The John H. Crawford Papers: Letters From The Civil War., Holly Young May 2011

The John H. Crawford Papers: Letters From The Civil War., Holly Young

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of my thesis research was to transcribe a collection of letters to John H. Crawford about the formation and actions of the Sixtieth Tennessee Infantry (Confederate) in Jonesboro during the Civil War, annotate them, and provide an introduction that details the events and people described in the letters. These letters are important because they describe first-hand the process of formation of this Confederate infantry unit in an area of East Tennessee that predominately supported the Union. The letters themselves can be found in the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University’s Charles C. Sherrod Library.

Down Elk: A Collection Of Poems., Catherine Pritchard Childress May 2011

Down Elk: A Collection Of Poems., Catherine Pritchard Childress

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This creative thesis is a collection of poems which represent a necessary journey to reconcile my relationship with the people, places, and values of Southern Appalachia, my home that is both stifling and liberating. Growing up in the Appalachian Mountains has influenced my character and my writing in ways that are far-reaching and constantly evolving. At different points in my life I have been equally enamored with the red dirt of my childhood and determined to dig my way out of its clutches. I have spread my wings in large cities and invariably found that I longed to get back …

Dispensing Wilderness., Evan Edward Townsend May 2011

Dispensing Wilderness., Evan Edward Townsend

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This honor’s thesis and my solo exhibition, borne from the love of wilderness, seek to connect with the reader/viewer personally as nature is connected with us. My art refers to the responsibility we all share for a connection to and stewardship of nature. Through my show and thesis and through the lens of art, I hope to inform and raise consciousness of our waning and coveted American wildernesses and natural wonders. Each piece in my show has a historical context that provides information about my thought process and my need to educate. With my research providing the backlighting, the paper …

Creating Gender In Disney/Pixar's Wall-E., Brittany Long May 2011

Creating Gender In Disney/Pixar's Wall-E., Brittany Long

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this thesis I will look at Disney/Pixar’s creation and portrayal of gender in the film WALL-E. In particular I will be looking at two areas of interest: (1) The ways in which Disney/ Pixar anthropomorphizes and creates gender for WALL-E and EVE, the two main robots featured in the movie, and (2) whether or not Disney/Pixar’s representations of masculinity and femininity follow the stereotypical representations of male dominance or if this representations challenge this stereotype. In this chapter, I will begin with a brief overview of previous studies in the areas of anthropomorphism, gender representation in children’s media, and …

Preservation Of The Old Dominion: The Role Of National Security Concerns In The Virginia Ratification Debates, Joseph Harrington May 2011

Preservation Of The Old Dominion: The Role Of National Security Concerns In The Virginia Ratification Debates, Joseph Harrington

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis will display the ways in which national security concerns played into the debate over whether Virginia should ratify the United States Constitution. The vast majority of primary sources used in this thesis come from speeches delivered by the representatives from throughout Virginia (which at this time included present-day West Virginia and Kentucky) in the Virginia Ratifying Convention. The three major areas which this thesis explores are the threat of war with other states, the threat of war with foreign nations, and the threat of slave insurrections. The chapter on threat of war with other states examines the possibility …

An Insult To Authority: The Jewish Means To A Nazi End, Samuel Joseph Preston Anno Di Stefano May 2011

An Insult To Authority: The Jewish Means To A Nazi End, Samuel Joseph Preston Anno Di Stefano

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The thesis attempts to place smuggling on the Warsaw Ghetto until the Great Deportation into the larger context of economic warfare as a Nazi policy. This largely overlooked aspect of Jewish response provides valuable insights to the larger debate because of the experimental nature of administration in the Government General and its potential impact on determining the course of the Final Solution. The paper alleges that Jewish smuggling was less a form of resistance than an aid in alleviating German responsibility for their captives’ welfare and an effective method of management. Research tools included an abundance of primary documents for …

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson May 2011

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

During the late nineteenth century, the penetration of industrial capitalism into southern Appalachia fundamentally altered the region’s economy. Historians have thoroughly studied this period’s coal and timber industries, but little scholarly attention has been paid to the iron industry. Iron production also made great strides in both output and scale as railroads and mining increased demand for iron products. The growth of Birmingham’s iron and steel industry has dominated the studies of iron that have been done, but between the 1880s and 1920s the iron industry of southwest Virginia and east Tennessee also were thoroughly modernized. The consolidation of the …

"For The Fracture Of Good Order," The Catonsville Nine Protest And Legacy, Timothy Joseph Stefonowich

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

1968 was a tumultuous year in American history. The United States government was in the middle of the Cold War and their involvement in Vietnam reached its highest level to date. Meanwhile, on the domestic front, the country was erupting in turmoil. Many American citizens engaged in protest against the government’s overseas efforts, and took to great lengths to resist the war effort. These protestors encompassed people from all walks life, students, clergy, professors, lawyers, and politicians. One of the strongest groups of this anti-war movement was religious. By May of 1968 one group of Catholics were so fed up …

The Necessary Blend Of Narrative And Technology In Composition: Identity Crisis Embraced, Jessica A. Lewis May 2011

The Necessary Blend Of Narrative And Technology In Composition: Identity Crisis Embraced, Jessica A. Lewis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Wendy Bishop’s work, “Suddenly Sexy: Creative Writing Rear-ends Composition,” is focused on the necessity of flexible relationships between first-year composition professors and creative nonfiction writers for the improvement of composition pedagogy. This emphasis on collaboration and merging is even more important now due to the personal relationships and self-awareness established in online writing environments. In addition to the exploration of confused definitions in expressivist theory and the negotiation that Bishop puts forth in her work, this thesis focuses on the new influences of online writing environments on writing culture. Through the process of research and narrative, Bishop’s ideals and goals …

The Casualty Of Home, Molly Koeneman May 2011

The Casualty Of Home, Molly Koeneman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Casualty of Home is a novel-in-stories focusing largely on the displacement felt due to situation or family. Often, members of a family have trouble making connections with each other, for each has its own thoughts, desires and expectations. Still, they have something rudimentary in common: blood. Because they are related, family members are inclined to care for individuals they might not even know, much less love. Spanning three generations, the characters in Casualty of Home deal with the constraints of family, the pressures of adolescence, and the limitations of the rural Southern culture in which they live. The characters face …

Out Of The Kitchen And Into Actuality: Postmodern Literary Women As Free Agents, Nicole Foti May 2011

Out Of The Kitchen And Into Actuality: Postmodern Literary Women As Free Agents, Nicole Foti

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

This paper will discuss the transition from Modernism to Postmodernism in 1960s literature. Specifically, the paper will discuss the deconstruction of the subject and the introduction of subsequent “pluralities.” Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, and Richard Yates’s Revolutionary Road are discussed as texts in unique areas of transition in which the female protagonists embody this sense of plurality and use it to become women freer from patriarchal constraints.

A Creative And Scholarly Exploration Of Edna Obrien’S Iphigenia, Danya Gee Martin May 2011

A Creative And Scholarly Exploration Of Edna Obrien’S Iphigenia, Danya Gee Martin

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

In this thesis, I will document the creative work I completed for my Senior Acting Project. I will also explore my Senior Acting Project from a more ‘conventional’ academic standpoint. I will explore various definitions of tragedy and argue my own definition; I will also investigate who Euripides was as a writer and human being. I will then apply my findings to three different versions of Euripides’ tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis: a classical translation, a more contemporary translation, and the adaptation I performed for my SAP. I will argue whether or not each meets my criteria for a tragedy, …

Teaching Music To Students With Multiple Disabilities: A Study Into Teachers' Perspectives And Practices For Self-Contained General Music Instruction, Angela D. Clemens May 2011

Teaching Music To Students With Multiple Disabilities: A Study Into Teachers' Perspectives And Practices For Self-Contained General Music Instruction, Angela D. Clemens

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study investigates the experience of elementary teachers providing music instruction to students with multiple disabilities in self-contained classrooms. With legislation mandating public education for students with special needs, music teachers increasingly encounter these students in their classrooms, which range from inclusion to self-contained environments. Research indicates that music is a valid and valuable tool for supporting extra-musical learning as well as fostering musical growth in students with special needs. Additionally, research provides insight into inclusion experiences for teachers and for students. However, research into self-contained instruction is minimal. This study addressed that gap through phenomenological exploration of teachers in …

Building The Foundation For Rhode Island Immigrant Assistance Database: A Brief Study Of The Communication And Collaboration Among Rhode Island Social Service Agencies, Matthew Friedman May 2011

Building The Foundation For Rhode Island Immigrant Assistance Database: A Brief Study Of The Communication And Collaboration Among Rhode Island Social Service Agencies, Matthew Friedman

Global Studies Student Scholarship

In the state of Rhode Island, numerous non-profit organizations, businesses and state government departments provide a variety of services to the immigrant population. Among these agencies, each has different levels of communication, collaboration and knowledge of the other organizations operating in Rhode Island. Collaborating with the International Institute of Rhode Island, a non-profit immigration agency located in Providence, my initial goal was the creation of the Rhode Island Immigrant Assistance Database (RIIAD), a simple and informative web page detailing the services, mission statement and address of the agencies that assist immigrants. Of the more than seventy organizations invited to the …

Building A Better Brit: Imperialism And Masculinity In The Lives And Works Of H. Rider Haggard And Rudyard Kipling, Zachary David Cady May 2011

Building A Better Brit: Imperialism And Masculinity In The Lives And Works Of H. Rider Haggard And Rudyard Kipling, Zachary David Cady

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This work began as an investigation of the role that literature played in conveying imperialistic values to children during the Victorian period. Over the course of my research into the fiction of H. Rider Haggard and Rudyard Kipling, I began to question the role of masculinity in the imperial project. This work has developed out of that line of thought. Maintaining and defending the British Empire was a man’s business, and as such the British required a generation of men that held the masculine ideals and values required to undertake such an endeavor. This need manifested itself in many ways, …

And The Showmen Cried, “Spirit!”: Harry Houdini And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’S Search For The Truth Behind Modern Spiritualism, Stefanie Marie Strosnider-Hollis May 2011

And The Showmen Cried, “Spirit!”: Harry Houdini And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’S Search For The Truth Behind Modern Spiritualism, Stefanie Marie Strosnider-Hollis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This Master’s thesis is constructed around the Spiritualist lecture tours of Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The famed British author was an ardent Spiritualist who believed it was his personal mission to spread the religion and practices of Spiritualism in Europe, Australia, and America. Houdini, on the other hand, strove to expose deceitful mediums as con artists and fakes. In the early 1920s, both men embarked on lecture tours throughout the United States, spreading their views and attempting to sway the minds of curious Americans. The lectures were well attended, often before full houses, and were well publicized. …
