Book Review: Our White Boy, Scott D. Peterson Jan 2011

Book Review: Our White Boy, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

Equal parts history and memoir, Our White Boy works on a number of levels while developing a wide range of themes. Operating as baseball history, the book chronicles two seasons of the Wichita Falls/Graham Stars, a black semi-pro baseball team. As a memoir, Jerry Craft tells his unique story as the only white man to play in the West Texas Colored League. On still another level, Craft and Sullivan follow the time-honored narrative strategy of illustrating how baseball can aid in the development and maturity process of a young man.

The Worship Architect, Constance Cherry Jan 2011

The Worship Architect, Constance Cherry

Symposium on Worship Archive

Comparing the work of a worship leader to that of an architect, this session offers a blueprint for designing worship services through various phases: laying the foundations, building the large frame for encountering God, creating doors and windows for dialogue with God, adding style to the worship event, and more.

Crafting A Hymn Tune: "Tricks Of The Trade", Alfred Fedak Jan 2011

Crafting A Hymn Tune: "Tricks Of The Trade", Alfred Fedak

Symposium on Worship Archive

A good congregational hymn tune is simple enough for untrained singers to learn quickly and sing well. It should also be fresh, memorable, and sturdy enough to withstand repetition. Finally, it must fit its text like a glove. How does one write such a tune? Come hear this widely-published composer describe his own process and offer advice on how to write your own good tunes. You are also invited to bring along a dozen copies of a tune or two you have composed, to share and to have the opportunity for an encouraging critique.

"Alleluias" Concentrated: Enabling Expansive Worship In Small Membership Congregations, Paul Detterman Jan 2011

"Alleluias" Concentrated: Enabling Expansive Worship In Small Membership Congregations, Paul Detterman

Symposium on Worship Archive

“If we only had / could…” can become too common a phrase in smaller congregations. God invites us to worship as we can, not as we can’t. Paul Detterman spends the vast majority of his time working with “wee kirks” (under 70 in worship). This session will equip and encourage even the smallest congregation (or small group within a larger community) to design and experience deep, joy-filled worship using everything God has given them and requiring nothing more.

Worship And Human Emotion, Syd Hielema Jan 2011

Worship And Human Emotion, Syd Hielema

Symposium on Worship Archive

Human emotion plays a profound role in Christian worship, but this role is very complex and easily misunderstood. What is the role of human emotion in our walk with God, and how do we as worship leaders obediently honour that role? What temptations to abuse emotion do we experience? How might we guide congregations to both emotional freedom and emotional maturity?

Glocal Worship! Finding The Local Congregation's Global Voice, Michael Hawn Jan 2011

Glocal Worship! Finding The Local Congregation's Global Voice, Michael Hawn

Symposium on Worship Archive

Glocal (no, this is not misspelled!) worship assumes that the Holy Spirit empowers local congregations as part of the body of Christ to connect with, pray for, and learn from the global church. This session will explore strategies for encouraging Glocal worship wherever you are.
