Tchaikovsky And The Russian Five‘S Contemporary Relevance: How Selected Works Of 19th Century Russian Composers Have Influenced Popular Culture Of The West, Cameron Carr
Senior Theses
As a culture, we often use music to accent events that would otherwise not need them. Many of these events utilize what is considered ‘classical’ music, and within the Classical Music world a select few works get copious amounts of play time, and thus get heavily imprinted in our minds’ ear. Certain correlations between these situations and musical phrases have become so ingrained in our culture that it is almost alien to not have them be together.
Many of the works that are implanted in our culture come out of a specific location and time: the Romantic era in Russia. …
Videogames, Experiential Reality, Ethics, And Gamers, Sean Naubert
Videogames, Experiential Reality, Ethics, And Gamers, Sean Naubert
Senior Theses
“Videogames are a waste of time and rob people of a chance at a real life.” This has long been the status quo regarding videogames and gamers. Videogames, Experiential Reality, Ethics, and Gamers rallies against this by undermining the philosophical assumption that comes with the claims against gaming, namely that reality is solely and completely physically determined.
On this quest, “legends and philosophical clans” shall be called upon and united to besiege the conventional notion that there is a sole physical reality. This notion is cut down like so many orcs, leaving the Individual Champion as the lone warrior left …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Living inside of the world of the past is often the most difficult thing an interpreter can help her audience to do. But, in spite of its difficulty, it is the most necessary. The adage that before you insult a man, you must walk a mile in his shoes is correct. [excerpt]

Haiti's Troubles: Perspectives From The Theology Of Work And From Liberation Theology, Lys Stéphane Florival
Haiti's Troubles: Perspectives From The Theology Of Work And From Liberation Theology, Lys Stéphane Florival
Dissertations (2 year embargo)
This dissertation examines "signs of the times" in contemporary Haiti, concentrating on the harsh realities of work and workers in the context of entrenched poverty and ecological devastation. It seeks to formulate a Christian theological-ethical framework that will empower movements of both the Church and Haitian society to engage the problems of the degradation of work and exploitation of workers. This investigation adopts the critical method of correlation using insights from certain modern theologies of work (Chenu, John Paul II, and Miroslav Volf) and from liberation theology (Gutiérrez, Godefroy Midy, and J-B Aristide) to analyze key features of the realities …

Credit System In The First Abbasid Era, Zahraa Mohsen Hassan
Credit System In The First Abbasid Era, Zahraa Mohsen Hassan
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
It is well known that credit is an important system for trade. Since trade is of two types: distant and near (present), credit has the greatest importance, especially for distant trade, as it guarantees the return of funds with a profit for the owner of the money (the merchant). Hence, our study of the credit system and its connection, in particular, to distant trade. The historical roots of the credit system go back to the civilization of Mesopotamia, especially since there are two fundamental factors in the emergence of credit transactions: the emergence of money and the accompanying emergence of …

The Spanish Government's Position On The Rome-Berlin Axis During World War Ii, Furqan Faisal Jadaan Al-Ghanimi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
When German forces invaded and occupied Poland in September 1939, it was not expected that this operation would turn into a world war at a time when European countries were searching for peace. The crisis was initially a war between two countries to resolve outstanding issues between them after the failure of a diplomatic solution when German leader Adolf Hitler (1933-1945) decided to invade Poland and regain the German lands he was demanding, believing that it would end in a new concession similar to what happened in the occupation of Austria and the Sudetenland region, which was approved for annexation …
Critical Approaches Of Taha Hussein, Faiza Abdul Zahra Jamil
Critical Approaches Of Taha Hussein, Faiza Abdul Zahra Jamil
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Taha Hussein turned to the recipient, so he resorted to analysis and explanation to convince the recipient's mind; as he transferred the critical process from emotion to reason in all his critical approaches while following the method of explanation, historical, impressionistic, psychological, or philosophical approaches, or during his comparisons between writers. We can say - with impartiality - that Taha Hussein's criticisms constituted a revolution that overturned critical concepts among Arabs at the beginning of the twentieth century. The proverb says: People do not differ on anything except that it is great, and the difference of people from specialists and …

Social And Historical Glimpses Of Ali Shariati's Thought, Ghanem Naguib Abbas, Wael Jabbar Jwda
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Ali Shariati is considered one of the Iranian intellectual figures affiliated with the Islamic movement, in addition to his interest in sociology; As he focused in many of his writings on depicting the social reality in the shadow of the religious establishment that was his time, and he wrote a large number of books specializing in the study of Islamic history in addition to his works in sociology. This is on the one hand, and on the other hand, his lectures, especially those he delivered in the Husseiniya Al-Irshad, were printed in notebooks and recorded on tapes until the total …
The Border Crisis Between Oman And The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia Over The Buraimi Oasis And The British Position On It 1952-1955, Raed Abbas Fadel Shamry
The Border Crisis Between Oman And The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia Over The Buraimi Oasis And The British Position On It 1952-1955, Raed Abbas Fadel Shamry
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The concept of borders was not clearly defined between Oman and Saudi Arabia. This is because they did not know any administrative boundaries to demarcate regions and states, nor did these countries have established lines of demarcation between them. Rather, tribes moved from one place to another without any obstacles. Moreover, the concept of ownership was limited, especially in coastal cities and oases. We attribute this to the fact that the princes of the Gulf states and the Arabian Peninsula did not attach any significant importance to the issue of borders. There was no fixed principle for determining autonomy. Sometimes, …

Geographical Comparison Of Female Labor Forces In Iraq, Egypt And Saudi Arabia, Azhar Jabir Murad
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The research problem is a contemporary problem, represented by the suffering of working women, which has recently increased in proportion with the increasing proportion of working women in line with the demands of the modern era. Work has become a top priority for women to fulfill many of life's emerging demands. This practice was not widespread in the past, as a woman's primary occupation was caring for her children and household affairs—a natural function. Working outside the home, on the other hand, was only an urgent necessity, to meet the family's growing needs or in the absence of a breadwinner. …

Conditions Of The Working Class In Iran During The Reign Of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi 1941-1979 Ad, Naeem Jassim Mohammed
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
During the reign of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (1941-1979), the Iranian working class experienced harsh conditions and greatly struggled to achieve their legitimate rights, similar to the rights of workers in other countries. The Iranian Communist Tudeh Party stood with the working class in demanding their rights during and after World War II, and the working class in Iran participated in the most prominent political events witnessed by the country, such as the oil nationalization movement led by Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh (1951-1953). The working class was then destined to witness a revival in the 1970s, especially after the rise in …

Future Visions For Developing The Reality Of The Scout And Guide Movement, Mahmoud Dawood Al-Rubaie, Fadhel Abdul Faydi Al-Taie
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The Scout and Guide movement has been a part of the lives of young people, both ancient and modern, in most countries, nations, and peoples, despite their diverse cultures. It plays a significant role in their lives, both directly and indirectly. Therefore, everyone, especially youth leaders, bears enormous responsibilities that go beyond organizing Scout camps and associated activities and fulfilling young people's hobbies and desires. Rather, it involves embracing them, developing their energy, and building them properly, based on purposeful and efficient programs and plans. Scout and Guide leaders must be able to persuade young people to change their personalities …
The Ingenious Narrator Of Poe's Dupin Mysteries, Timothy Paul Wirkus
The Ingenious Narrator Of Poe's Dupin Mysteries, Timothy Paul Wirkus
Theses and Dissertations
Scholarship on Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin stories consistently focuses on the stories' influence on the genre of detective fiction. One of the foundational genre elements pioneered by Poe in these tales is the sidekick/narrator. Throughout detective fiction, the less-intelligent sidekick has become a standard fixture, a convenient trope in foregrounding the brilliant machinations of the detective's mind. The attention the literature gives to the narrator of the Dupin tales is almost universally in terms of the sidekick/narrator figure as a trope of detective fiction; in this way, it seems that Dupin's companion has come to be read in terms of …

The public school system in America has slowly phased music education out of most students curriculum. Cutting these programs help schools manage their fiscal budget and also keep students in the classroom longer in hopes that the extra time will produce better test scores. In recent years studies have shown that cutting music programs might not be in the best interest of students, or schools working for better test scores. One such study published in Social Science Quarterly, suggests that “students who participate in music are positively associated with academic achievement, especially during the high school years.” If this study …

Tracing Taizé: Rebuilding Global Solidarity Through Religious Pilgrimage, Dayna Tapp
Senior Theses
This study explores religious pilgrimage, specifically within the Christian tradition, and the individual experience of pilgrims as they travel to a small ecumenical village in Taizé, France. Taizé is a pilgrimage site drawing many young adults from around the world to spend a week or more at the village, participating in a variety of bible study groups, volunteer work, and personal reflection. Because many young adults are experiencing a transitional phase into adulthood with crucial decisions about academics and future life plans, Taizé provides a liminal space of validation and spiritual understanding. Through interviews with pilgrims on-site and ethnographic fieldwork …

Commencement Addresses
Alumna and research professor of International Development, Community and Environment at Clark University Cynthia Enloe '60 spoke to the graduates about connections; their connections to the past, those present, and to those they may not know. "A connection should probably make you feel a little uneasy. Because if you make a connection it means you're beginning to take responsibility for that person's life. It means that that person is somehow affecting your life, but you're also affecting their life."
