Fixing Belief: Artificial Preservatives, James Walker Tufts Iv May 2011

Fixing Belief: Artificial Preservatives, James Walker Tufts Iv

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Research opened with inquiries into the state space of the self and various modalities of the construction of the self. Flawed research design led towards a loss of original focus, spaces opened accordingly. Early sculptural work looked towards a semantic flattening through flushing out and digitally manipulated photographic and video work investigated avenues of ocular-centric landscape construction. Photoshop CS5 and its Content Aware Fill tool were engaged as collaborator and animations ensued. Hesitant time-based sketches were developed to suggest work incomplete and instead took their place. Space-based sketches followed, using the multiple to thwart focus on parts and draw it …

The Evolution Of Style In The Neoclassical Works Of Stravinsky, Kyle Szabo May 2011

The Evolution Of Style In The Neoclassical Works Of Stravinsky, Kyle Szabo

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The compositional output of Igor Stravinsky is roughly divided into three periods: Russian, Neoclassical, and Serial. In his neoclassical period of composition, Stravinsky developed highly refined methods of formal construction, harmonic management, and use of counterpoint. Careful analysis of several neoclassical and transitional works serves to demonstrate Stravinsky’s innovative methods of voice leading, economy of pitch class set material, and ingenuity in redefining Classical era forms. Stravinsky’s Russian ballets are stylistically focused on practical and stage-oriented formal structures, stratified counterpoint, and thematic content originating in folk materials. As he began writing more concert music, the extraction of these stylistic elements …

Town-Gown Relations At Providence College: Perspectives And Interactions Between Students And The Local Community, Joe Paola May 2011

Town-Gown Relations At Providence College: Perspectives And Interactions Between Students And The Local Community, Joe Paola

Global Studies Student Scholarship

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and comment on the relationships that exist between Providence College students and the local Smith Hill‐Elmhurst community. In conducting my research I concentrated mainly on the nuanced perceptions that the students and the local residents have of each other. My main interest was to see how the students defined themselves in relation to the outside community, and in discovering how much their relationship is based upon these perceptions. At the same time, I also aimed to find out what the locals’ opinions were on the place of the students; namely, if they …

All State Art Symposium 2011, Diana Gregory, Shane Mcdonald

Art and Design Creative Works

Now in its third year, the All-State Art Symposium (ASAS) experienced a tremendous surge in participation. The number of ASAS artworks submitted doubled in size this year. This year over 1,230 individual artworks were submitted for regional judging. From this group, 485 artworks were selected as regional winners by the regional coordinators for state judging (see page 42 for details.) Finally, the two state judges selected 146 artworks representing 49 art teachers from 36 high schools for the …

Supplemental Assignments To Increase The Retention Of Knowledge For Biology I And Ii Lecture, Krystyn Vitale

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Supplemental assignments for Biology I and II lectures were designed to increase the understanding of important biology concepts. Topics from each lecture, and frequently misunderstood details from that topic, were chosen as the concepts for each assignment. The questions posed allow students to process the information step-by-step and form a conclusion from their piece-wise work. This format allows students to foster their critical thinking skills and increase their retention of the knowledge learned through problem solving sessions.

Ewiges Deutschland As An Examination Of Popular Political Culture In National Socialist Germany 1939-1940, Howard Joseph Sherrick Jr. May 2011

Ewiges Deutschland As An Examination Of Popular Political Culture In National Socialist Germany 1939-1940, Howard Joseph Sherrick Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Under the Reich Ministry of Propaganda and Popular Enlightenment functioned the Winterhilfswerk des deutschen Volkes (the “WHW”), or Winter Assistance Program of the German people. Initially designated in 1933 to assist the unemployed, the WHW expanded its reach by disseminating propaganda in the form of an annual edition of the Ewiges Deutschland:Ein deutsches Hausbuch household book from 1939 through 1943, intended to entertain and politically educate German family members throughout the year. Decidedly more comprehensible than Mein Kampf, another widely popularly disseminated book in Nazi Germany for weddings, Ewiges Deutschland likely enjoyed a more satisfied audience of readers. A study …

The Supreme Brother-In-Law: Ramón Serrano Suñer And Spanish Fascism During The Franco Regime, Brian David Hill May 2011

The Supreme Brother-In-Law: Ramón Serrano Suñer And Spanish Fascism During The Franco Regime, Brian David Hill

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study focuses on the political career of Ramón Serrano Suñer, a Spanish politician whose career lasted from 1933 until 1942. Particularly, it addresses several pertinent questions about Serrano’s career and the larger Franco government, including the extent to which it was truly authoritarian and the real strength of authentic fascism in post-Civil War Spain. From 1937-1941, Serrano was the second only to his brother-in-law, the dictator Francisco Franco, in terms of political prominence. Serrano used his personal connections with Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the fascist Falange party, to vault himself from wartime refugee to …

Life In The Open Air: The Persistence Of Outdoor Air Treatment For Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients In America From The Industrial Revolution To The 1950s, Tara Darlene Mastrangelo May 2011

Life In The Open Air: The Persistence Of Outdoor Air Treatment For Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients In America From The Industrial Revolution To The 1950s, Tara Darlene Mastrangelo

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis explores the persistent use of outdoor air as a treatment for tuberculosis, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The focus of my paper differs from other scholarly works on tuberculosis in that it assumes the connections between climatology and the sanatoria/home cure movements are strong enough to warrant combining them under the term “outdoor air treatment,” rather than categorizing them as two distinct methods . Based on this premise, my paper explores the ways in which outdoor air treatment outlasted many of the changes to society which occurred during the late 19th and early 20th …

The Logic Of Aid: American Foreign Policy And Usaid In Rwanda, Ariel F. Hendrickson May 2011

The Logic Of Aid: American Foreign Policy And Usaid In Rwanda, Ariel F. Hendrickson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Since the end of World War II, development aid has become a permanent fixture of U.S. foreign policy. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been the primary organization for implementing the American government’s development policies. Because of this, USAID provides an excellent lens for viewing the historical trajectory of American development aid. USAID’s experience in Rwanda demonstrates the broad policy shifts that define this historical trajectory. During the 1960s, modernization theory directed development projects. In the 1970s this shifted to a needs-based mandate, and during the 1980s market liberalization programs defined USAID’s objectives. The rich relationship between …

Integrating Multimodal Composition Techniques In First-Year Writing Courses: Theory And Praxis, Bret Zawilski May 2011

Integrating Multimodal Composition Techniques In First-Year Writing Courses: Theory And Praxis, Bret Zawilski

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The body of this thesis seeks to explore the costs and benefits of instituting a multimodal composition pedagogy within first-year writing. Contested definitions of multimodality and multimedia provide a background for delving into the printed-word dominated discourse, where image, sound, and animation are all placed in a subordinate position relative to that of the written word. Within, many theories of multimodality and composition pedagogy are placed in contrast with one another in an attempt to discern connections in the body of already published theoretical material. The primary method of data collection for this document involved the investigation of secondary sources …

Rhetoric Of Plagiarism: Problems, Opportunities, And Interactions, Michael Patrick Morrison May 2011

Rhetoric Of Plagiarism: Problems, Opportunities, And Interactions, Michael Patrick Morrison

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis explores the question of how James Madison University (JMU) communicates information concerning plagiarism policy and values to students, especially first-year composition students. The research covers some history of plagiarism issues, questions of why plagiarism is so difficult for scholars to define, why students plagiarize, and how attitudes in academia are changing as definitions continue to evolve. Overall, JMU communicates plagiarism poorly to students in their early stages of integrating into life at JMU, though the university still takes pains to inform students of the consequences of plagiarism through first-year composition instructors. The implications of this writing are an …

"Sing The Dionysus": Euripides' Bacchae As Dramatic Hymn, Rebecca Anne Richards May 2011

"Sing The Dionysus": Euripides' Bacchae As Dramatic Hymn, Rebecca Anne Richards

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Of the extant classical and pre-classical hymns to Dionysus, both literary and cultic, none praises him as the god of drama nor explicitly connects him with theatre. This paper will argue that Euripides has modeled the dramatic action of The Bacchae on the conventional form of Greek hymns, creating a play that is a variegated quilt of songs, all designed in one way or another to extol Dionysus and the benefits he brings to humankind. Some of these have a conventional appearance; others are more imlOvative in content and form, in particular, what we call the "dran1atic hymn" which encompasses …

Unfamiliar Streets: The Chattanooga Sit-Ins, The Local Press, And The Concern For Civilities, Jessie Harris May 2011

Unfamiliar Streets: The Chattanooga Sit-Ins, The Local Press, And The Concern For Civilities, Jessie Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff in their breakthrough work, The Race Beat, contended that mainstream newspapers—white newspapers—largely ignored the black community until the 1950s and 1960s when editors gradually began opening their pages to reports of racial discrimination and the emerging protest against segregation. This coverage significantly shaped the civil rights movement, Roberts and Klibanoff argued. “Unfamiliar Streets” offers nuance to their narrative. Examining the local coverage of the 1960 Chattanooga sit-in movement as a case study, Jessie Harris contends that reporters and editors, although they should be credited for extensively covering the sit-ins, ultimately cared more for civilities than …

A New Paradigm: Brazilian Catholic Eco-Justice Activism In The Neoliberal Age, Lena R. Connor May 2011

A New Paradigm: Brazilian Catholic Eco-Justice Activism In The Neoliberal Age, Lena R. Connor

Environmental Analysis Program Mellon Student Summer Research Reports

This paper analyzes how traditional liberation theology in Brazil has been adapted in the neoliberal age to encompass ecological goals and rhetoric. In this research report, I first examine the work of prominent Brazilian ecotheologians, Ivone Gebara and Leonardo Boff. I then look into the applications of such ecological liberation theology in Catholic activism in Brazil, focusing on the role of religious advocacy in dam controversies, land reform, and mining.

Opposites Attract: The Fusion Of Confucianism And The Qin Dynasty’S Legalism In The People’S Republic Of China Today, Elyse Tompkins

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

The aim of this research is to examine the seemingly opposite Legalist outlook of the Qin dynasty against the philosophy of Confucianism, and determine the extent to which they have impacted the government and society of the People’s Republic of China today. It is common in Eastern cultures to blend two seemingly opposite ideas, which is partially how this mixture of Legalism and Confucianism works in the current government. The Qin dynasty employed the legalist governmental philosophy, which allowed one ruler to effectively control all of China. This set up the principle of a concentrated government over the vast Chinese …

Using The Web Wisely: Assisting The Nonprofit Sector With Internet Use, Lesley N. Greenwell May 2011

Using The Web Wisely: Assisting The Nonprofit Sector With Internet Use, Lesley N. Greenwell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study explores the unique difficulties nonprofit professionals may experience in creating and maintaining online presence. Both quantitative and qualitative methods in the form of an online survey and a focus group were used to gather data from nonprofit practitioners around Bowling Green, Kentucky. Findings revealed that nonprofits suffer from limited resources, like time, funding, personnel, and expertise, which impede their ability to take advantage of websites, social networking, and online grant research. In an attempt to address the needs identified by participants, research results were used to develop a series of training workshops facilitated by experienced professionals in the …
