Thinking Otherwise: Theology, Inculturation And Climate Change, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2010

Thinking Otherwise: Theology, Inculturation And Climate Change, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Eco-Theology and Creation Spirituality are examples of major attempts to dialogue with science. In the process, they have journeyed through diversity. In contrast, the essay will seek to take another route to think otherwise upon ecological responsibility. First, it comments on the danger of being forgetful of the Christian narrative. This is not to deny the impact of climate change or global warming, but to argue that fear and facts should not necessarily be the starting point for addressing our present concern. The essay then brings into conversation the idea of ‘the quest’ for Jesus the Christ. The quest consists …

The Black Death And The Future Of Medicine, Sarah Frances Vanneste Jan 2010

The Black Death And The Future Of Medicine, Sarah Frances Vanneste

Wayne State University Theses

ABSTRACT

THE BLACK DEATH AND THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE

by

SARAH FRANCES VANNESTE

May 2010

Advisor: Dr. Hans Hummer

Major: History

Degree: Master of Arts

The Black Death was a catastrophic event in Europe's history. It had both devastating immediate effects and deep long-term consequences. Historians, however, have not agreed on the extent of the Black Death's effects on the development of medicine and medical practices in Europe. Some historians credit it with revealing the general failure of medieval medicine and directly sparking a reassessment and reformation of medical practices, while other historians minimize its effects on medicine or omit …

Predrag Matvejević’S Mediterranean Breviary: Nostalgia For An “Ex-World” Or Breviary For A New Community?, Anna Botta

Italian Studies: Faculty Publications

In recent years, the declining importance of the nation-state and an increase in globalization have encouraged scholars to move towards the borderless world of seas and oceans, giving special attention to their diasporic movements of people and goods. Lately, this “new thalassology” has witnessed an outburst of Mediterranean studies. Yet the resurgence of the Mediterranean in the postmodern, anti-nationalistic arena must be critically assessed. The risk in such studies is a reinforcing of old stereotypes, what the anthropologist Michael Herzfeld calls “Mediterraneism.” The present article highlights the work of two scholars and one writer who alert us to the manifold …

Pas De Deux: La Mutua Lectura De Octavio Paz Y Robert Motherwell, Aurora Camacho De Schmidt Jan 2010

Pas De Deux: La Mutua Lectura De Octavio Paz Y Robert Motherwell, Aurora Camacho De Schmidt

Review Of Venice, Cita Excelentissima: Selections From The Renaissance Diaries Of Marin Sanudo. E, Brian Maxson

ETSU Faculty Works

This fascinating new book, Venice, Cita Excelentissima, contains a series of translated excerpts from the diaries of the Venetian patrician Marin Sanudo (1466-1536). Sanudo wrote his vast diaries between 1496 and 1533. As early as Sanudo's own lifetime, historians used the richness and variety of these diaries as an unparalleled evidentiary source for early modern Venice. The depth of the diaries derives from Sanudo's personal access to govern ment records and, perhaps even more, his attention to detail and the wide range of topics that he deemed worthy of record. The importance of the diaries prompted a group of Italian …

Dreadful Sorry: Spots Of Passion And The Memory Of Being Human In Kaufman’S “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” And Pope’S ‘Eloisa To Abelard’, June-Ann Greeley

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Memory is a journey of infinite possibility, a continuous passage through time and sense that offers each person an opportunity not merely to recall and to reflect on former occasions and previous experiences, but to reconsider and to reexamine the past as a guide, as instruction, for healthy individuation. Memory, then, can be understood to be the aggregate of experiential and emotional recollection that frames the essential ground in forming and realizing individual identity. Both Alexander Pope in his poem “Eloisa to Abelard” and Michel Gondry/Charlie Kaufman in the film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” offer portraits of individuals …

The Bachelor Narrator Motif In The Sketches Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Carol L. Anderson Jan 2010

The Bachelor Narrator Motif In The Sketches Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Carol L. Anderson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines the bachelor narrator motif in seven of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s sketches, published between 1831 and 1843. Hawthorne’s narrators are artists, alienated from society in general, and from women in particular. Moreover, they are modeled upon the figure of the European flaneur, the idle ‘man about town’ who believes he can read the character of the stranger in the crowd. In these first person narrations, Hawthorne explores the problems of subjectivity (involving self-concept, including the split between the conscious and the unconscious, and the gap between the mind and the material world) and the problem of knowledge (involving the …

Gods As Parental Figures In Euripides’ Alcestis, Hippolytus, Iphigenia In Aulis And Tauris, Valbone Dushaj

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The relationship between father and child seems to be a tumultuous one in the Greek tragedies, particularly in Euripidean tragedy. Father and child frequently do not have a loving and unrestrained relationship, but rather a distant, stoic bond void of communication. In Alcestis (438 B.C.), Hippolytus (428 B.C.), Iphigenia in Aulis (406 B.C.), and Tauris (414-410 B.C.), the children, Admetus, Hippolytus, and Iphigenia, deal with disregard, mistreatment, and abandonment by their fathers, Pheres, Theseus, and Agamemnon. Doomed to die, these children often hold their fathers accountable, indirectly or directly, as murderers in their passing. Even as the unwritten law of …

The Rhetorical Construction Of Reader-Writer Identities In Contemporary Fiction Reviews, Katherine G. Giannisis

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The New York Times Book Review is a prestigious, well-known, and widely-read publication. Each Sunday, countless readers turn to the reviews published in the Times for critiques of recently released contemporary fiction. The reviews are written by individuals of experience: novelists, short-story writers, nonfiction writers, professors of Literature, and editors of literary publications. However, in recent years, many websites have begun to publish online book reviews written by everyday readers. Goodreads.com, created in December 2006, is a social networking site devoted solely to reviewing and discussing books. My project examines the identity of the reviewer who writes for The New …

Gendered Spaces In James Joyce’S Dubliners, Cynthia J. Hacker Jan 2010

Gendered Spaces In James Joyce’S Dubliners, Cynthia J. Hacker

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis paper, entitled Gendered Spaces in James Joyce’s Dubliners, will explore Joyce’s use of the special environment, both public and private. Joyce designed the built spaces in his stories to reflect the way space was gendered in his time. Each space, whether it was the home, the street, the pub, or a church, was indicative of a pattern of power relationships between men and women. Within these gendered spaces, power relationships were constructed, individual consciousness formed, and national identity debated.

In Joyce’s stories, women occupy the space of the home in a way that suggests it is their expected …

Lost In A Lie : Examining The Language Of Storytelling, Lying And Untruths In Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot, Demons And The Brothers Karamazov, Anastasia Shamin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis will focus on the liars in three of Dostoevsky’s major novels: The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot and Demons. It will consist of three chapters devoted to one character (liar) from each novel. I will focus on several definitions of lying by examining the concepts of untruth and misfire, which will help to differentiate the characteristics of each character’s motivations, as well as the consequences that their words have on the discourse within the novels. This project’s primary focus will be in exploring the rhetoric of lying by studying the style of each liar’s verbal delivery. The degrees and …

Re-Centering Students’ Attitudes About Writing: A Qualitative Study Of The Effects Of A High School Writing Center, Katherine Palacio

Department of Writing and Communication Theses

While attitudes are difficult to assess, a qualitative research study can produce results to give insight into how a student feels a writing center has improved his or her confidence and attitude towards writing. This study reviews the minimal discussion of students‟ attitudes towards writing in past and current writing center research and builds upon the conversation by following three students‟ journeys in the writing center and discussing whether their experiences with the tutors has improved their attitudes about writing.

It uses four major Vatican documents and several foundational Augustinian ideas to elaborate principles useful for the guidance of Merrimack’s academic community and the direction of its campus culture. The article concludes with Merrimack’s “Statement of Augustinian Values for Higher Education” as an expression of its distinctive mission in American higher education.

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, Delys Ostlund Jan 2010

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, Delys Ostlund

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women’s equality, cross dressing, homoerotic desire—all the makings of a twenty-firstcentury comedy—were the focus of a seventeenth century play by Lope de Vega, La prueba de los ingenios (1612?-1613?). In the last two decades, interest in this work has increased considerably. Evidence of the rising popularity of the play is an English-language adaptation by Caridad Svich, which she titled The Labyrinth of Desire. The professional production at Miracle Theatre is the focus of this study. After a brief discussion of the homoerotic theme of the work and general issues of the translation and/or adaptation of the Comedia, I will then …

Teotihuacan Imperialism In The Yautepec Valley, Morelos, Lisa Montiel Jan 2010

Teotihuacan Imperialism In The Yautepec Valley, Morelos, Lisa Montiel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the study of ancient empires, models are needed to identify the material correlates of different types of interactions that bind imperial systems. This study focuses on the investigation of political domination in provincial areas. The Teotihuacan Empire dominated the political and economic systems within and around the Basin of Mexico from AD 200-650. There are many studies on the core polity of Teotihuacan and its surrounding area, yet intensive archaeological studies of Teotihuacan's periphery are needed to understand the organizational complexity of the empire. The Yautepec Valley in Morelos is located in an area that was likely on the …

Soldiers Of Conscience : Conscription And Conscientious Objection In The United States And Britain During World War I, Timothy Mark La Goy Jan 2010

Soldiers Of Conscience : Conscription And Conscientious Objection In The United States And Britain During World War I, Timothy Mark La Goy

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Conscience and the freedom to exercise conscience have long been cherished civil liberties in western democracies. However, during World War I, traditional concepts of conscience and conscientious objection to military service were challenged by the demands of conscription and militarism in the United States and Britain. This dissertation examines the definition, context, and exercise of conscience by conscientious objectors (COs) during the war. This study finds that conscience existed in a dynamic state. COs were compelled by changing circumstances to reevaluate and restate their objections as they responded to changing circumstances in army camps, guardhouses, and prisons.

Recovering Brande : Freewriting And Sustainable (Procedural) Expression, Richard Bower Jan 2010

Recovering Brande : Freewriting And Sustainable (Procedural) Expression, Richard Bower

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Dorothea Brande is rarely known in rhetoric and composition yet continues to hold popular influence over writers attracted to Cartesian beliefs. The aim of this project is to recover Brande's contributions in order to rethink composition's trajectories. Chiefly, Dorothea Brande's legacy has been in creative writing through Becoming a Writer. In this bestseller, she establishes a program for putting the Cartesian divide to work. "Writing with the unconscious mind in the ascent," as Brande explains about what Ken Macrorie and Peter Elbow later call freewriting, harnesses the bifurcated consciousness of writers and begins a journey of unification.

Promiscuous Pioneers Of Morality : The Code Of Ethics Of A Secret Service Functionary In Communist Poland As Set By Law And Practice, 1944-1989, Leszek Murat Jan 2010

Promiscuous Pioneers Of Morality : The Code Of Ethics Of A Secret Service Functionary In Communist Poland As Set By Law And Practice, 1944-1989, Leszek Murat

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In recent years the historical literature on the communist system has grown to significant proportions, yet it has not made a comprehensive attempt to answer the empirical question of how successful communist regimes were in inculcating their moral principles into societies. But the empirical conflict between ethics and realityb is crucial to understanding why communism eventually failed. My dissertation makes the first attempt to juxtapose the communist code of ethics, the morality it preached, and the ideal it championed, with ethical dilemmas, moral transgressions, and legal violations of the "purest of the pure" - communist security functionaries.
