Book Review: Walking Gently On The Earth, Melanie Springer Mock Apr 2011

Book Review: Walking Gently On The Earth, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "For that reason, I approached Walking Gently on the Earth with a healthy sense of skepticism, ready to be preached at again regarding the choices I’ve made about my family and lifestyle. Yet a few pages into Lisa Graham McMinn’s new book, I knew this exploration of sustainability would be different: more gentle, as the title itself suggests. McMinn, along with her daughter and co-writer Megan Anna Neff, examines the ways we can more readily nurture “God’s good gift”—that is, the earth and everything in it— through what McMinn calls “an ethic of care.” Although McMinn and Neff challenge …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-04-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The Virtue Of Profit (Boston), C. William Pollard

Business As A Calling Of God (Boston), C. William Pollard Apr 2011

Business As A Calling Of God (Boston), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Pollard addressed the 2011 Boston Business Breakfast alongside Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's David Gill. In his address, he spoke of how the 2008-2009 financial collapse had caused many to ask whether businesses could make money while also being moral communities. For Pollard, this is possible only if leaders focus first on people rather than profit, a reorientation of priority which will require a transformation in how businesses are run and how future corporate managers are educated.

A Community Giving A Helping Hand: Tri-State District Tornado, Andrew Prater Apr 2011

A Community Giving A Helping Hand: Tri-State District Tornado, Andrew Prater

Theory and Practice: HIST430

On the evening of February 24, 1935, a deadly tornado ravaged through the Tri-State District towns of Commerce, Douthat, Picher, Hockerville, Ok, Shoal Creek, Stapleton, MO, and Baxter Springs, KS. The total number of people impacted from the rare February tornado totaled 286. This disaster did not happen at an ordinary time in history, it happened at a time when many families were struggling to feed and cloth their families and at a time when the national unemployment rate exceeded twenty-five percent during the "Great Depression." During this time of great distress and unemployment, a community that was centered around …

The Aspiration Of The Spanish Grapheme ‘H’, Carolina Gonzalo-Llera Apr 2011

The Aspiration Of The Spanish Grapheme ‘H’, Carolina Gonzalo-Llera

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

One aspect of Spanish pronunciation that differs from English pronunciation is the phonetic treatment of the letter ‘h’. While this grapheme corresponds to a voiceless glottal fricative [h] in English (also known as “aspirated [h]”), it has no phonetic realization in Spanish. In other words, the letter ‘h’ in Spanish is not pronounced at all or is “silent”. This difference often results in Spanish pronunciation errors by L2 learners of the language. The present study aims to deepen our understanding of the erroneous pronunciation of ‘h’ by exploring how prevalent the error really is in the speech of beginning and …

Gallaudet At 150: Chapter One, Meredith M. Peruzzi Apr 2011

Gallaudet At 150: Chapter One, Meredith M. Peruzzi

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

No comprehensive history of Gallaudet University has been published since 1985. Although more recent works have focused on specific events since that time, it has been nearly 30 years since Gallaudet’s history has been examined as a whole. No book about Gallaudet’s history has ever been created for a general, non-academic audience, in an accessible, “coffee table” style. This book uses that format to present the first 16 years of the college’s existence with sections on Architecture, Academics, Student Life, and Notable People. It is the first chapter of a future publication that will honor the institution’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

Electrowetting Induced Cassie-Wenzel Transition On Textured Surfaces, Kenza Mouttaki Apr 2011

Electrowetting Induced Cassie-Wenzel Transition On Textured Surfaces, Kenza Mouttaki

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

The electrowetting field expanded drastically during the last decade. It combines several laws and theories out of which Young's equation, Cassie law and Wenzel law. The main focus of electrowetting is the transition between a superhydrophobic state -Cassie- and a hydrophilic state -Wenzel-. This transition allows a wide range of applications such as microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip devices, chemical microreactors and management of microelectronics.

The purpose of this research is to provide a standard operational procedure for the fabrication of substrates that allow the Cassie to Wenzel transition. Theoretical equations are compared to experimental results. These substrates will be implemented in future …
