A Country Of Immigration? Situating German Multiculturalism In The New Europe, Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager Jun 2011

A Country Of Immigration? Situating German Multiculturalism In The New Europe, Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses a complex cultural and social phenomenon: German multiculturalism in the framework of the European Union in the century of globalization and global migration. I use selected cinematographic works by Fatih Akin, currently the most celebrated German and European filmmaker, as cultural texts. This project illuminates cultural controversies, political complexities, and the discriminatory nature of German multiculturalism. Specifically, I show how and why the German society eagerly accepts and successfully integrates Italian immigrants, yet, culturally marginalizes and socially excludes the Turks. My work illuminates how complex historical and political processes of the past, guided by the principle of …

From The Body Of The Faithful To The Invention Of Religion: The Long Reformation For International Relations, Sarah Bania-Dobyns Jun 2011

From The Body Of The Faithful To The Invention Of Religion: The Long Reformation For International Relations, Sarah Bania-Dobyns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses how traditions associated with canon law of late medieval international society granted authority to myriad polities in fifteenth and sixteenth century questions of societal governance. In international relations, the late medieval period has rarely been given much attention; scholars have argued that the late medieval period is too "local" of an event to be considered within broader historical discussions of international societies and systems. This, however, is highly ironic considering that late medieval international society saw itself in universalist terms. It is precisely because late medieval international society was founded upon universalism, but organized on the basis …

Beyond This Point Are Monsters, Roxanne M. Carter Jun 2011

Beyond This Point Are Monsters, Roxanne M. Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Beyond This Point Are Monsters is a creative work which establishes a fluid, unstable space between the mediated image and the written word. It addresses issues of repetition and difference in the TV melodrama and the inscribed surface of the house in the Gothic novel, performing the romantic and sensational tropes of the Gothic formula in order to subvert them. The project investigates and inhabits the soap opera Dark Shadows which aired daily on ABC from 1966 to 1971, and examines the manner in which the show defies its own genre conventions. I chose Dark Shadows as the foundational source …

Carousel Of Consumerism: Austrian Filmmaker Barbara Albert’S Critique Of Contemporary Society In Böse Zellen, Beret Norman Jun 2011

Carousel Of Consumerism: Austrian Filmmaker Barbara Albert’S Critique Of Contemporary Society In Böse Zellen, Beret Norman

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

All of Austrian filmmaker Barbara Albert’s three feature films, Nordrand (Northern Skirts) (1999), Böse Zellen (Free Radicals) (2003) and Fallen (Falling) (2006), portray human relationships in flux and depict people reacting to changes in the world. These films critique society obliquely as they present damaged figures in their attempts to shape a meaningful existence. Albert always manages to keep the viewer floating on the side of this latter point—that of looking for a meaningful existence, even though the social setting often appears so meaningless and commercialized. In Böse Zellen the building and opening of a new shopping mall play a …

« C’Est La Terre Qui Nous Choisit... ». Réflexion Sur Les Normes Endogènes Des Littératures Du Pacifique, Patrick Dutard Jun 2011

« C’Est La Terre Qui Nous Choisit... ». Réflexion Sur Les Normes Endogènes Des Littératures Du Pacifique, Patrick Dutard

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

How did the clash between the standards in Pacific cultures and the norms of the colonizers occur between 1774 and today? What standards are followed in 2010 in the literary works of this great space? Here is a reflection that provides a quick picture of this confrontation. In a nutshell, here’s what we feel is the essence of this major issue, the survival and rebirth of a literature pertaining to the heritage of our planet, so little understood and marginalized.

Globefish, Sturgeon And Trout: Duke Cosimo I De' Medici, Bachiacca And The Consuming Culture Of Fish, Felicia M. Else Jun 2011

Globefish, Sturgeon And Trout: Duke Cosimo I De' Medici, Bachiacca And The Consuming Culture Of Fish, Felicia M. Else

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

Poetry And The Multiple Drafts Model: The Functional Similarity Of Cole Swensen's Verse And Human Consciousness, Connor Ryan Kreimeyer Fisher Jun 2011

Poetry And The Multiple Drafts Model: The Functional Similarity Of Cole Swensen's Verse And Human Consciousness, Connor Ryan Kreimeyer Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project compares the operational methods of three of Cole Swensen's books of poetry (Such Rich Hour, Try, and Goest) with ways in which the human mind and consciousness function. I use Daniel Dennett's Multiple Drafts Model of consciousness, as described in Consciousness Explained, alongside concepts presented in several other philosophical works (from both analytic and continental traditions), to demonstrate that significant similarities exist between the operations of poetry and consciousness in general, and that these operational similarities are especially noticeable in Swensen's work. This thesis examines several operational modes that are present within the …

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua Jun 2011

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua

Ethnic Studies

Latin American Indigenous Peoples (LAIP) are a marginalized segment in Latin America. They inhabit a sub-America and are forced to migrate due to socio-political struggle and cultural coercion. LAIP experience a transnational and transborder migration that reflects the quality of cultural hybridity and of regional, ethnic, and cultural crossings. The purpose of this study is to research LAIP ways of reclaiming and reproducing cultural practices that elicit Indigenous awareness, knowledge, and ethnic identification in a transnational setting. The study examines through interviews and photographs transborder experiences and the lives of the participants. As a result, the project reveals that LAIP …

Le Français De Tunisie. Normes Ou Formes Endogènes, Foued Laroussi Jun 2011

Le Français De Tunisie. Normes Ou Formes Endogènes, Foued Laroussi

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The article deals with some lexical and morphosyntactic aspects of Tunisian French based on examples taken from literary works and the press. These are for the most part lexemes borrowed from Tunisian Arabic, some of which are accepted as standard French. the debate on Tunisian French takes place in a multilingual sociolinguistic context in which users adopt a variety of sometimes conflicting positions. While some attempt to legitimize an endogenous norm, others cling to the exogenous norm which they take as a reference especially in an educational context.
