Relationships Among Music Listening, Temperament, And Cognitive Abilities Of Four-Year-Old Children, John W. Flohr, Diane C. Persellin, Daniel C. Miller, Harry Meeuwsen Jan 2011

Relationships Among Music Listening, Temperament, And Cognitive Abilities Of Four-Year-Old Children, John W. Flohr, Diane C. Persellin, Daniel C. Miller, Harry Meeuwsen

Music Faculty Research

The purpose of the study was twofold: (a) to investigate electrophysiological (EEG) responses in children while listening to two contrasting styles of music, and (b) to investigate the relationship between listening to recorded music and the cognitive abilities of four-year-old children. EEG data were collected on a baseline condition of eyes open. These data were then compared to EEG data produced when children listened to selections of music by Bach, while they listened to selections of rock music, and while they performed a standardized cognitive test of visual closure. Behavioral data were also collected on sex, age, home environment, and …

Transnational Transgressions: Multidisciplinary Approaches To Global Mexican Cultural Productions, Rosana Blanco Cano, Rita Urquijo-Ruiz Jan 2011

Transnational Transgressions: Multidisciplinary Approaches To Global Mexican Cultural Productions, Rosana Blanco Cano, Rita Urquijo-Ruiz

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The city of San Antonio, Texas, historically has maintained close artis-tic, political, social, and economic relations with Mexico. Because it embodies the complexity of transcultural and transnational exchanges in everyday life, in 2008 it became the site of a series of academic and artistic exchanges, out of which this text on global Mexican cultural productions emerges. A variety of artistic and theoretical perspectives were conceptualized to reflect the multiple transcultural dynamics of San Antonio and also other transnational Mexican areas physically and metaphorically located on both sides of the border.

The Devil Was The First Scab : Working-Class Spirituality And Union Organization In Marion County, West Virginia 1918-1927, Chelsie C. Fitzwater Jan 2011

The Devil Was The First Scab : Working-Class Spirituality And Union Organization In Marion County, West Virginia 1918-1927, Chelsie C. Fitzwater

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A community-focused study of Marion County, West Virginia provides a unique opportunity to explore unionization efforts in central Appalachia. This thesis examines the interplay between working-class spirituality, unionism, and capitalism at the height of organized labor campaigns in the Fairmont Field between 1918 and 1927. The region reflects national and local trends in trade unionism as well as shifts in religious attitudes between conservative Fundamentalist evangelists and progressive Social Gospel ministers. Marion County differs from other Appalachian coalfields because local industrialists rather than absentee developers spearheaded the region’s economic development while labor leaders from outside of the state led unionization …

Narrativizing Success : Attitudes Toward African American Vernacular English In The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Diorio Jan 2011

Narrativizing Success : Attitudes Toward African American Vernacular English In The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Diorio

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

My thesis analyzes academia’s response to African American Vernacular English (AAVE) features in academic writing and how teachers’ responses to AAVE writing create socially constructed personas for students based on their vernacular dialect features. The results show spoken language strongly influences written language, although the range of dialect use varies from single feature usage to use of multiple features, and occurrences of use are highly localized. While instances of AAVE in academic writing are irregular, instructor response to features shows a pattern of strikethroughs and imperative statements used to correct language. As studies demonstrate such approaches to writing have negligible …

"Atlas Shrugged" And Third-Wave Feminism: An Unlikely Alliance, Paul Mcmahan Jan 2011

"Atlas Shrugged" And Third-Wave Feminism: An Unlikely Alliance, Paul Mcmahan

MA in English Theses

Ayn Rand and her work are often ignored by feminist critics because of Rand's personal life, her views on sex, and her vehement rejections of collectivism. Feminism has moved through overlapping waves known as first, second, and third-wave feminism. Throughout its life feminism has been marked by two strands: relational and individual. The strand of individual feminism has been more prevalent in Anglo-American feminism while relational feminism has been more predominant in European feminism. Atlas Shrugged was published six years prior to Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique , a text generally agreed upon as the starting point for second-wave feminism. …

Victory's Foundation: Us Logistical Support Of The Allied Mediterranean Campaign, 1942-1945, David D. Dworak Jan 2011

Victory's Foundation: Us Logistical Support Of The Allied Mediterranean Campaign, 1942-1945, David D. Dworak

History - Dissertations

From November 1942 until May 1945, the Allied nations fought a series of campaigns across the Mediterranean. Ever since, historians have debated the role and impact of the Mediterranean theater upon the greater war in Europe. Through analysis of official archival documents, unit histories from the period, and personal memoirs, this dissertation investigates the impact of US Army service forces on each of the campaigns and operations conducted across the Mediterranean theater. Additionally, this study examines how the campaigns of the Mediterranean shaped and informed the 1944 landings in France and the subsequent drive into Germany. This dissertation argues that …

The Flower Of Human Perfection: Moses Mendelssohn's Defense Of Rationalist Aesthetics, Aaron M. Koller Jan 2011

The Flower Of Human Perfection: Moses Mendelssohn's Defense Of Rationalist Aesthetics, Aaron M. Koller

Philosophy - Dissertations

This work is an analysis of Moses Mendelssohn's contributions to aesthetic rationalism, a tradition that arose in 18-century Germany. Rationalists held that aesthetic experience is primarily explained by the perfection of the object being considered, where perfection is a fundamental, rational (law-governed) property. As this work shows, Mendelssohn was among the first to acknowledge and effectively address several significant objections to the rationalist theory: its seeming inability to account for pleasure generally, tragedy and tragic pleasure more specifically, and the sublime; and its apparent blindness to the claims of genius and Rousseau's ethical critique of the arts. Many commentators have …

Culture, Dissent, And The State: The Example Of Commonwealth African Marriage Law, Johanna E. Bond Jan 2011

Culture, Dissent, And The State: The Example Of Commonwealth African Marriage Law, Johanna E. Bond

Scholarly Articles

This is an explosive time for those seeking to define the meaning and parameters of marriage. The subject has generated heated debate worldwide. In June 2010, the European Court of Human Rights declined to extend marriage rights to a gay Austrian couple, but the Court carefully laid the foundation for the recognition of such rights when a European consensus on the issue emerges. In July 2010, Argentina extended to same-sex couples the right to marry, joining nine other countries that legally recognize same-sex couples' right to marry. In August 2010, a United States district judge struck down a California ban …

The Art Of Memory: The Murals Of Northern Ireland And The Management Of History, Tony Crowley Jan 2011

The Art Of Memory: The Murals Of Northern Ireland And The Management Of History, Tony Crowley

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

The online archive Murals of Northern Ireland, held in Claremont Colleges Digital Library and covering the period from the late 1970s to the recent past, shows how the nature and function of murals in Northern Ireland have changed. In Derry and Belfast, they are the focal point of a tourist trail that has been established in the decade or so since the official end of the conflict following the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Now figured as 'heritage' and commodified in various forms -- postcards, posters, books and guided taxi tours (Fig. 1) -- the murals have become a source …

Distance, Jonathan Evans Kosik Jan 2011

Distance, Jonathan Evans Kosik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distance is a collection of short fiction that explores the spaces between us. Sometimes it‟s emotional, sometimes it‟s physical; it lies before us like a cross-country journey, dragging us through emotional terrain fraught with countless dangers and rare rewards. A convict returns to his childhood home. A lonely man documents the unexpected damage of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A teenager learns that some boots are not made for walking. These stories are the long and short of it. They examine the way we struggle to understand love, lust, disappointment and the kind of detachment that can …

The Myth Of Choice: The Cultural Shift In Cosmetic Surgery, Kelly Neyer Jan 2011

The Myth Of Choice: The Cultural Shift In Cosmetic Surgery, Kelly Neyer

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

What comes to mind when you hear the words cosmetic surgery? The majority of the population would think of breast augmentations, liposuction, or rhinoplasties; but what about vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasties, or pubic liposuction? In the United States, cosmetic surgery is undergoing a major cultural shift concerning the types of procedures done on women. Moving away from the outer, visible parts of a female body, cosmetic surgery is advancing to the inner and more private domains of a female body. Known as female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS), these procedures are part of the larger cultural shift in the trends and practices …

Human Dependency As Luck: Some Insights On Human Relationships, Matthew Beard Jan 2011

Human Dependency As Luck: Some Insights On Human Relationships, Matthew Beard

Philosophy Conference Papers

Human relationships have always held a unique position in moral philosophy, particularly in eudaemonist ethics, where they are considered by most to be essential to “the good life”. However, this fact has made conceptualising the good life in purely individualistic terms difficult, due to the important role that the ‘other’ plays in any kind of relationship. In this paper I argue that the fragile relationship between self and other that exists in all human relationships – but especially in more meaningful ones – can be best understood by considering it to be a kind of luck.

In developing this account …

The Lamb Of God And The Forgiveness Of Sin(S) In The Fourth Gospel, Sandra Marie Schneiders

The article presents a speech by Sandra M. Schneiders of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, delivered at the 73rd International Meeting of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, which was held at the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, July 31-August 3, 2010, in which she discussed the violence issue and the role of Christian Scripture in alleviating such dilemma, the Messiahship of Jesus Christ, and God's salvific plan to mankind.
