The Deep Ecology Movement: Origins, Development, And Future Prospects (Toward A Transpersonal Ecosophy), Alan Drengson, Bill Devall, Mark A. Schroll Jan 2011

The Deep Ecology Movement: Origins, Development, And Future Prospects (Toward A Transpersonal Ecosophy), Alan Drengson, Bill Devall, Mark A. Schroll

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The deep ecology movement, which began with Arne Naess’ introduction of the term in

1972, is compared with other movements for social responsibility that developed in the

20th century. The paper discusses Naess’ cross-cultural approach to characterizing grassroots

movements via platform principles that can be supported from a diversity of cultures,

worldviews, and personal philosophies, and explains his use of “ecosophy.” The deep ecology

movement’s relationship with ecopsychology, ecocriticism, and humanistic and transpersonal

psychology is described as part of an emerging synthesis referred to as transpersonal ecosophy.

The inquiry concludes with a technical discussion of Naess’ Apron Diagram and reflections …

Jung At The Foot Of Mount Kailash: A Transpersonal Synthesis Of Depth Psychology, Tibetan Tantra, And The Sacred Mythic Imagery Of East And West, Judson Davis Jan 2011

Jung At The Foot Of Mount Kailash: A Transpersonal Synthesis Of Depth Psychology, Tibetan Tantra, And The Sacred Mythic Imagery Of East And West, Judson Davis

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Tibetan Buddhist Tantra and Jungian depth psychology represent two of the world’s more

dynamic psycho-spiritual traditions. This comparative study explores their respective

insights, cosmologies, and often striking similarities, with particular emphasis on the

manner in which mythic imagery is employed in both disciplines as a powerful agent

of healing and transformation. The ontological status of Tibetan deities and archetypal

entities is also given careful consideration, especially in relation to the phenomena of

psychic projection and autonomous spiritual dimensions.

Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment For Incarcerated Youth: A Mixed Method Pilot Study, Sam Himelstein Jan 2011

Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment For Incarcerated Youth: A Mixed Method Pilot Study, Sam Himelstein

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The current study investigated the effects of an 8-week mindfulness-based substance use intervention

on self-reported impulsiveness, perceived drug risk, and healthy self-regulation in a sample of 60

incarcerated youth. Forty-eight participants completed questionnaires pre and post intervention.

Additionally, 16 participants from two of the final 8-week cohorts were interviewed in focus groups

about their experience of the program immediately following its completion. A mixed-method

embedded model was used, in which qualitative data was used in support of quantitative data. Paired

t-tests revealed a significant decrease (p < .01) in impulsiveness and a significant increase (p < .05)

in perceived risk of drug use from pretest to posttest. No …

Connectedness And Environmental Behavior: Sense Of Interconnectedness And Pro-Environmental Behavior, Robert E. Hoot, Harris Friedman Jan 2011

Connectedness And Environmental Behavior: Sense Of Interconnectedness And Pro-Environmental Behavior, Robert E. Hoot, Harris Friedman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The expansion of one’s sense of identity to include various aspects of the world, both human

and non-human, may relate to how one treats the world. This sense of interconnectedness

can be domain specific, as through identification with nature and the future, or very

general, as through an expanded transpersonal identification with all of reality unlimited

by time and space. This study explored the relationship between these two specific and

the more general type of interconnectedness on environmental beliefs and behavior. A

sample of 210 participants completed a battery of interconnectedness measures, including

two specific measures, the Connectedness to Nature …

Combating Anti Anti-Luck Epistemology, Brent J C Madison Jan 2011

Combating Anti Anti-Luck Epistemology, Brent J C Madison

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

One thing that nearly all epistemologists agree upon is that Gettier cases are decisive counterexamples to the tripartite analysis of knowledge; whatever else is true of knowledge, it is not merely belief that is both justified and true. They now agree that knowledge is not justified true belief because this is consistent with there being too much luck present in the cases, and that knowledge excludes such luck. This is to endorse what has become known as the ‘anti-luck platitude’.

But what if generations of philosophers have been mistaken about this, blinded at least partially by a deeply entrenched professional …

Integration Of Visual Art For Small Worshipping Communities, Angela M. Mccarthy Jan 2011

Integration Of Visual Art For Small Worshipping Communities, Angela M. Mccarthy

Theology Conference Papers

A difficulty for small worshipping communities is having the resources and personnel to provide suitable enervating opportunities for reflection on the Word during worship that enriches and enlivens their community action. Research has shown that interaction with visual imagery assists contemplation and integration of text and will therefore assist those gathered to consider the Scripture of the day.

Visual imagery in art has been neglected as a source of theology and hence the vocabulary needed to ‘read’ the artworks relevant to Scripture will have to be re-learnt. This paper will provide an understanding of how visual arts can augment Scriptural …

On The Genealogy Of Creativity, Camilla Nelson Jan 2011

On The Genealogy Of Creativity, Camilla Nelson

Arts Conference Papers

There are few English nouns that have generated such relentlessly good publicity as the word ‘creativity’. It is increasingly found scattered across the literature of the arts and sciences, industry, business management, information technology, education and government. It has been called the key to economic growth, the ‘decisive source of competitive advantage’, and the ‘very heart’ of ‘wealth creation and social renewal’. It is also a burgeoning object of study in the humanities, where it is increasingly applied across spheres and disciplines, most notably in the new interdisciplinary schools of Creative Industries, as well as in the mainstream of the …

Two Poems, Nancy Scott Jan 2011

Two Poems, Nancy Scott

On Earth As It Is

The glue holding the kitchen chair legs

is gone; dried in some season

I didn't see coming or going

and the windows need washing again.

For You, Adam Jordan Jan 2011

For You, Adam Jordan

On Earth As It Is

I checked the bush. I tried the sky, the crickets' legs, soccer fields, and apples' cores. I stoodunder thunderclouds, kitchen counters, catechism teachers inside superstores. I studied Crusoe's isolation after Harold and the Purple Crayon.

After Eden, Tracey S. Rosenberg Jan 2011

After Eden, Tracey S. Rosenberg

On Earth As It Is

Why are you laughing as you send me away? I'm not done.

There are fresh grasses I want to roll in,

buzzing fizzing fairies to chase like a spring kitten

(I promise to set them free, every last one).

When you let me come in, there was no one else you wanted.

Two Poems, Danniel Schoonebeek Jan 2011

Two Poems, Danniel Schoonebeek

On Earth As It Is

The word for what you want from me is novena, which means

nine days I will shave your beard and tell you: what falls

wants to rest with what falls, which is why your beard

wants to rest with the leaves in the trash bag, and why

when the leaves fall, what you want is to rest with me.

Grace, Brooks Sterritt Jan 2011

Grace, Brooks Sterritt

On Earth As It Is

At the table, ready to eat. I hope they don’t ask me to bless the food. They do. “Be present at our table…” Nervous. Can they hear doubt in my voice? Everpresent, effervescent Lord, we beseech thee to pencil us in for a brief moment of conscience-assuagement and dietary protection. “...be here and everywhere adored...” How great thou art: here, there, and everywhere, hence it should be effortless to come down, enter into my consciousness for a yoctosecond.

Dear God, Barbara Shoup Jan 2011

Dear God, Barbara Shoup

On Earth As It Is

Dear God,

Okay, first, full disclosure: I don’t believe You are a You.

Of course, if I’m wrong and You are a You, You already know this—and everything else, for that matter. And if You really are the all powerful You so many people imagine, the one with long white hair sitting on a throne in heaven (wherever that is), maybe You’ve got Your finger raised right now, pondering whether to unleash that lightning bolt and smite me for being insubordinate.

The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson Jan 2011

The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

The vast majority of care for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is provided by skilled (but not formally educated) paraprofessional technicians. Using Goffman's (1959) framing of the performance of self in everyday discourse, this study examines discourse from dialysis technicians and technical aides to explore these paraprofessionals' construction and performance of professional identity and professional communication within the context of an outpatient dialysis clinic. Themes of professionalism—individualized care, vigilance, teamwork, and emotion management—are illustrated via poetic transcription of interviews with technicians. I contend that such representation offers validity equal to that of traditional research accounts while embodying alternative representational strengths.

Divergent Responses To The Human Predicament: A Case Study In New Comparativism, Mark Toole Jan 2011

Divergent Responses To The Human Predicament: A Case Study In New Comparativism, Mark Toole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The enterprise of comparison has been regarded by some as one of the most vital characteristics of a healthy academic study of religion. However, the failed legacy of Eliadian Comparativism has caused others to suggest that the art of comparison has not yet lived up to its promise. This study brings together the best tools of what the author calls "Smithian New Comparativism." In order to demonstrate concretely a rigorous and responsible critical comparative analysis, and to chart a course for future academically beneficial cross-cultural comparisons, this project presents a case study that compares two religious traditions' doctrinal responses to …

The Role Of Reflective Judgment In The Relationship Between Religious Orientation And Prejudice, Alison Cook Jan 2011

The Role Of Reflective Judgment In The Relationship Between Religious Orientation And Prejudice, Alison Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in the psychology of religion over the past five decades has found that religious individuals tend to be more prejudiced than those who are not religious. In addition, research has identified various orientations to religion, each having a unique relationship to prejudice. The purpose of this study was to explore whether cognitive complexity, as defined by the Reflective Judgment Model (RJM), might emerge as a predictor both of religious orientation and of prejudice, thereby explaining the variability in the relationships between religious orientation and prejudice. While a relationship between cognitive complexity, religious orientation, and prejudice has been theorized (Hunsberger …

Survivor Song: The Voice Of Trauma And Its Echoes, Jennifer Rinaldi Jan 2011

Survivor Song: The Voice Of Trauma And Its Echoes, Jennifer Rinaldi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For societies and cultures that experience mass torture and trauma, giving voice to the story of what happened is significant for both the specific individuals who have survived or witnessed the trauma, and the culture that is forced to process it and incorporate the experience into its collective identity. Testimonial literature that resulted from the detention and torture of desaparecidos under the military dictatorship in Argentina in the 1970s and 80s, and the genocide of the Armenian people in 1915, reveals many different approaches in the ways that people write about torture and trauma. In attempting to find a voice …

A Burkean Analysis Of Anti-Immigration Websites: Recurring Scapegoating Rhetorical Moves, Aldo Quiroz Lewis Jan 2011

A Burkean Analysis Of Anti-Immigration Websites: Recurring Scapegoating Rhetorical Moves, Aldo Quiroz Lewis

Theses Digitization Project

There are numerous websites emphasizing the idea that immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants from Latin American countries, are to blame for the decline of the United States. What allows these sites to be so persuasive is that they created a united U.S. front by erasing the differences between different groups, thereby construcing a united "American" identity. At the same time, in opposition to this identity, the sites created an 'illegal' that groups Hispanics. This author argues that attempts to discuss immigration have more to do with enacting a scapegoat that may be blamed for America's ills.

To Speak Or Not To Speak: The Implications Of Silence In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Margaret Rose Jones Jan 2011

To Speak Or Not To Speak: The Implications Of Silence In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Margaret Rose Jones

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis explores the function and importance of silence throughout William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Along with analysis of Shakespeare's text, this thesis also reviews and analyzes three film versions of the play: Laurence Olivier's 1948 production, Kenneth Branagh's 1996 production, and Michael Almereyda's 2000 production. All of these showcase various depictions of silence while working with the same Shakespearian text and plotline. Throughout the text and film analyses this thesis explores three areas in which silence plays an important role: refusal to join a conversation, emotional distress rendering someone silent, and societal limitations placed on the individual. This thesis attempts …
