Beyond The Battlefield, Gary A. Seymour Jan 2011

Beyond The Battlefield, Gary A. Seymour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I am exhibiting several drawings, paintings, and sculptures representing a visual record of my creative research into, and my handling of, snails. Although I depict snails and their environment in a loose representational style, I have begun to incorporate digital drawing to enhance my art in a mixed media approach. I have created illustrative images of a forest floor as I imagine it would look to a snail in a giant, menacing world. Close-up images of grass become unusual jungle scenes, and my once tiny snails achieve a measure of control in this fanciful world. The inspiration for my art …

Naked Women The Unity In Dialectic Forces, Nargges S. Albekord Jan 2011

Naked Women The Unity In Dialectic Forces, Nargges S. Albekord

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates my art works, their context, content, and the process by which they were produced. The first part of the study addresses my background ideas and philosophies, their impact on my works, and the environmental and psychological context which made those ideas relevant to my paintings. I am not concerned with answering the usual questions, What is art? and Who is an artist? My intention is to find out who I choose to be and what I choose to do. The second part investigates the form and design of the art works– from the materials used to make …

Transfer Within Fyc Tracing The Operalization Of Writing-Related Knowledge And Concepts In Composition, Laura Martinez Jan 2011

Transfer Within Fyc Tracing The Operalization Of Writing-Related Knowledge And Concepts In Composition, Laura Martinez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study traces the transfer of writing-related knowledge and concepts from the composition classroom into the writing assignments composed by students within the same course. Working in a first-year-composition classroom taught through a writing-about-writing curriculum, the researcher observed students as they navigated from the initial learning of concepts such as rhetorical situations, writing processes, and discourse communities, into an application of these concepts in various writing assignments, including rhetorical analyses and discourse community profiles. By analyzing a composition instructor's objectives for her assignments and observing the interaction between students and their instructor in a single composition course for the duration …

Connecting Visual Design And Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions The United States, Latin America And Spain, Suzanne Mcdonough Jan 2011

Connecting Visual Design And Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions The United States, Latin America And Spain, Suzanne Mcdonough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis discusses whether culture can be used to predict visual design preferences in documentation and whether cultures with similar attributes demonstrate similar visual design preferences. The visual design of a document is an important element in effective communication to an audience. If the audience is outside the United States, it is important to understand the attributes of that culture to create documents that are most effective for the audience. Cultural theorist Geert Hofstede describes cultural attributes in terms of six cultural dimensions: individualism versus collectivism, high versus low power distance, high versus low uncertainty avoidance, masculinity versus femininity, long-term …

Juan Antonio Monroy: An Autobiography, Juan Antonio Monroy, Carolina Tolosa Archer Jan 2011

Juan Antonio Monroy: An Autobiography, Juan Antonio Monroy, Carolina Tolosa Archer

ACU Brown Library Monograph Series

Juan Antonio Monroy was a Marxist atheist as a young man, but since his conversion his passion has been to tell everyone he meets about Jesus. He has traveled to all of earth's continents except Antarctica and to many of the countries of those continents. He has experienced religious and political persecution and, as a result, helped found what became known as Amnesty International. Juan Antonio Monroy's footprints are seen around the world. His books, pamphlets, and articles are read in English and Spanish, and his radio programs are heard across Europe, the Caribbean, and much of Central and South …

Dorotea’S Displacement: Performing The Possible In Early Modern Spain, Christine Garst-Santos Jan 2011

Dorotea’S Displacement: Performing The Possible In Early Modern Spain, Christine Garst-Santos

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

The Angel And The Imp: The Duncan Sisters’ Performances Of Race And Gender, Jocelyn Buckner Jan 2011

The Angel And The Imp: The Duncan Sisters’ Performances Of Race And Gender, Jocelyn Buckner

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

From 1923 to 1959 Vivian and Rosetta Duncan performed the show Topsy and Eva in front of thousands of audiences in the United States and abroad. This essay examines how the Duncan Sisters’ appropriation of blackness through a yin and yang performance of black and white womanhood, their sexualized but ultimately infantilizing routine as young girls, and their take on anarchistic comedy resulted in a particular spin on age, gender, race, and sexuality that reinforced their privilege as white women even while it pushed the boundaries of acceptable femininity in the swiftly shifting American culture of the first half of …

An Exploration Of Self-Construction Through Buddhist Imagery In Maxine Hong Kingston's The Women Warrior, Rosann M. Bilek Gage Jan 2011

An Exploration Of Self-Construction Through Buddhist Imagery In Maxine Hong Kingston's The Women Warrior, Rosann M. Bilek Gage

ETD Archive

Buddhist imagery in The Woman Warrior can be interpreted as part of a Buddhist journey, a journey to observe and realize the nature of the self as mutable and indefinable this concept of self becomes transcendent through the novel to the reader by a participatory process which calls for insight beyond the illusion created by the narrative itself. Through an exploration of Buddhist inspired images - silence, seated mediation, the concept of the self as observer, koan, martial arts, the role of suffering and even aspects of transmigration and time - the struggle or journey to define a self transcends …

Charles Chesnutt Racial Relation Progression Throughout Career, Lindy R. Birney Jan 2011

Charles Chesnutt Racial Relation Progression Throughout Career, Lindy R. Birney

ETD Archive

Charles Chesnutt began his career with an ideology that race should not be a category in which to judge others. He felt that through literature he could help influence society and help create a less racial centric civilization. His career began with positive reviews from short story publications in multiple magazines. However, most critics and readers at the time did not know of Chesnutt's racial background. It was not until his second collection of short stories that Chesnutt revealed the truth about his heritage. After his success with The Conjure Woman and The Wife of His Youth (both published in …

Pigeonholing Without Hybridizing: The False Reduction Of Toni Morrison's Beloved, Lauren B. Molnar Jan 2011

Pigeonholing Without Hybridizing: The False Reduction Of Toni Morrison's Beloved, Lauren B. Molnar

ETD Archive

While Morrison's Beloved uses apparitions as symbolic association for slavery, the totality of what the incarnation of Beloved represents has been minimized by critics. Various genres are circulating in Beloved: magical realism, the historical novel, the gothic novel, and the ghost story. However, potential problems arise when attempting to pigeonhole the novel into simply one genre this is too limiting and nullifies a critic's insight by disregarding other possible dimensions within the text. Beloved moves through genres as it progresses and more attention needs to be paid to this shift. The narrative begins as a ghost story, but switches genres …

Variationist Approaches: External Factors Conditioning Variation In Spanish Phonology, Antonio Medina-Rivera Jan 2011

Variationist Approaches: External Factors Conditioning Variation In Spanish Phonology, Antonio Medina-Rivera

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

This chapter will focus on the external factors conditioning phonological variation. I will introduce the traditional factors to analyze social variation (e.g. sex, age, social class) and stylistic variation (careful vs. casual speech), as well as other possible factors not fully explored in Spanish. These other factors are mostly inspired by Allan Bell's model of language style as audience design (1984), and Rickford and McNair-Knox's incorporation of addressee and topic of conversation as two important factors to analyze variation (1994).

The Management And Creation Of Knowledge: Do Wikis Help?, Catherine Bruen, Noel Fitzpatrick, Paul Gormley, Jen Harvey, Claire Macavinney

Other resources

Wikis are frequently cited in Higher Education research as appropriate and powerful web spaces which provide opportunities to capture, discuss, and review individual, group, project or organisational activities. These activities, in turn, offer possibilities for knowledge development by utilising wiki collaborative active spaces. The chapter uses selected case studies examples to illustrate the use of wikis to support online community based tasks, project development/process, collaborative materials development and various student and peer supported activities. A key focus of the chapter centres on evaluating the effectiveness (or otherwise) of wikis to create online communities to support knowledge management (development, retention and …

Cross-National Comparative Analysis Of Community Radio Funding Schemes, Kenneth W. Murphy Jan 2011

Cross-National Comparative Analysis Of Community Radio Funding Schemes, Kenneth W. Murphy

Other resources

Community radio programming is distinguished by its production, its content and its purposes. It is made by the community, for the community and is primarily about the community. This report is a comparative assessment of the programme production support scheme available to the community radio sector in Ireland and those deployed in a number of comparative national settings. The research project provides a description of Irish and International (Austria, Canada, Denmark, France and New Zealand) models for supporting programme production by community radio broadcasters. It also evaluates how different aspects of the various models contribute to the capacities and sustainability …

Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan Jan 2011

Not Seeing The Joke: The Overlooked Role Of Humour In Researching Television Production, Edward Brennan

Articles

This article argues that humour can provide researchers with a unique access point into the professional cultures of media producers. By reconsidering an earlier case study, and reviewing relevant literature, it illustrates how humour can fulfil several functions in media production. Importantly, humour is a central means of performing the ‘emotional labour’ that increasingly precarious media work demands. For production research, the everyday joking and banter of media workers can provide an important and, heretofore, overlooked means of accessing culture, meaning, consensus and conflict in media organizations. The article argues that humour’s organizational role should be considered as a sensitizing …

Did America Have A Christian Founding?, Mark David Hall Jan 2011

Did America Have A Christian Founding?, Mark David Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

"Did America have a Christian Founding? This disputed question, far from being only of historical interest, has important implications for how we conceive of the role of religion in the American republic. Mark David Hall begins by considering two popular answers to the query— “Of course not!” and “Absolutely!”—both of which distort the Founders’ views. After showing that Christian ideas were one of the important intellectual influences on the Founders, he discusses three major areas of agreement with respect to religious liberty and church–state relations at the time of the Founding: Religious liberty is a right and must be protected; …
