Dialogic War: From The Battle Of Maldon To The War Of The Ring, Peter Grybauskas

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Examines Tolkien’s ability to hold two conflicting ways of thinking in creative tension, representing them through equally sympathetic characters each fairly having their own say, as he does in “The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son.” Grybauskas finds a parallel to this in the way Battle of Maldon balances its praise of Northern courage with its censure of the Earl of Maldon’s Ofermod.

Art According To Romantic Theology: Charles Williams's Analysis Of Dante Reapplied To J.R.R. Tolkien's "Leaf By Niggle", Michael Milburn

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Provides a grounding in Charles Williams’s “romantic theology,” which was heavily indebted to his reading of Dante, and the application of romantic theology to art, which Milburn demonstrates by examining Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle” through this lens. Winner of the Alexei Kondratiev Award at Mythcon 41.

Two Rings To Rule Them All: A Comparative Study Of Tolkien And Wagner, Jamie Mcgregor Apr 2011

Two Rings To Rule Them All: A Comparative Study Of Tolkien And Wagner, Jamie Mcgregor

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

A close comparison of Wagner’s Ring Cycle and the history of the One Ring in Tolkien’s legendarium which goes far beyond the usual shallow or dismissive comparison between the two. Here we see Tolkien, as he frequently did, absorbing the influence of an earlier author and responding in the form of a correction based on his sense that Wagner had, as Shippey put it, “got something very important not quite right” (Road 344).

Considers the characters of Aragorn and Túrin and how, at the level of motif, their name changes throughout the legendarium reflect their own very different relationships with their wyrd and the fate of the universe.

Implementing Variations 6.0 Pilot, Uconn 2010-2011, Anna E. Kijas

UConn Library Presentations

This presentation examined implementation of Variations 6.0 (open-source system) at UConn from the perspective of a music librarian. Focus is placed on the importance of collaboration between University Library ITS and the M&DA Library, as well as the creation of a realistic workflow model, pilot timeline, and any challenges that were met along the way. Additionally, the decision behind choosing Variations 6.0 as a possible replacement for the current digital audio reserve system (at UConn) is discussed and the implications associated with providing streaming access to albums rather than single-tracks. This presentation was presented at the Northeast Regional Computing Program …

Comparing Deaf Native Signers And Deaf Early Signers With Respect To Phonological Perception, Ian Deandrea-Lazarus Apr 2011

Comparing Deaf Native Signers And Deaf Early Signers With Respect To Phonological Perception, Ian Deandrea-Lazarus

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Common criteria for a native ASL signer include exposure to ASL from birth and having Deaf parents. This study questions the necessity of the second criterion by comparing two groups: 16 Deaf adults with Deaf parents and exposed to ASL from birth, and 16 Deaf adults with hearing parents and exposed to ASL before age two. All determined whether pairs of pseudosigns, sometimes differing in phonological details, matched. The two groups did not differ significantly on accuracy, but the first group responded faster than the second group on average. These findings suggest processing differences between the two groups, but otherwise …

The California Art Quilt Revolution, Nancy C. Bavor Apr 2011

The California Art Quilt Revolution, Nancy C. Bavor

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The American studio art quilt movement that emerged in the last decades of the twentieth century had its primary origins in Ohio and California, and to a lesser degree, Massachusetts. There is no study that considers the early quilt artists in California as a group nor are there studies that consider their work from an art historical viewpoint. Many of the artists who began making quilts in the 1960s and 1970s are now in their seventies and eighties and there is some urgency to capturing their oral histories and documenting their work.  This paper examines the lives of nine female …

Rhetoric, Christmas Cards, And Infertility: A Season Of Silence, Kristin L. Arola Apr 2011

Rhetoric, Christmas Cards, And Infertility: A Season Of Silence, Kristin L. Arola

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

Revising notions of family. One card at a time.

When I first saw the call for the special issue on family rhetoric, I found myself feeling left out. While I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a cousin, and a wife, in spite of many years and dollars spent trying to be a mother, I am unable to do so. I do not have my own family. As I contemplated my own rhetoric of “the family,” holiday cards began to pile up. Card after card, letter after letter, all about kids—kids I do not have. …

Harlot Runs In The Family, Paul Muhlhauser, Kelly Bradbury

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

Much to our delight, our call for this special issue on family rhetoric attracted a record number of submissions. For some, the connection was deeply personal; for others, cultural representations of family and/or the role of various communities on family drew shrewd attention. Ultimately, the pieces in this issue were selected not only for their brilliant and creative insights about family rhetoric (how family members communicate with each other) and the rhetoric of family (how culture and society inform us about the meaning of family), but also because they represent an array of perspectives, experiences, and forms of expressing our …
