Postcolonialism, Robert Larue
English Theses - Archive
The aim of this project is two-fold: to discuss the limits of Frantz Fanon's postcolonial theories, and to then present a possible model for turning "the `thing' colonized [into] a new man" (Wretched 2) by liberating "him" from Fanon's desire for inclusion. Or, to put this in other terms, this investigation seeks to highlight one of the most limiting factors in Fanonian postcolonial theory: Fanon's grounding in European humanism. The goal is not to criticize Fanon's theories, but to point out the limits of them so that these limits can be addressed in order to further the theories' effectiveness. By …

Sleeping Beauty: The Reality Of Harmful Images Of Women Within The Film Industry, Noretta A. Morales
Whittier Scholars Program
This senior project is composed of three parts: a screenplay, essay, and journal. The purpose of this senior project is to provide a perspective of how women are treated within the film industry and women’s obsession with beauty and sexuality, as well as how the media portrays women. It focuses on the pressures that women deal with in the film industry and the construction of beauty and sexuality concepts. Drawing from articles, journals, books, and interviews, the project attempts to provide the various sides and aspects of how women give in, or not, to the stress of conforming to the …
Organizing For Latinos In Los Angeles, Donna Orozco
Organizing For Latinos In Los Angeles, Donna Orozco
Whittier Scholars Program
Union membership and organizing has declined nationwide since 1983, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics first began collecting data on union membership. I found that while union membership has been decreasing nationwide, in Los Angeles, unions have been more successful in terms of organizing members starting with the Justice for Janitors Campaign of the 1980’s. In order to explain why Los Angeles has had better union membership rates, I will discuss the structural organization and strategies unions in Los Angeles have adopted. Unions in Los Angeles have structured themselves to involve working with community groups, worker centers, begins directly with …

The history of bathing suits reflects enormous change in social norms and moves over the last century. Bathing attire for both men and women have evolved at different paces. HIstorically men swam in the nude, while women rarely ever wore swimsuits or swam. Women were typically found strolling down the beach shores dressed in a tunic, the basic swimwear of the 1800’s. Throughout the modern design history of swimwear, there have been two major types of garments for women, the one-piece and the two-piece. The one-piece swimsuit consisted of a tunic complimented by a woven skirt. This one-piece garment made …

Technologies Of Apprehension: The Family, Law, Security, And Geopolitics In Us Noncitizen Family Detention Policy And Practice, Lauren Leigh Martin
Technologies Of Apprehension: The Family, Law, Security, And Geopolitics In Us Noncitizen Family Detention Policy And Practice, Lauren Leigh Martin
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines how US immigrant family detention policy emerged from reinvigorated border security priorities, immigration policing practices, and international migration flows. Based on a qualitative mixed methods approach, the research traces how discourses of threat, vulnerability, and safety produce detainable child and parent subjects that displace “the family” as a legal entity. I show that immigration law relies on specific kinds of geographical knowledge, producing what I call the ‘geopolitics of vulnerability.’ More broadly, I analyze how current immigration enforcement practices work at local, national, and international scales, so that detention deters future migration as much as it penalizes …
Seeing Subjects: Recognition, Identity, And Visual Cultures In Literary Modernism, George Micajah Phillips
Seeing Subjects: Recognition, Identity, And Visual Cultures In Literary Modernism, George Micajah Phillips
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Seeing Subjects plots a literary history of modern Britain that begins with Dorian Gray obsessively inspecting his portrait’s changes and ends in Virginia Woolf’s visit to the cinema where she found audiences to be “savages watching the pictures.” Focusing on how literature in the late-19th and 20th centuries regarded images as possessing a shaping force over how identities are understood and performed, I argue that modernists in Britain felt mediated images were altering, rather than merely representing, British identity. As Britain’s economy expanded to unprecedented imperial reach and global influence, new visual technologies also made it possible to …
The Church In Africa: Salt Of The Earth?, Joseph Ogbonnaya
The Church In Africa: Salt Of The Earth?, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This book is an attempt at a critical, constructive, and creative theological praxis of social transformation in Africa. The authors apply a multi-disciplinary approach to examining how Christianity in Africa is engaging the problems of Africa's challenging social context. This is a prophetic work that applies the symbols of "salt" and "light" as ecclesiological images for reenvisioning the path towards procuring abundant life for God's people in the African continent through the agency of African Christianity. The contributors to this volume ask these fundamental questions: What is the face of Jesus in African Christianity? What is the face and identity …

The Systemic Erasure Of The Black/Dark-Skinned Body In Catholic Ethics, Bryan Massingale
The Systemic Erasure Of The Black/Dark-Skinned Body In Catholic Ethics, Bryan Massingale
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
One of the questions I address in my scholarly work is this: What would Catholic theological ethics look like if it took the "Black Experience" seriously as a dialogue partner? To raise the question, however, is to signal the reality of absence, erasure, and "missing" voices. The question is necessary only because the "Black Experience"--the collective story of African American survival and achievement in a hostile, exploitative, and racist environment--and the bodies who are the subjects of this experience have been all too often rendered invisible and therefore "missing" in U.S. Catholic ethical reflection.

Levels-Of-Processing Effects On "Remember" Responses In Recognition For Familiar And Unfamiliar Tunes, Esra Mungan, Zehra F. Peynircioğlu, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Journal Articles
We investigated the effect of level-of-processing manipulations on "remember" and "know" responses in episodic melody recognition (Experiments 1 and 2) and how this effect is modulated by item familiarity (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, participants performed 2 conceptual and 2 perceptual orienting tasks while listening to familiar melodies: judging the mood, continuing the tune, tracing the pitch contour, and counting long notes. The conceptual mood task led to higher d' rates for "remember" but not "know" responses. In Experiment 2, participants either judged the mood or counted long notes of tunes with high and low familiarity. A level-of-processing effect emerged …

Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg
Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Informed by the theories of Henri Lefebvre regarding the production of space and the theories of scale found in current scholarship in Cultural Geography, my methodology analyzes both dramatic texts and theater spaces to investigate how cultural production and capital converge in the “spectacle” of urban space. While employing this term “spectacle” to describe how dramatic texts, theater productions, and modern architecture transform the urban landscape into a metaphoric theater space for the production of local, national, and global identities, this project examines the relationship between theater and urban change in Lavapiés, an iconic, multicultural, and oftenunderserved neighborhood located in …

The Multiple Identities Of Azerbaijan, Babajide George Iloba
The Multiple Identities Of Azerbaijan, Babajide George Iloba
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper focuses on the emerging Azerbaijani identity and its competing articulations in the Republic of Azerbaijan, in Iran, and in Diaspora. The northern Republic of Azerbaijan has a population of over 8 million people, the majority of whom have different social and political experiences than over 30 million Azeris in the South, or in Iranian Azerbaijan. However, there are formidable historical, socio-cultural, ethnic, and linguistic ties that bind all Azerbaijanis together as one people. This necessity of coming together finds its highest expression in Diaspora and among the Azeri émigrés. In the process, the Azeri Diaspora experiences a host …

Turkish Language In Iran (From The Ghaznavid Empire To The End Of The Safavid Dynasty), Zivar Huseynova
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
It is well known that throughout History/ Archaeology Persians and Turks have been collecting within the same nation in states of peace and war and creating empires under the names of various dynasties. There are many sources giving evidence to the fact that Turks lived and ruled in these lands. In the article we will give information about the status of the Turkish language exclusively during the period of time from the Ghaznavid Empire until the end of the Safavid Empire. Beginning by the Ghaznavid government in 961, in later centuries the Kharazms, Seljuks, Teymuris, Elkhans, Aq Koyunlus, Kara Koyunlus, …

As secretary of a Swedish delegation to the court of Shah Sulaimān, Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) travelled through what is today Azərbaycan for 77 days. He stayed in Scha- machi/Şamaxı, the former capital of the Persian province of Šervān, for four weeks, including his visit to Bakı and the oil fields of Apsheron – this report (Lemgo 1712) is well known. Not so well known are details of his stay in Scha- machi; his diary and his liber amicorum (auto- graph book with five entries from Schamachi, in five languages; not shown before) give the names of seven or eight of …
Romanian Immigrant Travel Routes To America, Mihaela Mudure
Romanian Immigrant Travel Routes To America, Mihaela Mudure
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper claims the existence of various immigrant travel routes in American literature. The literary argumentation relies on Domnica Radulescu and her first novel Train to Trieste and on Alta Ifland‘s collection of short stories Elegy for a Fabulous Land. Both writers were born in Romania and were confronted with totalitarianism and its impositions upon individual identity. Travel and mobility have shaped the identities of these two writers in decisive ways which draw the contours of an emerging hyphenated ethnic literature: Romanian-American literature.
