Access Denied: The Rhetorical Construction Of Undocumented Students In Postsecondary Education, Yanira Estrada Figueroa

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis analyzes rhetorically the 1982 Supreme Court case Plyer v. Doe, sections of the Welfare Reform Act and the Illegal Immigratiom Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, and the 2011 version of the proposed Development, Relief and Education for Minors (Dream Act) in order to trace the underlying beliefs and assumptions that justify refusing undocumented students support for and thus access to postsecondary institutions.

Liberation Is Not Always So Liberating: Rethinking Paulo Freire's Critical Pedagogy For The Writing Classroom, Joshua Daniel Shinn Jan 2011

Liberation Is Not Always So Liberating: Rethinking Paulo Freire's Critical Pedagogy For The Writing Classroom, Joshua Daniel Shinn

Theses Digitization Project

The goal of this project is to reconsider the ways in which liberatory and/or critical pedagogy, and its desire to combat the "banking" method of education, can unintentionally create some of the same institutional and ideologically oppressive classroom conditions that more traditional methods of instruction have been charged with creating. This thesis first discusses the origins of liberatory pedagogy and its effect upon education, the writing classroom, and critical pedagogues.

This Is Not A Love Story: A Semiotic Discourse Analysis Of Romantic Comedies, Stephanie Lynn Gomez Jan 2011

This Is Not A Love Story: A Semiotic Discourse Analysis Of Romantic Comedies, Stephanie Lynn Gomez

Theses Digitization Project

This study is an examination of the ideologies present in the highest-grossing romantic comedy from each year in the past decade. Because romantic comedies feature prominent romantic relationships, repeated exposure to romantic comedies may influence audiences' perceptions of what romantic relationships should be like. People who are exposed to media content depicting romantic relationships may rely on those portrayals when they are either considering beginning a new romantic relationship, or evaluating a current romantic relationship.

Institutions, The Rise Of Commerce And The Persistence Of Laws: Interest Restrictions In Islam And Christianity, Jared Rubin Jan 2011

Institutions, The Rise Of Commerce And The Persistence Of Laws: Interest Restrictions In Islam And Christianity, Jared Rubin

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Why was economic development retarded in the Middle East relative to Western Europe, despite the Middle East being far ahead for centuries? A theoretical model inspired and substantiated by the history of interest restrictions suggests that this outcome emanates in part from the greater degree to which early Islamic political authorities derived legitimacy from religious authorities. This entailed a feedback mechanism in Europe in which the rise of commerce led to the relaxation of interest restrictions while also diminishing the Church's ability to legitimise political authorities. These interactions did not occur in the Islamic world despite equally amenable economic conditions.

Reading, Writing, And Religion: Institutions And Human Capital Formation, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin Jan 2011

Reading, Writing, And Religion: Institutions And Human Capital Formation, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we empirically test the role that religious and political institutions play in the accumulation of human capital. Using a new data set on literacy in colonial India, we find that Muslim literacy is negatively correlated with the proportion of Muslims in the district, although we find no similar result for Hindu literacy. We employ a theoretical model which suggests that districts which experienced a more recent collapse of Muslim political authority had more powerful and better funded religious authorities, who established religious schools which were less effective at promoting literacy on the margin than state schools. We …

Le Mélange Of Francophone Culture In William Wells Brown’S Clotel, Sandra Andrade Jan 2011

Le Mélange Of Francophone Culture In William Wells Brown’S Clotel, Sandra Andrade

Undergraduate Review

In Clotel; Or, The President’s Daughter, William Wells Brown argues that for fugitive African American slaves France represented freedom. This connection between African Americans and France that is familiar to many Americans in the twentieth century was existent at the time of Brown’s own escape. The Francophone culture became a major motivator in the author’s personal life and also in his writings. This project covers many themes, including the “tragic mulatta”, American identity, American freedom and slavery, and explores readings from Anna Brickhouse’s Transamerican Literary Relations and the Nineteenth-Century Public Sphere, and Eve A. Raimon’s The Tragic Mulatta …

The Ethical Significance Of The Aesthetic Experience Of Non-Representational Art, Taylor Rogers Jan 2011

The Ethical Significance Of The Aesthetic Experience Of Non-Representational Art, Taylor Rogers

Honors Papers

This paper’s aim is to give an account of the distinctive ethical significance of the aesthetic experience of non-representational art. It demonstrates how perceptual skills necessary for such engagement prove to be ethical as well as aesthetic skills. First, some background on the nature of aesthetic experience, before Noël Carroll’s content-oriented account is adopted. After clarifying the notion of “aesthetic experience,” the paper’s focus on non-representational art is explained, illustrating the way in which it more accessibly fosters pure aesthetic experience, as opposed to art that is representational. By employing the terms ‘non-representational’ and ‘representational,’ paradigm cases of each sort …

The Beijing University Student Movement In The Hundred Flowers Campaign In 1957, Yidi Wu Jan 2011

The Beijing University Student Movement In The Hundred Flowers Campaign In 1957, Yidi Wu

Honors Papers

Student activism in twentieth-century China has been a widely researched subject since the 1989 Tiananmen protests. However, little is known about Beijing University student movement in the Hundred Flowers Campaign in 1957, especially in English language sources. Based on posters and speeches from the movement, as well as student memoirs, this study situates the movement in a historical framework, and specifically looks at repertoires, organizations, framings, political opportunities and constraints, and reflections of the movement.

Living The Martial Way, Blair Schur Jan 2011

Living The Martial Way, Blair Schur

Senior Theses

In this thesis, I will examine what the idea of a warrior entails, looking at its ethical facets, as well as its historical development, particularly in the East, since this is where the values which seek cultivation are best preserved. I conclude that a warrior is a person who seeks knowledge and the betterment of themselves through honorable virtues. Section two looks at what it means to be a warrior, whereas section three focuses on the different philosophies that constitute the mentality of a warrior. This continues to section four, where I examine how to apply the mindset of a …

A Mind For Language: How Language Shapes Our Reality, Eric Tompkins Jan 2011

A Mind For Language: How Language Shapes Our Reality, Eric Tompkins

Senior Theses

To write of language is an unusual activity, for it is to describe something by, through, and with itself. This thesis not only defends the view advanced by Sapir and Whorf of linguistic relativism, but extends their thesis with an application of Heidegger, and conflates the terms of language and self. Ultimately, I believe this endeavor is one which is not successful, but which also yields significant implications for further thought on the philosophical relevance of linguistic relativism.

Section two presents some initial thoughts on language and self; the third section describes the terms of language, whereas the fourth one …

El Derecho Para Decir “Sí, Quiero”: El Movimiento Lgbtq En Los Ee.Uu., España, Y La Argentina, Jamila A. Humphrie

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

This Honors Project reflects my four years of experiences as a student of the Hispanic Studies Department. The project incorporates my experience and research conducted during my study abroad experience in Argentina, Spanish, and critical study and theory. Throughout the project, I examine the dichotomy between assimilation and liberation as a framework for the LGBTQ movement, and the commonalities in the histories of the three countries. My thesis states that: as a result of globalization and what I call the transatlantic trade of ideas, the LGBTQ movements in Spain, Argentina and the U.S. have all adapted a limited and ultimately …

Aristotle, Performativity, And Perfect Friendship In Shakespeare, Ryan Engley Jan 2011

Aristotle, Performativity, And Perfect Friendship In Shakespeare, Ryan Engley

Undergraduate Review

From childhood, most of us have been taught that our “identity,” both how we see ourselves and how others see us, is shaped at least in part by our friends: “you are the company you keep,” as the cliché goes. Experience will teach us that not all friendships are the same, much less equal, even if we never hear of Aristotle and his tripartite scale of friend-types. His categories were of course born of the classical world but, true to fashion, remain valuable barometers for measuring individual identity and desire in friendships. They’re useful, too, in understanding Shakespeare’s characters and …

Bite Me: Twilight Stakes Feminism, Lauren Rocha Jan 2011

Bite Me: Twilight Stakes Feminism, Lauren Rocha

Undergraduate Review

In my Honors Thesis, Things That Go Bump in the Night: Vampires and Feminism, I develop a feminist critique of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series (2005-2008). I use Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula (1897), Sheridan LeFanu’s novella Carmilla (1872), and Joss Whedon’s television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) in order to highlight Twilight’s domestication of female identity against these other vampire texts. I argue that throughout these vampire works there is a shift in the representation of vampires towards a more domesticated, or self-controlled, vampire that is seen in Twilight. This domesticity not only applies to vampires, however, as …
