Fictionalia As Modal Artifacts, Jeffrey C. Goodman Jan 2010

Fictionalia As Modal Artifacts, Jeffrey C. Goodman

Faculty Scholarship

There is much controversy surrounding the nature of the relation between fictional individuals and possible individuals.  Some have argued that no fictional individual is a possible individual; others have argued that (some) fictional individuals just are (merely) possible individuals.  In this paper, I offer further grounds for believing the theory of fictional individuals defended by Amie Thomasson, viz., Artifactualism, by arguing that her view best allows one to make sense of this puzzling relation.  More specifically, when we realize that the view allows for an identification of merely possible individuals with fictional individuals, we see that the utility, and hence …

Multiple Intelligences In The Gospel Classroom, John Hilton Iii Jan 2010

Multiple Intelligences In The Gospel Classroom, John Hilton Iii

Faculty Publications

In a worldwide training broadcast, Elder W. Rolfe Kerr taught, “We cannot expect our students to learn all that we hope they will learn by just hearing a concept or principle one time. Multiple presentations, utilizing various approaches, often appealing to multiple senses, increase the likelihood of our students actually learning and internalizing the concepts we teach.”

“The Tunisia Paradox: Italy’S Strategic Aims, French Imperial Rule, And Migration In The Mediterranean Basin.” California Italian Studies 1, “Italy In The Mediterranean” (2010): 1-20., Mark I. Choate

Faculty Publications

This article explores contradictions in Italy’s relationship with the Mediterranean basin, setting Tunisia as a focal point. Tunisia was a paradoxical case at the intersection of Italy’s foreign policy: it was a former Roman imperial colony with a strategic location, but it was also a large and vibrant Italian emigrant settlement, like the Italian “colonies” of Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo, New York, and San Francisco. This situation caused much confusion in debates over how Italy should develop its international influence. Faced with a choice of priorities, the Italians of Tunisia called for Italy to concentrate on establishing territorial colonies in …

Missionaries, Moral Advocacy, And The Transformation Of Police Court Procedure In London, 1876-1930, Sascha Auerbach Jan 2010

Missionaries, Moral Advocacy, And The Transformation Of Police Court Procedure In London, 1876-1930, Sascha Auerbach

Studio for Law and Culture

This paper examines how informal courtroom negotiations transformed formal trial procedures, significantly expanded the social roles of local courts, and helped shape discourses of class, gender, race, and nationalism in British courtrooms. Specifically, it explores the origins, development, and impact of London’s first unofficial probation officers, the Police Court Missionaries. The introduction of these missionaries, who were paid agents of the Church of England Temperance Society (CETS), into the courts of the metropolis represented a watershed in the relationship between the state, private philanthropy, and working-class men and women. From the evolving dialogue between missionaries, working-class defendants, and magistrates emerged …

"Petitions Without Number": Women’S Petitions And The Early Nineteenth-Century Origins Of Marriage-Based Entitlements, Kristin Collins Jan 2010

"Petitions Without Number": Women’S Petitions And The Early Nineteenth-Century Origins Of Marriage-Based Entitlements, Kristin Collins

Studio for Law and Culture

Between 1792 and 1858, Congress enacted approximately seventy-six public law statutes granting cash subsidies to large classes of military widows. War widows’ pensions were not wholly unknown in Anglo-American law before this time, but the widows’ pension system of the early nineteenth century was distinctive in both scope and kind: Congress rejected the class-based approach that had characterized war widows’ pensions of the eighteenth century by pensioning widows of rank-and-file soldiers, not just widows of officers, and by extending pensions to widows of veterans. This significant equalization and expansion of widows’ pensions resulted in the creation of the first broad-scale …

The Ethics Of Nostalgia In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things, Hope Jennings Jan 2010

The Ethics Of Nostalgia In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things, Hope Jennings

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

We can read Roy's novel as an articulation of the necessity of questioning the nation's representation of authority, bringing to light that which exists on its borders and margins, and ultimately demonstrating how this "plurivocality" disrupts the unity or hegemony of national discourse in order to reveal how a nation is perhaps located in its counter-narratives, its own irreducible differences (Bhabha, 301). More specifically, according to the terms of Benedict Anderson's ubiquitously cited phrase, Roy is engaged in examining how India, like any nation, exists as an "imagined community"; or rather, The God of Small Things explores how we imagine …
