Acropolis Of The Middle-West: Decay, Renewal, And Boosterism In Cleveland’S University Circle, J. Mark Souther Feb 2011

Acropolis Of The Middle-West: Decay, Renewal, And Boosterism In Cleveland’S University Circle, J. Mark Souther

History Faculty Publications

In the mid-twentieth century, Cleveland, Ohio’s University Circle exemplified an emerging trend in which urban universities and other private institutions engaged in urban renewal. Situating the story of University Circle within the context of contemporary concerns about urban decay, deindustrialization, and suburbanization, the author argues that University Circle institutions were not simply trying to facilitate their own expansion. Rather, they were equally determined to create a setting appropriate to their regional, national, and even international reputations, as well as to advance the idea that an educational, medical, and cultural district could help reposition and rebrand a …

Wikichurch: Exploring A 21st Century Incarnation Ethic For The Body Of Christ, Nathan Swenson-Reinhold

Doctor of Ministry

Exploring a 21st Century Incamational Ethic for the Body of Christ The wikiChurch is Christ's church as it practices collaborative processes in its life, organization, and mission. More and more literature is being written about the flat nature of our world, its shrinking horizons, the free flow of information, the porous nature of national borders, and shifting generational norms. Children are growing up in a world where they will not only be well educated, but also will exercise creativity in the world's cultural formation. Our world is increasingly open sourced. In it's beginning, open source was a term used by …

History Faculty Publications

From 2002 to 2004, the children’s animated series Liberty’s Kids aired on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the United States’ public television network. Second, transformational leadership proves to be the most anticipated leadership style among Rotary Club members in both cultures. …

The Pragmatic Picturesque: The Philosophy Of Central Park, Gary Shapiro Feb 2011

The Pragmatic Picturesque: The Philosophy Of Central Park, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

New York's Central Park is one of the world's iconic works of landscape architecture. The park has achieved global recognition through its representations in film and photography, it is visited by millions every year and every sunny day sees a procession of engaged or newly married couples having their official photographs taken against the background of its picturesque scenery and monumental structures.

In the twenty-first century it may sound slightly odd to consider Central Park as a form of gardening, but the eighteenth-century founders of modern aesthetics and the philosophy of art would have called it a garden or park. …

Queen Of The Platform: Inventions On The Life Of Matilda Fletcher, Laura Madeline Wiseman Feb 2011

Queen Of The Platform: Inventions On The Life Of Matilda Fletcher, Laura Madeline Wiseman

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation explores the 19th century lecturer, poet, and suffragist, Matilda Fletcher (1842-1909). The fifth of fourteen children from abolitionist parents, Matilda was born in Illinois. Like her brother, who served in the Civil War, Matilda imagined herself in the public sphere. After the death of her one and only child, Matilda joined the lecture circuit. She spoke to support herself and her first husband, until his death. He died of tuberculosis, a disease he contracted during his service to the Union. Her lectures were a series of talks so powerful a man named a silver mine after her. Another …

The Swiss At The Battle Of The Little Bighorn, 1876, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

Twelve men born in Switzerland are known to have been in the Seventh Cavalry in June of 1876, at the time of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and seven of them participated in the battle. Five of these men were killed in the engagement. Much is known about the activities of some of these men, and John Lattman from Zurich left a good account of his experiences. The Swiss were slightly older than most of the men in the Seventh Cavalry, and they were about average in height as the other troopers. These Swiss showed much dedication to their …

Aesthetic Considerations In Mathematics, Nathalie Sinclair Jan 2011

Aesthetic Considerations In Mathematics, Nathalie Sinclair

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Drawing on some of the principles of humanistic mathematics first outlined by Alvin White, this paper seeks to examine the way in which value judgments are implicated in the growth of the mathematics discipline. After a short overview of some of the roles ascribed to the mathematical aesthetic historically, I turn to more contemporary positioning of the aesthetic in order to develop a framework that offers insight into the particular values, assumptions and desires that constrain what is done in mathematics, how it is done and why. My goal, at least in part, is to bring together under one umbrella …
