A Museum In A Book: Analyzing Culture Through Decolonizing Arts-Based Methodologies, Sharon Verner Chappell, Drew Chappell Feb 2011

A Museum In A Book: Analyzing Culture Through Decolonizing Arts-Based Methodologies, Sharon Verner Chappell, Drew Chappell

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

This paper explores the positivist, museum-based, and touristic constructions of indigenous cultures in the Americas, as represented in the DK Eyewitness series, and then overturns these constructions using an artist book created by the authors. In our analysis of the nonfiction series, we identified three trajectories: cataloguing, consignment to the past, and pleasurable display. Using techniques borrowed from "new historiography" and the decolonizing methodologies of Linda Tuhiwai Smith (1999), we suggest ways in which adults and young people might "speak back" to these positivist paradigms.

Performing Violence In Rotrou’S Theater, Nina Ekstein Feb 2011

Performing Violence In Rotrou’S Theater, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Violence has a significant and varied role in the theater of Jean Rotrou. Discord and strife are natural to the stage and violence is one of the ways such conflict may be expressed. The inherently spectacular nature of violence makes it particularly theatrical. At the same time, violence pleasingly tantalizes audiences. In this examination of Rotrou’s entire theatrical corpus, I first consider the use of “real” violence, both on stage and off. More interesting and even more common is potential violence, which includes threats of all sorts, as well as fortuitous interruptions. Potential violence avoids the serious difficulties that staging …

Walking Next To Our Shoes…, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology

Does Ladysmith Black Mambazo send chills up your spine? Paul Simon’s album Graceland brought South Africa’s musical roots to Western pop culture. And it was Athol Fugard who exposed its dramatic wisdom. Now comes another South African auteur taking the pulse of her country’s complex social reality. Robyn Orlin is known for work that can be subversive, outrageous, provocatively humorous, and visually arresting. From her early days as a choreographer during the Apartheid era, Orlin has made a career of confronting taboo subjects with a heightened, vaudevillian theatricality that aims to test and redefine ideas about South African performance.

Ghostly I(S)/Eyes: The Formation Of Subjectivity In Mexican American Life Narratives, Patricia Marie Perea Feb 2011

Ghostly I(S)/Eyes: The Formation Of Subjectivity In Mexican American Life Narratives, Patricia Marie Perea

American Studies ETDs

Autoethnography is the genre through which many marginalized groups write back to hegemony (Pratt 1992, 7). It is no wonder then that one of the modes in which Mexican Americans choose to express themselves and represent their communities is autoethnography. However, the study of Mexican American autoethnography reveals a more complicated dynamic occurring in its formation. This dynamic goes beyond binary constructions such as periphery (Mexican Americans) versus center (Euroamerican) to illuminate the shifting structure of Mexican American history as well as the shifting structure of Mexican American subjectivity. I argue Mexican American life narratives use autoethnographic methods to inform …
